The 13 Cardiff City players facing uncertain futures this summer including big names and fans' favourites

As we come to the end of any season, there will be Bluebirds players who will have one eye on the summer window and where their futures lie and with the Cardiff City Committee looking for more cut backs, many high wage players might be on the list.

It is as yet unknown what the future holds for Cardiff City striker Robert Glatzel, who is currently on loan at Mainz.

As we approach the end of the season, one eye always turns to the looming transfer window.

There appears to be a disparity between Mick McCarthy's version of Tomlin's fitness and his own. Judging by his social media posts, he feels he is ready for a return to first-team action.

McCarthy, though, insists he is not at the level required for his high-octane, pressing football.

Some players have been pushed to the periphery under McCarthy, others have simply been unlucky with injury or illness, and there is no doubt we face an intriguing summer transfer window.

With a number of players facing uncertain futures beyond the summer, we take a look at those at risk of heading for the exit door.

Gavin Whyte, Isaac Vassell, Lee Tomlin, Junior Hoilett, Robert Glatzel, Joe Bennett, Jonny Williams, Ciaron Brown, Mark Harris, Tom Sang, Alex Smithies, Sheyi Ojo and Jordi Osei-Tutu.

' Gavin Whyte '

A genuine divider of fans, Gavin Whyte has been the cause of much conversation since he arrived from Oxford United back in the summer of 2019.

A mainstay under Neil Warnock, the Northern Ireland international was cast aside when Neil Harris took the reins as the coaching staff tasked him with producing more in the final third.

He never really got a look-in, though, and one of Harris' final calls as City boss was to sanction a loan move out to Hull City, where he has made something of an impression.

Whether he has a place in Mick McCarthy's Cardiff City this summer and beyond is a different matter, though.

On the face of it, Whyte looks like he would be a perfect fit as a back-up right wing back, however with Perry Ng having looked impressive since his arrival and Tom Sang announcing himself with a standout performance against Swansea City at the weekend, quite where Whyte fits is a bit of a head scratcher.

It is difficult to see him filling the role which Josh Murphy and Sheyi Ojo have in recent months, as that second striker, but he certainly has his fair share of fans in the Welsh capital.

Whether McCarthy can fit him into the jigsaw or not is an intriguing prospect, but there is a big decision to be made when he returns upon the season's end.

Isaac Vassell

Even seeing his name draws a sigh. What a rotten two years the striker has had.

He has not kicked a ball competitively since August 2019 and looks no closer to a first-team return now than he did back then, truth be told.

Mick McCarthy has not seen any of Vassell in a City shirt, nor did Neil Harris in his entire tenure, save 20 minutes for the under-23s when he suffered another setback before hobbling off.

It was a huge risk to sign him, given his injury record, and he started so brightly with that injury-time winner against Luton Town all that time ago.

But here we are, all this time later, and he has just three appearances to his name for the Welsh capital city club.

With one year remaining on his contract, it is best for all parties if he can move on to pastures new this summer.

Lee Tomlin

Who would have thought that Lee Tomlin would be included in this list? As much as it may pain City fans to think it, Tomlin's long-term future is something of a question mark.

There appears to be a disparity between Mick McCarthy's version of Tomlin's fitness and his own. Judging by his social media posts, he feels he is ready for a return to first-team action.

McCarthy, though, insists he is not at the level required for his high-octane, pressing football.

It is too early to say whether Tomlin will enjoy a relationship with McCarthy more akin to Neil Harris or Neil Warnock, but the early signs don't fill you with too much confidence.

His inclusion in match-day squads in these final eight games of the season will be telling with regards to where his future lies next season, you feel.

Tomlin and Jonny Williams with their continual injuries both are risks in that sense.

Junior Hoilett

A real season of two halves for Junior Hoilett, adored and trusted by Neil Harris, but yet to really have a sniff under Mick McCarthy.

The Canada winger was fairly ineffective in the first half of the season, but Harris stuck by him. He has largely had a watching brief over the last two months, though.

Like Bamba, his contract is also up at the end of the season. While it is understood negotiations had begun back in January, we are yet to hear any further on the player's situation, as is typical when there is a change of management.

Again, he has fallen victim to McCarthy's change of system.

It is unlikely he could fill the "striker" role which Josh Murphy and Sheyi Ojo do, but it also doesn't seem likely he would slot in at wing-back, either.

At just 31, he still has some good footballing years ahead of him and if another club offers him regular football, be that in this country or elsewhere, it might make sense for all parties for him to take up their offer.

Junior Hoilett has been on the periphery under Mick McCarthy and his contract is up this summer

Robert Glatzel

Some Cardiff City fans were up in arms when Robert Glatzel sealed a deadline-day loan move to Mainz, some because of how highly they rate the player, others simply because of the lack of a suitable replacement.

At present, there is a weighty burden on Kieffer Moore. He has been tremendous for the Bluebirds all season and is no doubt the club's first-choice striker.

Glatzel netted his second Bundesliga goal at the weekend; he now has two in seven for his new club.

He quite clearly has a talent for scoring goals, but whether his style of play fits Mick McCarthy's brand of football is definitely up for debate.

One thing Cardiff are lacking at the minute is someone to rotate with Kieffer Moore, for the Welshman has been flogged all season, whacked from pillar to post game after game in physical encounters.

The honest truth is, Glatzel cannot play that type of hold-up football Moore plays, nor can he inject the pace or showcase the flair of Josh Murphy or Sheyi Ojo.

He sits in between the two and it's a funny place for him to be. It is probably the toughest call of the lot this summer.

Do Cardiff stick with him, persist and hope he adapts to become one of the two, crow-barring himself into McCarthy's plans in the process? Or do they hope he impresses at Mainz, sell up and buy a more Kieffer Moore-esque back-up option?

That is a huge dilemma. What they would give for a Callum Paterson at the minute...

Joe Bennett

It was so cruel that Joe Bennett sustained such a horrible injury against Derby County at the beginning of March.

Bennett underwent surgery for his ACL tear last Friday and is already working his way back to recovery, but the early prognosis is between six and nine months for his return.

His contract expires this summer, too, leaving him in a precarious position.

But the defender was playing somewhere near his best football before that injury, flourishing in the more advanced wing-back role under McCarthy.

He seemed to have really got his mojo back and looked a threat at the top end of the pitch while also looking far more rigid defensively with the cushion of an extra centre-back in behind him.

He, too, had entered early talks over a new deal back in January, but talk of that has also dried up of late.

Given the years of stellar service the 31-year-old has given the club, and he still has a lot more to give, too, on balance he probably deserves a new contract.

He is also the perfect mentor to usher through young Joel Bagan, the left-back for whom the club hold very high hopes.

Jonny Williams

Jonny Williams' Cardiff City career has been a curious one thus far. He has barely kicked a ball despite having been at the club since the end of January.

He had an early setback after getting whacked in the knee in training and has struggled to break into the team ahead of Harry Wilson and Leandro Bacuna in that No.10 role.

He has played just 19 minutes of first-team football under Mick McCarthy, but there is no doubting that the Welshman has a lot of talent to offer.

Should Cardiff remain in the Championship next season, it is highly improbable they will be able to retain the services of Harry Wilson. With Lee Tomlin's fitness a concern, it would be short-sighted not to have someone with the creativity of Williams in the squad.

Wilson was a luxury this term, so Williams seems a more logical and sustainable fit moving forward and it would not be a surprise to see him kept on, vying for that creative playmaker role with a fully-fit Tomlin, on the premise he stays, too.

Given Williams' injury woes, though, both he and Tomlin are risks in that sense.

Jonny Williams has played just 19 minutes of football for Cardiff since joining in January.

Mark Harris

Mark Harris was another who looked as though he had done enough to earn a new deal back in January and, in truth, that should still be the case.

The Bluebirds academy product has enjoyed a decent breakthrough season and will no doubt hope to kick on if afforded the chance.

The position in which he plays, though, has been clouded by the shift to make wingers second strikers and as a result he has seen his game time greatly reduced.

He will need to produce more with the game time he is afforded, which may seem a little harsh given how little he has played under McCarthy, but that is the nature of the beast.

With Max Watters scoring goals for fun for the under-23s and breathing down his neck to take that back-up striker role, it will be interesting to see how Harris responds.

But it seems likely he will be around next season.

Ciaron Brown

Mick McCarthy recalled the Northern Ireland international from his loan spell up at Livingston on the recommendation of a scout, who happened to be one of his best friends.

It was difficult to see where he would fit in, with three centre backs nailed on and two left wing-backs already in situ.

But while injuries have been unkind to Curtis Nelson, Joe Bennett and Joel Bagan, it has provided a sliding-doors moment for Ciaron Brown.

Cardiff have an option to trigger an extension in his contract, which is currently set to expire at the end of the campaign.

After a big performance from the defender against Swansea City last weekend, he has endeared himself to Bluebirds supporters and probably gone some way to convincing the powers that be that he has deserved an extension.

With Cardiff employing three centre backs at the minute, having a fourth on standby is a must.

Tom Sang

At the start of the season, Tom Sang couldn't even get a string of games for League Two Cheltenham while on loan.

Insiders at the club always talked up the player's talent, though, even when his loan spell wasn't working out, and there was a hope he would have a part to play at the back end of the season.

Now, following some very solid performances over the last few games, including that stellar display against the Swans, he has grown to become a promising prospect and a player who fans are excited about.

He has filled in for Perry Ng at right wing-back and has looked increasingly comfortable in a City shirt.

He has all the ingredients to become a decent wing-back and while his career looked to be heading elsewhere this summer, his first-class displays have perhaps changed the course just a little.

His contract expires at the end of the season, too, but it would be no surprise if he put pen to paper on a new deal.

Alex Smithies

There is a big decision to be made surrounding Alex Smithies this summer.

Dillon Phillips has done to Smithies what he did to Neil Etheridge last season, ousting a top goalkeeper who is now consigned to the touchline.

Phillips has been excellent and Smithies, through no fault of his own, has become second choice.

Smithies is one of the highest earners at the club and at the minute he looks a real luxury on the bench. Whether Cardiff can afford that in the Championship or whether they think it wise to spend their pennies elsewhere will definitely come into their thinking.

He is a top operator, though, and it would be tremendous for the Bluebirds to have two goalkeepers of such calibre in the squad.

The question of whether the player would be happy playing second fiddle, or even if the club can afford to keep him on in such a capacity, is something which needs to be addressed in the next window.

Sheyi Ojo

Now we move on to players who are not Cardiff City's own players.

Sheyi Ojo joined on loan from Liverpool back in the summer and, on the whole, has done well. He has gone through peaks and troughs, as wingers generally do, but has added a good attacking dimension to this side and a different kind of threat owing to being left-footed.

The Liverpool youngster has been farmed out on loan more times than he would care to remember and it is thought he now wants a place to settle and build his career.

Cardiff, one would think, should be in pole position for first refusal. This has been Ojo's best loan spell so far and he has been given more than a fair crack at the whip.

He has adapted well to playing up front but can also apply himself just as capably on the wing, should McCarthy opt for a change of tack at any point. He has pace to burn and has shown he has an eye for a goal as well as an assist.

Whether Liverpool's price tag for him would be too high is another question altogether, it would probably depend on sales, or at least saving on wages, of some of the above players.

Many supporters would like to see him back permanently, though, that's for sure.

Jordi Osei-Tutu

Perhaps the most frustrating of the lot, Jordi Osei-Tutu's season has been blighted by a horrible hamstring injury.

He looked so bright at the start of the season, and many were urging the club to make the deal permanent in the summer, before injury plagued his campaign.

Calls for that appear to have quietened in recent weeks, though, and it is no coincidence that has been the case since Tom Sang's emergence on that right-hand side.

Arsenal would likely demand a decent price for the 22-year-old prospect and there is no guarantee he would force himself ahead of Perry Ng anyway.

Cardiff fans would have no qualms with Tom Sang vying for that right-back spot alongside Ng and that will likely have a large bearing on whether City decide to enquire about signing the Gunners defender permanently.

A Bluebirds academy graduate versus an Arsenal young gun, it remains to be seen in which direction the Bluebirds go.

2 Cardiff City players who will surely be eyeing a summer exit the club

By Phil Spencer

Thursday 25 March 2021

Cardiff City could be gearing up for a busy summer.

The Bluebirds are enjoying a decent season and are still in the mix to secure a place in the play-off spots come the end of the season.

Of course there’s still plenty of work for Mick McCarthy’s side to do if they’re to reach the top six, meaning that the chances are they’ll be playing in the Championship again next term.

If that is the case there’s no doubt that Cardiff will be in the mix next term.

The Welsh side are building an impressive side under McCarthy but in order to bring new players in, one or two may have to move on.

Here are two players could may well be looking for a move away this summer.

Lee Tomlin

Things just don’t seem to be working out for the midfielder at the moment.

Tomlin has really struggled with injuries of late and as a result has missed much of the season so far after undergoing surgery on a groin injury in the Autumn.

Despite being back in action the playmaker has found it tough to break into the first team fold again and so there’s every chance that he may look for a fresh start this summer as he looks to reignite his career.

' Jonny Williams '

He only joined the club in January this year but things just haven’t worked out.

Williams has been limited to just two cameo appearances for the Bluebirds this term which has suggested that he’s not seen as being part of Mick McCarthy’s plans.

At 27 years of age the player needs to find somewhere where he can thrive and perhaps a summer move away is the best chance for him to do that.
