Thursday 11th March 2021

Did you ever with Linda Martin (song)?

Since I left school, I have made two records and I can’t write and I can’t sing!

McCarthy

This weekend, this is going to be very tough?

MICK McCARTHY:

Yeah, we have been watching them this morning.

We have been playing their opponents, they have been playing who are going to be our opponents. Some really good players, back from the Premier League.

They are in good form and a really good position.

It’ll be one of our toughest games, this.

McCarthy

MICK McCARTHY:

Weekend off?

It was a really intense schedule.

It was good for them all to get a break and they are all feeling fresher and sharper.

McCarthy

Anyone back?

"Jordi is back. He has come back from Arsenal. He has trained with us, that’s been good.

Everyone said he was a good player and that’s quite clear!

We are not planning on him playing yet though, he has got two 23s games first.

Perry Ng is back, he trained today."

McCarthy

MICK McCARTHY:

"Lee Tomlin Tomlin not fully fit yet"

No, not yet. He is getting there. But the intensity of our games is different to those 23 games.

He is getting there.

He needs to be training fully with us, so not yet.

"He has got to earn his position to get in there.

He is not there yet in terms of his fitness, not by any stretch of imagination. He had 60 minutes in the under-23s and was taken off to protect him."

The intensity of those games are nowhere near."

Jonny Williams needed a game, good for Max Watters to get his goals. Alex Smithies as well. Keeping them sharp for when we need them.

McCarthy

A big boost, Ng?

Yes he has, a good player.

But Tom Sang, a really good debut the other night.

Perry has been great, a good player and delighted to have him back.

MICK McCARTHY:

Nice to welcome back players from a position of strength, when things are going well?

It’s much easier for the players coming back into it when the team is doing well.

Unfortunately, for the players who have been out, it’s much harder.

It’s a much happier place when you are winning games.

MICK McCARTHY:

New contract, what have you made of Cardiff and being here?

I am delighted we have the opportunity to stay here. They have trusted us with managing the club.

In lockdown, it’s hard to make anything of anywhere. Someone told me to get an apartment down in the bay because of the bars and restaurants, but they are all shut!

I am loving it at the training ground. I have been really welcomed by staff.

But it’s a shame I can’t see anything of it.

MICK McCARTHY:

Been resilient on the road…

"Yes, we had to be at Huddersfield on Friday. They have had bits in the season where they have done well.

I keep going back to the schedule, but I’ve pretty much kept the same squad and same players.

They have got that mentality of not getting beat.

We didn’t play well on Friday night, but just don’t get beat. If you have that mentality and keep picking points up…

And at home! It’s a great attribute to have."

MICK McCARTHY:

Flamboyant at home, free-scoring?

"Yeah. For all that resilience. I was speaking to Josh Murphy today and I always say to the attacking players, when they get an opportunity it’s on the back of people like Sean Morrison, Flint, Nels, Vaulksy, Rallsy, Marlon Pack sticking their foot in. Goalkeepers saving penalties. They are taking their chances when they come along."

Come through Watford pretty good test?

If we could beat Watford here, second in the table, playing well and the ability to grind it out and have good flair players, that puts us in a great position. It would give us a whole lot more confidence too.

MICK McCARTHY:

Watford’s set-up, does it cause problems with your setup, so much width?

I will find out on Saturday.

We played Bournemouth, Preston, lots of teams have matched us up, I don’t see Watford doing it.

It can cause a problem against five defenders when the full-back is doubling up.

But if they are doing that then how about how they deal with us?

This is just another challenge. They are a good team, we will see. We will have a plan.

MICK McCARTHY WATCHED

CARDIFF CITY U23’S

On Tuesday:

City won 4nil, but they did play a very young Watford side.

City fielded 6 first team players.

Big Mick McCarthy & his coaches watched :thumbright: :bluebird:

Max Watters, Junior Hoilett , Mark Harris and Alex Smithies shone for the U23’S :bluebird: :bluebird:

Jonny Williams looked ok as well :bluebird:

Smithies saved a penalty :bluebird:

68th min Lee Tomlin was replaced by Ryan Kavanagh, Tomlin still along way to go before fully match fitness.

Scorers :bluebird:
Max Watters 2
Mark Harris
Jonny Williams

Lee Tomlin was replaced by Ryan Kavanagh in the 68th min, Tomlin is still yet to play a full 90 mins for the U23's since he has returned from injury and its over 5months since Tomlin played for the first team.

MICK McCARTHY:

Playing Watford, they have to worry about you, does it help seeing Troy Deeney unavailable?

I don’t believe anything I hear or read until I get the team sheet before kick-off! I have got no interest in what anyone says about their team.

I have had 1,000 games and I’ve had so many times people trying to pull your leg.

I’ve even asked players who know the opposition and they pull the wool over their eyes.

Joel Bagan, operation needed?

He is seeing the specialist this afternoon. He has had a scan and he is seeing a specialist to decide whether it is operated on or whether it is rehab.

MICK McCARTHY:

Max Watters in the under-23s, verdict on him?

He is much improved, certainly on the stuff me and TC spoke to him about, in terms of where he will get his goals.

I know he had a few before, but where he will get his goals is in that second six-yard box. He scored four in the last two games.

Between himself and Mark Harris, who also scored but doesn’t get a mention, the both of them have played better together. A better understanding of the position.

That’s TC who does that work with them on a morning prior to training.

You can certainly see an improvement.

Where do you see Tomlin fitting in?

"He has got to earn his position to get in there.

He is not there yet in terms of his fitness, not by any stretch of imagination. He had 60 minutes in the under-23s and was taken off to protect him.

The intensity of those games are nowhere near."

Jonny Williams would have struggled with the intensity, he hadn’t played since December.

If Tomlin gets himself fully fit we know he is a good player."

McCarthy

"Lee Tomlin Tomlin not fully fit yet"

No, not yet. He is getting there. But the intensity of our games is different to those 23 games.

He is getting there.

He needs to be training fully with us, so not yet.

Jonny Williams needed a game, good for Max Watters to get his goals. Alex Smithies as well. Keeping them sharp for when we need them.

Josh Murphy revelled in attacking role?

BIG MICK:

Josh has done well since he has gone into that role. He is a real threat, that’s for sure.

He is still learning it, but he has bought into everything we have asked and he is working exceptionally hard.

I still think there is more to come from Josh.

What have the managers said?

Cardiff City manager Mick McCarthy:

"We have been playing their opponents, they have been playing who are going to be our opponents, if you know what I mean.

"They are really solid, they have got some really good players, back from the Premier League.

"They are in good form and a really good position. It’s going to be one of our toughest games, this.

"If we could beat Watford here, second in the table, playing well and they have got the ability to grind it out those one-nil games, they don't give too much away, Watford. And they have good flair players.

"But if we can win this game, if we do win this game, well that puts us in a great position. It would give us a whole lot more confidence beating second in the league, too.

"But there are a lot of ifs in there!"

Watford manager Xisco Munoz:

“We know we need to go there like gladiators, play very hard and give our best, with power, intensity and ambition.

“We know what we need, it’s not easy the numbers they have. It’s excellent work from their coach, we have big respect for him.

"It’s important everybody knows this next game is an amazing challenge for us because we want to break this situation for them.

“Our team now has more time on the ball, creates more chances to score. We know we need to stay alert and pay attention with set pieces and we need to give them more problems.

"We have our style and our players and we’re hungry every game to take the points.”
