" The 'kiss of death' "

It was always going to happen, wasn't it? As soon as McCarthy won the Championship Manager of the Month award, Cardiff were always going to lose.

And so it proved to be.

McCarthy has done a stellar job since taking the reins in the Welsh capital and he was recognised with the gong ahead of the clash with the Hornets.

Some more pessimistic fans joked before the game that was the end of the run, some even went as far as to say it was the end of the play-off push all together.

And a light-hearted McCarthy was also in on the joke after the match.

"If you're going to get beat I'd prefer to get beat after 11 games than after the first two or three," McCarthy said. "The lads have been fabulous.

"I should have refused the manager of the month award. I should have given it back to them. It's the kiss of death, isn't it?

"Now it's ended with a 94th-minute free-kick is a right kick in the what's its.

"I'd like to apologise to all the fans for winning the manager of the month award!"

Of three of our previous managers who won at various times MOTM, Dave Jones, Malky, and Neil Warnock, how many times did we actually lose immediately after winning this accolade?
