About Swansea City

Swansea City Association Football Club is a Welsh professional football club based in Swansea, Wales that plays in the Championship, the second tier of English football. Swansea have played their home matches at the Liberty Stadium since 2005, having previously played at the Vetch Field since the club was founded.

The club was founded in 1912 as Swansea Town and entered into the Southern League, winning the Welsh Cup in their debut season. They were admitted into the Football League in 1920 and won the Third Division South title in 1924–25. They again won the Third Division South title in 1948–49, having been relegated two years previously. They fell into the Fourth Division after relegations in 1965 and 1967. The club changed their name to Swansea City in 1969 to reflect Swansea's new status as a city. They were promoted at the end of the 1969–70 season, though were relegated again in 1975.

The club won three promotions in four seasons to reach the First Division in 1981. It was during the following season they came close to winning the league title, but a decline then set in near the season's end, before they finished sixth, still a club record. It was from here the club suffered a relegation the season after, returning to the Fourth Division by 1986 and then narrowly avoiding relegation to the Conference in 2003. The Swansea City Supporters Society Ltd owns 20% of the club, with their involvement hailed by Supporters Direct as "the most high profile example of the involvement of a supporters' trust in the direct running of a club". The club's subsequent climb from the fourth division of English football to the top division is chronicled in the 2014 film, Jack to a King – The Swansea Story.

In 2011, Swansea were promoted to the Premier League. On 24 February 2013, Swansea beat Bradford City 5–0 to win the 2012–13 Football League Cup (the competition's highest ever winning margin for the final), winning the first major trophy in the club's history and qualifying for the 2013–14 UEFA Europa League, in which they reached the round of 32 but lost over two legs to Napoli. The club was relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2017–18 season.

The Club owe us a performance and a result against that lot. Last 4 meeting's against them we haven't even scored a goal.

Murphy and Wilson should be fresh and I expect them to come in for Ojo and Bacuna. The rest of the team pretty much picks itself, only question mark is who partners Vaulks in midfield?

Ralls and Pack have both been poor in the last few weeks, many might disagree but I would give Williams the nod. We need energy for a high press and them lot are not the most physical but I suspect Pack will get the nod.

Both teams desperate for a win I'm going 0-2 City Moore and Wilson. We're due a big performance from Harry and I believe this is the game for him to shine.

Paul Tierney will take charge of our match at Swansea City on Saturday.

He is listed as a FIFA referee.

Tierney has refereed 21 matches this season, although none of these have been in the Championship.

He has been in charge of one EFL Cup match and one FA Cup match, as well as 19 Premier League games.

He has shown 77 yellow cards and three red cards. Tierney has given five penalties this season - all five of the penalties he has awarded have been in the Premier League.

He has shown more yellow cards than any other Premier League referee this season.

He has refereed several high profile games in the Premier League this season, including:

Manchester City v Tottenham Hotspur

Liverpool v Manchester United

Chelsea v Tottenham Hotspur

Chelsea v Liverpool

He was in charge of our play-off semi final second leg at Fulham last season, when we won 2-1 but lost on aggregate. He showed eight yellow cards in that match, four for each team.

Cardiff didn’t lay a glove on Swansea last time out at the Cardiff City stadium and couldn’t get anywhere near them under the management of Neil Harris.

It is a pattern that has developed in recent years and feels like it has become an inferiority complex of sorts. They need to shed that sharpish if they have any chance of avenging a run of bad results and performances against their fiercest rivals.

Swansea suffered a heavy defeat at Bournemouth on Tuesday, losing ground on second place in the process.

From what I’ve seen and heard in recent weeks, they’ve had it coming, as results have been better than performances for a while now. That tends to catch up with you eventually, especially in the Championship, where all your luck often vanishes in one fell swoop.

Swansea will be keen to avoid the lottery of the play-offs for a second consecutive season and are in the mix for automatic promotion with Brentford, their conquerors at the same stage last season. Watford now occupy second and look formidable, with arguably the best squad in the division, so Swansea face a tough task in merely keeping up.

With Swansea likely keen to avoid a bad result becoming a crisis and Cardiff in fear of losing twice to Swansea in the same season for the first time, it feels like a cautious draw may well be on the cards and that we should probably expect a safety first South Wales derby.

Swansea can certainly expect to meet a far more resilient, well-drilled Cardiff side than the one they faced towards the end of Neil Warnock’s tenure last season and the increasingly muddled outfit they somehow became under Neil Harris.

McCarthy has found a shape that fits Cardiff’s constituent parts. Defence aside, there is plenty of strength in depth and players can now slot in seamlessly without disrupting the whole. They play far further up the pitch, which is a necessity against Swansea, if you don’t want them to dictate the whole contest.

The difference under Mick McCarthy you will see a team giving 110% and fighting to win every ball and playing for their manager, team and club, Swansea will face a different match this time, I can promise you that.

I agree with putting Williams in midfield but if not please do not put Ralls there, I’d rather it be Pack if not Williams.
Joe Bennett/Joel Bagan, Curtis Nelson and Tutu will be a big loss. I hope Murphy and Wilson come back in.

Swansea are unbeaten in their last four league games against Cardiff (W3 D1), only enjoying a longer run once, going seven unbeaten between 1997 and 2009.

Cardiff have lost their last two away league games against Swansea, last losing three in a row back in April 1987.

Swansea have only lost one of their last 15 league games at Liberty Stadium, winning on 10 occasions in this run (D4).

The Swans have kept more home clean sheets than any other Championship team this season (11).

Cardiff are unbeaten in their last seven away league games (W4 D3), they last had a longer such run in February 2013 (9).

Mick McCarthy is looking to become the first Cardiff City manager to win his first away league match against Swansea City since Russell Osman in 1996-97.

Pundit's prediction

"We've seen the last couple of Swansea games on Sky and you can't argue that Bournemouth deserved to win in midweek, even though Swansea were in the game," David Prutton told Sky Sports.

"The Swans may be looking a little tired, and Cardiff could be running out of a little steam under Mick McCarthy. Although it is only three without a win.

"This one is as nicely balanced as you can wish for, and I fancy an entertaining draw."

David Prutton's prediction: Swansea City 2-2 Cardiff City
