Cardiff boss Mick McCarthy hails ‘Brilliant’ Aden Flint who Owls dumped in January

Football 24/7

Cardiff City manager Mick McCarthy says Aden Flint has been brilliant following his return from a loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday.

Flint fell out of favour with former Cardiff manager Neil Harris and Harris and the Cardiff City board loaned Flint out on a season long loan.

Former Wednesday manager Garry Monk took advantage of his situation, signing the giant central defender on loan for the 2020-21 campaign after missing out on Michael Hector.

But the 31-year-old, however, made just four Championship starts for the Owls.

A hamstring injury in the defeat at Rotherham United back in October ruled Flint out for three months, with Wednesday later pulling the plug on his loan deal in January.

Flint has since regained a regular place at playoff chasers Cardiff, scoring the winner in their victory over rivals Swansea City prompting McCarthy to sing his praises.

MICK McCARTHY:

“He has been great, hasn’t he? I always admired him and thought he was a top defender when he got his moves. I was kind of surprised that he had been out on loan. But I had a word with him, the first week I was in and he has been brilliant. I am amazed at his resilience, how he has come back, having been three months off with a hamstring. He has been brilliant,” McCarthy explained.

Flint has since made 14 appearances for the Bluebirds under McCarthy since his return to Wales.

Cardiff’s victory over Swansea leaves them on the cusp of the Championship to six.

Sheffield Wednesday, meanwhile, have struggled to maintain a regular defensive partner for Tom Lees as Dominic Iorfa, Julian Borner and Joost van Aken have battled injuries.

Osaze Urhoghide has since broken through for the Owls, with the youngster impressing.

Darren Moore’s side have given themselves a fighting chance of survival after the 2-1 win at Yorkshire rivals Barnsley – a victory which was no doubt well-received by Cardiff.

Not sure about that. I went there about four years ago when they were 6th and we were 7th with two games left and we were 4 points behind them so had to beat them to take it into the last game. Only about 1,000 of us there. Got stuffed 3-0 and Slade was a dead man walking.

Things were different then. We were a club on the slide.

Ive watched city at virtually every ground in the country including sheff weds. But I'm pretty sure like dirty Leeds the tickets were around the £40 mark the last few times so it was a no from me. My cut off point is around £30.

Been about £37 the last few times I think.

The worst was our first season in the Premier League. Went to about 14 away games that season. There was no cap on away prices so certain away games were very expensive. I remember going to Chelsea and especially thinking they were excessively expensive.

It's different now because they have a £30 cap on away ticket prices in that league.

Cant see how we were on the slide. We were probably in a stronger position than we are now, I do remember it being very expensive though

Under Slade we had sold a lot of players, football was dire. There was a general malaise around the club. We didn’t think we had any chance of getting to the playoffs.

It seems a lot different now.

we needed to win both games and hope SW drew or lost their last game ,so your correct about it being a better situ.. but didnt feel that way to me at the time tbh and i never really considered play offs although looking back we have had worse seasons since .. that whole season seemed flat and strange...

Fans were fed up. We had been in poor form for a long time and there was no momentum. Crowds are always poor in those circumstances.

CARDIFF CITY BOSS ADMITS ‘SURPRISE’ AT 2020 DECISION TO SEND 31-Y/O TO SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY

Mick McCarthy:
"I'm really surprised that Aden Flint was sent out on loan."

By Stephen Williams

Wednesday 25th March 2021

As quoted by the Sheffield Star, Cardiff City manager Mick McCarthy has admitted he is “surprised” centre-back Aden Flint was sent on loan to Sheffield Wednesday last October.

"I'm really surprised that Aden Flint was sent out on loan, thankfully I have Flint back now, as I have always rated him."

Neil Harris and the Cardiff City board sent Aden Flint out on a season long loan, many say it was more about reducing wages.

The 31-year-old centre-back has been a mainstay in Cardiff City’s starting 11 since returning from his short-lived loan spell with Sheffield Wednesday in the January transfer window.

Flint has played all 90 minutes of every Championship game for Cardiff since January 27th. In that time, the Bluebirds have lost just once, winning eight and drawing five.

Now, Cardiff boss Mick McCarthy has discussed the club’s decision to send Flint out on loan for the first half of the season.

As quoted by the Sheffield Star, McCarthy has said he was left “surprised” by the decision, adding that he is “really pleased” to have seen him impress in recent months. Here’s what he had to say:

“I’m really pleased for Aden."

“I’ve always really rated him as a centre-back and I was surprised to hear he had gone out of our club on loan. He’s been fantastic for me.”

Flint struggled to make an impact at Hillsborough, with a hamstring injury keeping him out of action for almost his entire stay with the club. For Sheffield Wednesday, the experienced cente-back played in just four Championship games, with his last appearance coming in a 3-0 loss to Rotherham United.

Now, Flint will be looking to continue in his strong vein of form as McCarthy looks to fire Cardiff City back to the Premier League. The Bluebirds sit in 8th place as it stands, four points away from the top six.
