MICK McCARTHY'S CARDIFF THE MOST INFORM SIDE IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP

By Phil Egan

Wednesday 3 MAR 2021

Mick McCarthy remains unbeaten as Cardiff City manager and has the club back in the Championship playoff places.

A few eyebrows were raised when the former Republic of Ireland boss was appointed Cardiff manager just two weeks on from his departure at APOEL after less than two months in Cyprus.

Tuesday night's 4-0 win over Derby County moved Cardiff back up to sixth place in the Championship, a point ahead of Bournemouth.

What has McCarthy changed?

When McCarthy came in Cardiff trailed Bournemouth by 13 points and were 15th in the table but since then, the Bluebirds have won eight games and drawn two.

One of the first things McCarthy did was to switch to a back three and one player to profit from that change is Aden Flint, who had been on loan at Sheffield Wednesday earlier in the season.

The players have also talked about how the 62-year-old has simplified things and it seems to be working.

It also helps that McCarthy has some really good players in his squad, plenty with Premier League experience under their belt.

Every players attitude has changed and everyone gives 110%.

Mick McCarthy:

Leandro Bacuna scored twice in the win over Derby and McCarthy singled the former Villa man out for praise.

"Whenever he’s come on, he’s done really well," McCarthy told the Cardiff club website.

"He’s always contributed, and that’s been brilliant. It was lovely to see him get his goals today, and he gave a really good performance.

"He has skill, ability, power and pace. He can wander around and pick the ball up, but he can also run in behind.

"He is really a very good technical footballer, and his goals have shown that today."

McCarthy also has Welsh internationals Kieffer Moore and Harry Wilson in his squad as well as the experience of Sean Morrison, a long-throw specialist similar to McCarthy in his playing days.

The Cardiff boss will have to rotate a bit with the games coming thick and fast, starting with Friday's trip to Huddersfield.

Mick McCarthy:

McCarthy added: "It’s a physically difficult time for them all, and they have to recover really quickly.

"We’ll be back in tomorrow recovering, but everybody is happy and things are good, so long may that continue.

"We play again on Friday, and we’re being judged every two or three days now.

"It’s a lovely time when you’re winning football matches, but you’ve got to win the next match.

"Tonight’s match is done, the points are in our pocket, and now we’ve got to win the next one."

Cardiff still have 12 games to play so there's a long way to go but McCarthy has the fans believing again as he aims to secure promotion from the Championship for a third time, having done it with Sunderland in 2005 and Wolves four years later.

Such a shame we never got shot of "arris" earlier we very well may have been looking at an automatic promotion place

He’s put round pegs in round holes by identifying best position for individuals
Installed belief how not only in individuals but also as a team how good they are
And fair play the squad has responded to his new a ideas and philosophy how to play football long may it continue

Don't think there is any may well about it if McCarthy had been there at the start of the season with this squad we would almost certainly be in the top two now. Can't really blame the board for not getting rid of him much earlier as he got us to the playoffs last season. Harris managed to delay his sacking by winning four games in succession mid season but we never really looked good enough under him and with this squad we should have.

Every chance we could make the playoffs now but it won't be easy our reamaining fixtures are at about the same level of difficulty as Bournemouth's but they should get a bit better with Solanke and Brooks back. Unlike last season I would fancy us to do well whereas last season Fulham and Brentford were both better than us

Yes! shame he didn't realise that playing players out position didn't bring out the quality in them..... maybe he's learned a valuable lesson from Mick.

He’s done the basics very well and got the players to do the same....playing to our strengths by getting the belief back .
The players lost belief in Harris as he lost his way ....headless chicken by the end.
This squad seems to ideal for MMs management style and tactics .

I think Mick McCarthy has changed the following...

Formation (players in the right places)

Attitudes (no one will, excuse the pun, take the Mick)

Confidence (a winning team is a happy and positive team)

Efficiency (only 27% possession but the clear majority of meaningful efforts on goal and netted 4 to boot)

Expectation (on the floor under the latter Harris tenure)

Simple really, square pegs don't fit into round holes  Harris wanted players to do the things they were not good at too, whereas MM has them doing their best bits, with some extra duties as a team and as individuals. :old: :bluebird:

The team work much harder off the ball. Harris was poor this season but he took us to the playoffs same as mick will hopefully do this season. So for me not a lot difference just de ja vu. The 2 best players at the moment are both Harris signings Moore and ng. If we get to playoffs it’s just the same scenario different season.

Not for the first (or probably last) time, Harris was not the driving force signing these players

Who did he play out of position apart from Bacuna?

Round pegs in round holes cliche gets bandied about a lot but I’m not sure that was the issue. Harris was just tactically inept and couldn’t get the players playing for him this season unlike last year.
