' Dealing with a baptism of fire '

By Glen Williams

Mick McCarthy stuck to his word on Saturday and named Brown at left wing-back for the clash with the Hornets.

It was the Northern Ireland international's full league debut for the Bluebirds and what a baptism of fire it was.

He was tasked with keeping Sarr, a £40m winger, and Kiko Femenia, one of the best right-backs in the division who was schooled in Barcelona's famed La Masia system, quiet all afternoon and it has to be said Brown, who signed from non-league Wealdstone, did a stand-up job.

Some will point to the fact that his inclusion will blunt City's attacking edge just a little and they are perhaps right to say that.

Brown, like Flint, has his limitations with the ball at his feet, he tends to just lump it up to Kieffer Moore or over the top for Josh Murphy to run on to, but that will come with time and confidence.

Positionally he did very well and kept the Hornets' vaunted right-hand side relatively quiet all afternoon.

It is obvious he is a centre-back by trade and that is probably where his long-term future lies. But funnily enough it is when he was moved into centre-back, when Curtis Nelson went off, when he made his biggest mistake, bundling Sarr over in the box for what looked like a certain penalty with minutes to go. But the claims were waved away.

Quite why Nelson was brought off is unclear as yet, but if it is an injury then Brown will likely shift inside to that left centre-back position which will suit him far better, with one of Perry Ng or Tom Sang likely to add that attacking edge in a makeshift left-back role.

But an assured full debut for the youngster and he will no doubt be largely happy with his display.

I’m not sure who wrote this but did they watch the game ?

I thought His distribution was excellent so to say he had similar distribution to Flint was nonsense.

He is a centre back, I agree. But his passing was excellent.

Roger I was worried about Brown as I thought Championship level might be to good for him, but Brown had an excellent game :thumbright: :bluebird:

It was Glen Williams who wrote the piece.

Annis I remember him playing a game for us I cannot remember when  but he played in the right back position, and looking back then I thought he did well. Perhaps someone can remeber that

Agree he gave a cracking pass in the build up to our goal and his passes were measured to find Murphy

After his spell in Scotland, I was glad he was given a chance here tbh, and his game will get better and better in my eyes, had a great full debut, shame we lost.
