The Cardiff City boss admits his side have a worrying habit of giving penalties away

"That shouldn't happen. It was a bit of a panic stations and they get the penalty."

Mick McCarthy admits Cardiff City have to stamp out their habit of conceding penalties if they are to fulfil their play-off dream, and has revealed the club actually came close to signing current Huddersfield striker Yaya Sanogo.

The Cardiff boss, who signed a two-year deal to stay at Cardiff City Stadium this week, watched on as his side were handed a huge let-off at the John Smith's Stadium, with Sanogo steering a spot kick wide deep into the second half.

It was the latest of several penalties conceded by Cardiff this season, and McCarthy admits his side were perhaps fortunate to leave West Yorkshire with a point.

MICK McCARTHY:

"It was a really tough game," he said. "We haven't played particularly well in it.

"They've had a tough schedule as well I think, but we've just been done with the Wednesday, Saturday and then Tuesday, Friday, in terms of our energy levels.

"So we've had to scrap it out, but if you can't win it then don't get beat. The lads have stuck to it again and we've ended up with a good point."

Speaking specifically on the penalty, he added: "We have a problem conceding them [penalties]. I don't like that.

"It was from the throw-in. We just let Sanogo drop off and then they played through us.

"That shouldn't happen. It was a bit of a panic stations and they get the penalty."

"I'm so happy he missed it."

"My players looked tired, I am glad we now have a bit of a break, ready for Watford."
