Cardiff City turn down interest in Mick McCarthy as other clubs eye the brilliant work he is doing, but Celtic link is 'red herring'

Mick McCarthy has put pen to paper on a new two-year Cardiff City deal after other clubs were eyeing him this summer

Cardiff City have already turned down interest from at least one other club for manager Mick McCarthy, who has just put pen to paper on a new two-year contract.

The unnamed side, which is not Celtic, made what the Bluebirds call 'a polite enquiry' about McCarthy's contract situation amid suggestions he was only Cardiff manager until the summer.

Our understanding is other clubs were also monitoring the brilliant work McCarthy has done during his short Bluebirds tenure to date and eyeing potential summer swoops.



Cardiff chairman Mehmet Dalman said it was always the intention of the Bluebirds' hierarchy to tie McCarthy to an extended deal anyway and the negotiations were easy.

But he also feels the new contract creates certainty for the players, staff and City's fans after stories about supposed Celtic interest had emerged.

Despite the McCarthy to Celtic speculation, that was viewed by the Bluebirds as something of a red herring and they were relaxed about the rumours.

However, there was genuine interest from another club who approached Cardiff about McCarthy 10 days ago, while we understand others were also hovering in the background waiting for developments.

It is quite some time since a Cardiff City manager has attracted so much interest from elsewhere, vindication for the Bluebirds that they have landed the right manager.



Dalman said: "I've had one football club, not Celtic, ring me up to make a polite enquiry about Mick.

"I can't say which one, it's confidential and wouldn't be fair on them. It happened 10 days ago and, to be honest, I found it quite refreshing that they acted in such a real gentlemanly way in today's football by doing things correctly.

"I'm not sure if we can call it an official approach or not, do you say that when they ring for a chat about Mick's situation this summer? But it's nice to know the work our manager is doing is being noticed elsewhere.

"I had absolutely no hesitation in telling them it has always been our intention to keep Mick beyond the summer and that's what we have done.

"We always wanted him to stay, although he didn't need to convince us - he's already done that with results on the pitch anyway.

"The players like him, the staff have taken to him, he's taken to the players and the club, he gets on well with Vincent (Tan) and he wants to stay.

"We were always going to extend his deal, just do it at some point, but it's important to have certainty moving forward and that's what we have."




Dalman continued: "One of the main reasons for doing it already, getting it done and dusted, is so we can start looking for players in the summer.

"It would be difficult to bring in new signings, particularly talented younger players, if there were uncertainty in their minds about who the manager was going to be for next season and beyond.

"We've sorted that, hopefully Mick will continue the excellent work he has already started and we can continue to move forward.


"Six wins out of eight is a fabulous effort so far, the players have a bounce in them, and the style of football is better. I thought the performance against Derby was the best I have seen from this team the whole season.

"He's got great experience and you need that in this league, which is so demanding.

same here...and on that note they had a modern philosopher bielsa sidekick type in charge and although were half decent tonight are generally not very good at all...
