" Wayne Rooney reacts to tonight's game "

Tue Mar 02, 2021 9:59 pm

Wayne Rooney speaks after the heaviest defeat of his managerial career:

WAYNE ROONEY:

"It’s a disappointing result. We had a bit of control in possession, but we didn’t hurt them.

I'm not going to stand here and say we played well, because we didn't.

I don't go over the top when we win, and I’m not going to worry too much today.

We’ve been monitoring the players over the last few weeks, and a few needed a rest. I felt tonight was the right time to give them that. It’s a gamble of course, and it didn’t pay off, but it gave others an opportunity to show whether they should be in the team.

We have to move on, because we have a big game on Saturday [at Coventry City] which we have to be ready for."

Hard to argue with any of that to be fair to Rooney...

I quite like him as a manager. He certainly has grown up over the years and i hope he does well in the trade.

I was surprised why he rested the like of Kazim Richards though.

I think on paper Coventry is the easier game and the more important of the 2 for them...

He may have shown some managerial inexperience on the pitch last night but his post match comments are accurate and mature. Puts some of his more experiences managerial peers to shame.

Yep. All Derby fans I know up here are saying he conceded the 3 points to us before the KO.

I think he knew what he was doing. He knew his best 11 would lose to us so decided to rest some of them and put out his fringe players. I can't say I like that but I can't blame him for doing it. His remarks said so as much and fair play to him there but I would not be happy with him if he did the same to say someone like Barnsley where we need the Tykes to drop points.

He knew that CKR wouldn’t make a difference to last night. Probably wouldn’t have won anyway. It’s really nice if true as we have a certain amount of fear to us now.

Always thought he got a bad press, comes across as a decent man who held his hand up and admitted he got it wrong. I wish him well.

I think he knows his big games are against the bottom six

Aye Neil, its looking that way after his comments last night. It just surprised me at the time he was never used but we know why now.

Spot on. He wouldn't want to risk injuries against a team he's not really competing with, but he wants to be ready for the ones who really are a threat to their position. The key thing was that we were professional and didn't ease off because of the changes he made.
