Players clambering for Jamaican passports

Thu Mar 04, 2021 10:55 am

It seems that a number of players are now calling up the Jamaican football federation to express desire to play for them now that Jamaica are trying to reach the World Cup 2022.

Michael Antonio, Andre Gray, Demarai Gray, Isaac Hayden, Mason Holgate, Liam Moore, Nathan Redmond, Kemar Roofe and Ivan Toney are all in the process of getting a passport.

I don't know how I'd feel if I was the JFF. These players have chosen not to represent the team in the past and now they are looking on the brink of qualifying they are all jumping on the bandwagon.
On the other hand its more of a chance of getting to the World Cup so its swings and roundabouts :D

I may be wrong but I doubt if any one of them would have turned down England if they had been good enough to get the call.

Nowadays many sports, especially football and rugby union have international sides full of players with no ancestral attachment to the teams they are representing. But in this instance the players mentioned can't be judged too harshly because they obviously do have family ties with Jamaica.

Seems the 'net' is being cast wider and wider and they'll be having transfers next...!

Thought you had to have ancestral roots to be eligible to play senior international football Patents or grandparents if you were not born in the country

FIFA has changed the rules. Anyone over the age of 18 who has spent 5 years continuously in a particular country will be eligible to play for them. In a way you're right though because football has yet to see the full effect of this rule change. Unlike rugby union which is awash with players that have no ancestral ties.

So Bale could theoretically play for Spain ? And most of the Welsh team could play for England as most have spent more than 5 years playing there?

Bale could have played for England through his grandmother... as for playing in England the 4 home nations have an agreement preventing this happening amongst themselves...

Wasnt there talk of Ryan Shawcross playing for Wales at some point on account of him growing up here even though he has no Welsh patronage?
