Are possession stats 28% for us in a game we had total control over and dominated

I’ll take that if we win every game by 4! :-D

Possession is just number of passes completed. 20 passes between your defence and midfield before slipping it through to the striker does exactly the same as one long ball from the GK to the strikers. Only difference is one is worth 20x more in the possession stat.

At the end of the day the main stat to worry about is the score :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

For a team with 72% possession they certainly didn't know what to do with the ball? :laughing6:

I’d love to know what proportion of that 72% was within 25 yards of their goal.

In 1st half fair bit but due to city's press they didn't do it so much 2nd half...... but its common as muck in championship playing out from back, but teams ste not able to press as much as we can because we have players further up the field.... personally find it boring and it costs teams points over season because they lose so much time doing it..

So what did the opposition do with their supposed 72%

Win the game? :? Erm, NO! ;)

Score 4 goals? :? Erm, NO! ;)

The Bluebirds did a job on Derby and worse for them the Bluebirds did it both in style and efficiency and the only 'snowflakes' in sight were once again from the East Midlands...!

All that counts is taking your chances when the opportunity arises, we had a very good percentage off our efforts on target, theor own fans are moaning about meaningless possession ; passing back and sideways,it's what you do in the final 3rd that matters

Against better teams (rooney rested a fair few) we wouldn't get away with do little possession, but last night we played what was in front of us, and took our chances well. We should now fear nobody, they will be taking note of us though :ayatollah:

Didn't a poster predict (tongue in cheek I believe?) That we would go unbeaten till the end of the season? Was it big hill blue?
Wonder what the odds would have been!! We can dream, but it's on to the next game now, but that's nearly a quarter of the season undefeated now :bluebird: :bluebird: :bluebird:

They had seven shots, with just one on target (according to Opta).

We had fourteen shots, with eleven on target.

These stats prove that, although they had more of the ball, they didn't really do anything with their possession. Wayne Rooney has also said that.

It was also what I thought, watching the game. We always seemed in control of the game and looked to attack them whenever we had the ball.

We also had more corners and more "dangerous attacks".

Probably was Big Hill Blue; he's daft enough and attention-seeking enough to post that... ;) :laughing6:

In all fairness I have never seen a game so one sided by a team with 28% possession - so the possession stats mean nothing. We could have been 3 up at half time - it was a definite pen and VAR would have given us one.

Most of their possession was in their own third trying to play around between their back four and keeper but we rarely allowed them to play it out due to our closing down, so they just kept what I would say was 'uncomfortable possession' in the least dangerous place (for them).

I've argued long and hard that possession stats, in the overall game, are next to meaningless.

As a previous poster stated they are based on passes to a team mate......so to get your stats up, just pass it back and for between the keeper and a defender, a yard apart, about 20 times and boom.....you are the dominant team!

They would be meaningful if they were broken down into thirds of the pitch, defense, midfield and attack. That would be an eye opener....but as it stands they are pointless. :bluebird:
