why? He is in contract talks apparently, so while he may not play again this season unless the club do a u-turn then he is likely to be signing a new contract. I am sure we all wish him a speedy recovery as he has been another major beneficiary of the McCarthy factor and has been back to near his best.

We'd be a shit club if we didn't offer him a new contract imo.

Cardiff have now confirmed the worst news that they feared for Bennett.

"Scans today have shown that @JoeBennett27 sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury in his right knee during City’s match with @dcfcofficial on Tuesday night. He will now be referred to a specialist. We're all with you, Joe!"

The injury rules Bennett out of the Bluebirds' Championship season run-in, and with the 30-year-old out of contract in the Welsh capital this summer, the future remains uncertain for the full-back.

Bennett's misfortune presents youngster Joel Bagan with an opportunity between now and the end of the campaign, and McCarthy backed him to do a job for the Bluebirds.



MICK McCARTHY:


"I've got absolutely zero worries about Joel Bagan," the manager said last night.

"He's very unfortunate that he's got such a good player and experienced player in front of him. Joe's vastly experienced and a good player.

"But Joel has got big things ahead of him and is terrific."

It will take 6-9 months to recover from this so I hope the club see him through and back to full fitness. He will get over this so I hope he does complete a new contract agreement then hopefully we will see him play again in 2022.

Gutted for Joe, always liked him.

We won’t see him now this season, but our club was already ready to offer him a new contract for next season, hopefully that still stands

All clubs do so In these situations but suspect it will be a reduced one for a year......even that is not to be sneezed at considering original wages players are on..

yes there was a bit of talk about a new contract prior to Christmas but nothing since...
personally i would love to see him here next season but the reality is he is out of contract in 3 months..as for the MM factor , he has always been good...

Great player is Joe, never shirks from a challenge, fit fast and dedicated pro. If he is out of contract he deserves a new one if he wants to stay , which I think he does

Never doubted his ability but like many others he was underperforming under Harris - he got caught out of position a lot and looked terrified to play a forward pass. I'm sure we will see him here for a couple more seasons yet...

i kept reading this caught out of position when playing for Warnock as well as NH.... if he hadnt been encouraged to join attacks or even discouraged from doing it.. he wouldnt have been playing everyweek ? its not like he was stood in the middle of the park lost ,he was actually pushing on and both managers, well and Mick realise you cant be in 2 places the same time...

So what happens if he gets a new deal at 20k a week, he’s out for 6-9 months. What if he struggles to get back fully fit?

Any talks on resigning him have taken place but if signs again I can’t see him earning anywhere near what he’s on now. Someone is going to make a difficult decision. We are already carrying Vassel and Tomlin.

As someone said earlier this will be the time we find out whether Joel Bagan is a first team player or a back up. Joe Bennett has been three managers first choice LB and if MM decides Baglan isn't up to it then its likely going to cost the equivalent of Joe Bennett's wages to sign a first choice, so Mr. Tan's decision will be dictated by Joe's progress and who is available come the summer.
