The Swansea City vs Cardiff City exact score predicted - The writers deliver their South Wales derby verdicts

Swansea City and Cardiff City face off at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday in what promises to be a cagey installment of the South Wales derby

By Mathew Davies

Friday 19th March 2021

The hosts have the cushion of knowing they already have a win in the bag this season, having beaten the Bluebirds 2-0 at Cardiff City Stadium earlier on in the campaign.

There is plenty riding on the match, with both teams harbouring hopes of promotion come May. Swansea are eyeing the second automatic spot behind Norwich City, while Mick McCarthy's side are still in with an outside chance of the play-offs.

Here is how the writers think the match will play out...

Tom Coleman - sports writer

I was a little surprised how little Cardiff offered last time out, considering they came into that game on a terrific run of four straight wins, but these sorts of matches often pay little attention to the form book.

That's probably just as well this time around really, given that these two teams have recently been about as exciting as a nursing home at nap time.

Cardiff have drawn a blank in their last two games and have seemingly been cursed by Mick McCarthy's new contract/Manager of the Month award (pick one), while Swansea's inexplicable but highly admirable knack of picking up laughably ill-deserved points was smashed to pieces at the hands of Bournemouth on Tuesday night.

Jamal Lowe, the derby hero last time out, hasn't scored in 14 games now, and is one of several stars that looks in dire need of a rest, although in fairness, Cardiff have much the same problem. Even McCarthy admits Kieffer Moore is in desperate need of putting his feet up for a bit. Cardiff have several players capable of causing damage, but if Moore doesn't play well, Cardiff don't tend to win. It'll take a monumental shift if he's to break down a defence that sits just behind the top two as the best in the Championship - a backline that could yet be boosted by the return of Marc Guehi.

Similarly, Andre Ayew, who for me is the best in the Championship will likely need to make sure he rediscover his best form if Steve Cooper's men are to become the first team to do the double in this fixture.

Cagey derby days are so very often right behind death and taxes in the list of life's great certainties, and with so much riding on this game, it's difficult to see that changing.

A win for either side would prove hugely damaging for the other's promotion ambitions, meaning this will, from a mental point of view, likely be considered a 'must-not-lose' for both of them. Unfortunately, this game is on the wrong side of the international break for me, and I can't look past a horrifically ugly goalless stalemate, which probably means you should lump all your money on a nine-goal thriller.

Prediction: 0-0

Mat Davies - head of football

The game between these two sides earlier in the season was incredibly one-sided. On Saturday, however, I expect it to be far closer.

Swansea out-fought, out-ran and outclassed the Bluebirds at Cardiff City Stadium but you would be absolutely astonished if they turn in that sort of performance again at the Liberty.

Cardiff are much improved under McCarthy and will offer a threat against Swansea's backline. It will be interesting to see how Cooper's men respond to the 3-0 hammering they were handed by Bournemouth in midweek. They were uncharacteristically sloppy at the back on the south coast, and if that were to be repeated in SA1, Kieffer Moore and Co could cause them problems, especially at set-pieces.

As ever these games are ridiculously hard to call, but I refuse to believe that Swansea will be as bad as they were against the Cherries.

Cooper really understood the importance of the derby earlier in the season and drilling his message into his players certainly paid dividends.

As such, I'm going for a narrow home win. I'm not sure it will be that pretty though.

Prediction: 1-0

Ian Mitchelmore - Swansea City correspondent

Neither side has been playing particularly good stuff coming into the match, however, results have been largely impressive for both Swansea and Cardiff.

I'd be stunned if the Bluebirds were anywhere near as meek as they were in the capital before Christmas given the players they have at their disposal and how they've improved under Mick McCarthy.

However, while Swansea were pumped 3-0 by a classy Bournemouth side last time out, there were some encouraging signs in terms of their play against the Cherries.

Rotation will be key for the hosts, with Jake Bidwell, Jay Fulton and Ben Cabango among those fresh and ready for action if needed while Marc Guehi may well be available too.

If Swansea improve defensively after a slight wobble in that capacity of late, they'll win. Cardiff have been incredibly efficient under the new regime, although their style appears to have slowly taken its toll physically in recent games.

As ever, it's remarkably difficult to get a feel for how the game will pan out, but Steve Cooper's side have a knack of getting it right in this game. Home win. Just.

Prediction: 1-0

Glen Williams - Cardiff City correspondent

The last few derbies appear to have followed a pattern. Going into it, Cardiff appear to have a little bit of momentum and positivity, while Swansea, despite the terrific season they are enjoying, look to be a little flatter than they have been in recent times.

That usually precedes a convincing Swansea win, mind you, but there is just something a little different about this Cardiff side under Mick McCarthy.

Swansea carved Cardiff open in the Welsh capital back in December, but with two deeper-lying midfielders and three centre backs, I would expect the Bluebirds to be far more robust than they have been in previous derbies.

For me, it's the battle of the wing backs. They are so important for Swansea and, for Cardiff, they have gained increasing prominence under McCarthy.

Connor Roberts against Perry Ng is the battle of the evening, for me, and whoever comes out on top of that will go a long way to their team's success.

But, as much as I hate sitting on the fence, there is just too much for each team to lose in this match and I fear that will play out in the setup and endeavour of both teams.

Cardiff have one goal in their last three games, Swansea have two, neither team are firing on all cylinders. A cagey draw, for me.

Prediction : 0-0

So no one is predicting a win for us. That's good news.

The fact is we have been awful on our games against the Jacks for a while.

Even when Warnock was in charge, who we know brings passion, we didn't play well against them.

We haven't beat them since 2013 when we won 1-0 at home against them in the Premier League. We've lost three of the four since then, with the other being a 0-0 draw.

We haven't won at Swansea for ten years.

But I do think we'll offer more this time. I think the team will be up for it.

That said, I'm going for a 1-1 draw but a good performance.

3-0 to the Blooooobirds, I've had a couple of ales mind.

Re: The Swansea City vs Cardiff City exact score predicted -

I think the first goal will decide this game. An early goal for us might see them leave themselves open, like they did against Bournemouth. Or if they score first they will just keep possession, sit back and mop up balls lumped upfield to Moore.

I think they need to win if they want autos, might play into hands. We need to win if we stand any real chance of playoffs. Must not lose game for us because of the double! Pressue on this game for both teams for different reasons.

We are due a good performance against this lot! Heart says 1-0 City, head says 1-0 scum. Id settle for 0-0 now

fifa 13 ? not sure if you have me confused with another poster, the last topic i was active on was the celtic mick mccarthy link i believe.

so wait, let me get this straight, when it comes to playing against passing teams, we seem to struggle. we never show up at the south wales derby, and because i was being honest, now my account is in question. really. if you guys want me to lie, then fine. we'll win 4-0. but honestly, i cant see us beating them.

i think out of them 4, Bournemouth are the only team i would picture us struggling against if i am honest because the quality they have aswell as the style of play. i know we beat them however.

but in regards to today, bennett, and looks like NG could be missing, i know nelson has been absent, is he back yet ?, moore and co look exhausted, i just think, we'll have to play a high press today to get something out of the game, and i think fatigue will play a big part in stopping us from doing that. with the ball, we do struggle to keep possesion, ( i know, i know having high possession doesnt mean you win) but i just think against a team that thrives on keeping the ball, they will ping it about to keep us chasing them, to tire us out until cracks appear. just stating my opinion on how i think it will go.

not sure how much you have watched them lately but theyve looked ropey of late and are not the pass it to death team they once were... infact in the last 8 games they only dominated poss once when they got hammered by bristol..they did have 51% at Bournemouth.... other than that theyve been out possessed by the other 6 including Boro...
having said that i thought we looked much better with NG and Bennett pushing on and would be far more confident if they were playing if both are out he possibly needs to look at setting up differently?
