Cardiff City man tight-lipped over possible permanent move to Hull City

Hull Live

Sunday 7th March 2021

Cardiff City loanee Gavin Whyte was the hero for Hull City yesterday with two goals against Bristol Rovers.

Hull look on course to being in the Championship next season and are keen to sign Whyte.

Ex Cardiff City manager Neil Harris was instrumental in arranging Whytes loan move to the Tigers.

Whyte is still on contract for the Welsh Club.

The Tigers beat Joey Barton’s side to go back to the top of the League One table.

Whyte, who is 25 years old, joined the East Yorkshire outfit on a loan deal until the end of the season in January and has chipped in with three goals in his nine appearances so far.

The winger gives Hull more options and depth on the wing and is looking to help them get back to the Championship.

It could be the case that Grant McCann’s side may try and lure him to the KCOM Stadium on a permanent basis this summer, especially if they do get promoted.

Whyte was asked whether he plans to make the move to Hull for good, as per BBC Radio Humberside Sport. He said:

GAVIN WHYTE:

“To be fair, I haven’t really thought about (a move) permanently. I want to continue doing what I’m doing now and concentrate on the football side of things, to be honest.”

“I haven’t really thought too far ahead I just want to concentrate on the now.”

Whyte moved to the Football League to join Oxford United from Crusaders in 2018 and spent one year with the U’s in League One before earning a switch to Cardiff.

He has since made 37 appearances for the Bluebirds but was allowed to leave this winter to get more game time.

Hull City chief’s gamble pays off thanks to Gavin Whyte

GAVIN WHYTE repaid Hull City chief Grant McCann’s faith with a match-winning performance against Bristol Rovers.

Sunday, 7th March 2021,

The on-loan Cardiff City winger bagged a goal in each half to fire the Tigers back to the top of League One with 12 games of the season remaining.

In doing so, the 25-year-old demonstrated the kind of ability that saw him become a regular in a promotion-chasing Championship side last term. It was a big improvement on his previous City outing, where he struggled to influence the contest and was substituted as the East Yorkshiremen beat Rochdale 2-0 in midweek.

With Josh Magennis fit again after injury, McCann had a decision to make in the final third for Saturday’s visit of struggling Rovers, but opted to rest Keane Lewis-Potter and stick with Whyte.

Ultimately, that decision proved to be a good one.

GRANT McCANN:

“You’ve got to remember that Gavin has missed three or four weeks with an injury so, like any professional footballer will tell you, it takes a bit of time to get back up to where you can be,” said McCann.

“Gavin was part of a Cardiff City team last year that got into the top six in the Championship. He’s a top player, an international player.

“Today was more about freshening up Keane [Lewis-Potter] and giving him a breather. Gavin has been training really well, his performance against Rochdale, there was nothing wrong with it.

“He was probably a little bit defensive with his positioning at times. It’s about getting him into better positions so that he can affect the game and I think that his two goals proved that he can do that, so I’m really pleased.”

Rovers left-back Cian Harries was culpable for Whyte’s 32nd-minute opener after trying to see out the ball for a goal-kick on the right touchline.

Mallik Wilks refused to give up the cause and craftily gained possession before crossing for his team-mate to volley into the bottom corner.

Whyte’s second came on the hour-mark after George Honeyman selflessly teed up the Northen Ireland international to stab home from just outside the six-yard box.

Encouraged by his loan star’s performance, McCann insisted there is still more to come from the versatile attacker.

“There is a lot more in him, for sure,” he added.

“Maybe he has been used to playing off the right a lot in his career, but we do know that he can play off the left. He’s probably a wee bit more direct when he plays off the right. He’ll take people on more.

“Off the left, he finds little pockets he’s clever on the ball, he wants to come in and link with Magennis and Wilks, so it’s a nice string to his bow that he can play in a few positions.”

Personally I still don't think he's good enough for the Championship.

Doing well in League One but it's completely different playing in the league above.

There are obviously exceptions, with players like Jamie Vardy, Ivan Toney and Perry Ng successfully making the step up from lower leagues.

Hopefully he comes back and proves me wrong.

I think he could be an important player for us next season. Could do a job in a front 3 or as a wingback.

Chris,

Your right there mate the club have some big decisions to make soon and it involves money! Bamba, Vassel and Bennett. Personally I don’t think the club can carry them whatever division we are in.

If we keep them all that’s 3 less players to bring in! Oh just remembered you can add Tomlin into that scenario. Going to be interesting to see which way they go.

It's good to see Gavin Whyte enjoying his spell up at Hull City.
He divides opinion at Cardiff, but I like him :thumbright:

I like Gavin Whyte as a squad player. I do think he could do a job for us in the Championship, possibly as a wing back.

The Premiership - well.....lets get into the top 6 first eh?

He isn't good enough as a winger for the championship but may well be worth a try as a wingback. Certainly in his early days under Warnock he seemed to spend a hell of a lot of time on defensive duty. I think he would make a godd wingback. He is a grafter who gets up and down the pitch and gets the odd goal here and there. If he can fit in there he would be a good squad player.

Bamba and bennet might be more difficult decisions to make but vessel and Tomlin still have a year on their contracts and I can't see either agreeing to settle them. Particularly Vessel who is currently injured so wouldnt get signed by anyone, plus he's getting free medical care through the club. I know there's a bit of hate campaign towards tomlin at the moment on here but next season, if we don't go up, we are going to have to bring a few players in just to get back to level we are at this season. If we don't see him this season, I think he'll have a part time play next season.

I quite like Whyte too and it’s not a bad shout that someone said he’d be good as a wingback.

I know Vassel and Tomlin have a year to go but doesn’t stop them leaving. Vassel could be paid up and released and Tomlin will go out on loan. Difficult I know with other 2 but if we kept all 4 that’s over 300k a month wages just for that 4.

Only got to look at Richards, no clubs came in for him after he was released and they won’t with any player who has constant injury problems.
