What is the Europa Conference League?

I get really get my head around the Europa Conference League.

I must have been living under a rock as I didn't know anything about it until this morning

My understanding is that it's a competition that's pretty much on the 3rd rung of European football -

Champions League
Europa League
Europa Conference League

Anyone able to explain qualifying criteria in simple terms?

Wont affect us but sounds like it will be good for the Welsh league teams to get into Europe?

Looks like there will be more teams countries who don't tend to have representation in the Champions League and Europa League.


EFL Cup winners in England will qualify but I have no idea what happens if whoever wins that trophy finishes in a Champions League or Europa League place.

what happens if the EFL cup winners also qualify for a higher competition is the same as happens now... eg.if Man City won the treble the clubs who finish 6th and 7th in the league would normally take the cup places in the Europa lge ....only from nxt season the club taking the place of the FA cup winners will go into the europa lge...and the 7th placed club will take the EFL place qualifying for this new competition....
the champions league clubs going into this new competition are the first 20 eliminated ..

dont see much interest in this unless its your club taking part ?

That makes sense.

About the only thing about this competition that does make sense.

think the idea is that clubs from the lower ranked associations get a chance of progressing a bit further...

tbh prior to UEFA increasing the amount of counties in the finals from 16 to 24 and us qualifying for France id always thought a 2nd tier Euros would be a decent idea for smaller countries to have a taste of tournament football...

It's about money and inclusiveness who makes more money for UEFA Barry town or arsenal? So more inclusive it is for top teams more money it makes? As we know eufa and fifa are money driven and will do anything to increase revenue streams anyway could be voted on in 2wks apparently.

Reading that in 2024 they're also going to expand the Champions League to 36 teams from 32.

It seems like that news, as well as the new competition, will end all talk of a European Super League - which is something obviously UEFA, Premier League, La Liga, Serie A and Bundesliga all want to avoid.

UEFA's proposal is to increase the number of group-stage participants from 32 to 36, with each team guaranteed 10 rather than six games,
teams based on their historic record in Europe..........
England, Spain, Italy and Germany currently have four guaranteed slots in the group stage. But leading teams who don't make the top four of their leagues (7th place "arsenal " could still qualify, with three of the additional group-stage slots lined up for such teams based on their historic record in Europe.
The fourth additional spot could go to France, which currently only has two guaranteed group-stage slots while a third team has to go through qualifying.

The current format of eight groups would also be transformed, with UEFA instead using a variation of the so-called "Swiss system."

All 36 teams will be placed into a single league table, with opponents determined based on pre-season ranking positions.

as regards what has been actually decided yes it does..
im aware that there are proposals for an expanded CL , but that has nothing to do with this new Europa Conference...

Any new competition is a sop in an attempt to keep smaller countries sweet whilst at the same time an enlarged Champions League will be available for more of the elite.

this conference has no direct bearing on our cups... what ever is decided as being the future of the champions league could well do...just how much the proposed extra games effect the league cup only time will tell....

Well expansion of champions league will have effect on league cup its been eluded to already by efl..... this new competition needs dates to play in and we've seen this season clubs
had problems fulfilling fixtures? I know it doesnt start until 2022 so we shall see if it as effect on both cups..... I read the article and no idea how they think all the games can fit in to an already congested calendar but I'm sure they'll succeed....

Champions league , should be just that . Champions of each country !

But its all about the money .

I dont suppose a QF between TNS and Cork , would be much of a money spinner .
