'We’re a bit raw at the moment' - Swansea City's Steve Cooper left gutted by Cardiff City defeat but makes telling admission

The Swansea boss has pinpointed what disappointed him most after his side's derby day defeat at the hands of Cardiff City

By Ian Mitchelmore

Steve Cooper bemoaned his side's inability to defend a set-piece as Aden Flint's first-half header earned Cardiff City a 1-0 win over Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium.

The defender headed beyond Freddie Woodman following a long throw-in after just eight minutes.

After surviving waves of Swansea attacks in the second half, the Bluebirds held on to claim all three points which meant Cooper's side missed the chance to secure a league double in the fixture for the first ever time.

And Cooper says his defence should have dealt far better with the threat of Will Vaulks' long throw-in that led to what proved to be the winning goal.

STEVE COOPER:

“There’s great disappointment because it’s a massive game for everybody and we have come out on the wrong end of it," said the head coach.

“The way it’s happened as well, at the moment it’s difficult to get our head around it.

“We have conceded off a long throw which we knew was coming.

“We have played some brilliant football, we have created lots of chances, we have dominated every single stat you want to dominate apart from the most important one and that’s the score. It’s a tough one to take."

And on the long throw-ins, Cooper said: “You aim to deal with them. Theirs is particularly long. Every set-piece they can put in the box, they do. That’s a test. That’s their way of playing football.

“But we have created enough chances to get at least a draw. We’re a bit raw at the moment.”

Defeat leaves Swansea six points adrift of second placed Watford - although they boast a game in hand over the Hornets.

And while Swansea suffered back-to-back defeat for the first time this season, Cooper admits his troops remain in a strong position to achieve success this term.

"The bigger picture is we're in a really positive league position, and one that will be envied by everybody below us," he said.

"Third in the league, I don't think many people would have put us here at this stage at the start of the season.

"It's a tough one to get over, I won't lie and I won't hide away from that, but we've got to make sure that we come back stronger from it with nine games to go.

"We just wanted to get over the line today, get three points and take a deep breath, have a small rest, a bit of work on the training pitch.

"We've not been able to train normally for weeks, and get ready to go for that run-in. We'll use the time wisely."

Swansea return to action against Birmingham City at St Andrew's on Friday, April 2.

Envy their position? They’ve squandered an almost certain automatic promotion spot and will almost certainly get dicked in the playoffs based on their recent form against top placed sides. I’d rather be us than them.

Really arrogant press conference. Bit sad really.
