Accidental Death Verdict at Whitts Inquest

Tue Mar 02, 2021 3:29 pm

Coroner Graeme Hughes has recorded an accidental death conclusion.

He said: “On March 7, 2020, he attended a pub in Barry with friends and relatives.

“Over the course of the afternoon/evening he has consumed a quantity of alcohol that has likely impacted his demeanour and steadiness.

“Some time after 9.30pm he was in an area near the toilets and adjacent to a fire door leading to a corridor and steps and outside smoking area.

“During a period of horseplay with a friend and relative he appears to have lost his balance and gone through or caused to open the fire door, fallen, and his head has come into contact with the steps.”

After being transferred to hospital and undergoing an operation Mr Hughes said his condition “deteriorated” and Mr Whittingham later died in hospital.

Mr Hughes recorded the date of death as March 18 at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff and the cause of death as “subdural hematoma (operated)”.

Mr Hughes passed his “deepest condolences” to the family and friends of Mr Whittingham as he ended the hearing.

Absolute tragedy R.I.P Whitts gone but not forgotten.

RIP Whitt’s so so sad.

Still hits me when I read about it.. the first thing we should be planning is a Mark of respect for Whitt’s when fans are back in the stadium

I hope the club are also checking and keeping up to date with his partner and family

I would like to see either a mural or plaque placed somewhere in the ground, perhaps under the concourse in the Canton Stand where the band plays. Would be a nice reminder and mark of respect for arguably the greatest ever player at the CCS to play in a Cardiff City shirt :ayatollah:

Very sad.

I am sure we will all be able to pay tribute when we are back in the stadium.

Such a tragedy and once again my thoughts go out to his family and friends.

One word ... legend ..there will have to be some sort of recognition for him. A mural or something.its so sad losing his life to such an innocuous accident.he will never be forgotten by the city faithful.

Must be an awful memory for the friend or relative in attendance at the time.

""During a period of horseplay with a friend and relative""

I personally would love to have a statue of him some where in or outside the ground has a tribute to him

Got to have a section of the ground named after him best player I have seen in a city shirt after 30 years a supporter. As we know he had a wand as a left foot and his goals were something else. Rip whitts gone but never forgotten.

So sad an absolute legend and the first player you would pick in a greatest city team. I have the dvd of the whole game against Wolves a few years ago when he scored a hat trick and I watch it on occasions and let’s be truthful
“THE BEST GOALS YOU SAW DOWN CITY WERE PETER WHITTINGHAM GOALS”.

You know what lads I'm not going to lie, I just watched this and I'm choking back a few tears right now if I'm perfectly honest.

Each of us following the club during Whitts time has been truly blessed to see a footballer of his calibre and more than that one who loved the club and stayed with us in an era where loyalty is a rare commodity.

So, so gutted he was taken from us so young. f**k naming a stand after him name the whole damn ground after him. He was that special.

Mate I have watched that video several times during lockdown, and feel the same way every time :sad7: a true gentleman, and very loyal to us as a club, and I had the good fortune to meet him on a few occasions at Penarth pier café, very affable young man, not a whiff of "look it's me" about him,in fact the opposite really.

We, as cardiff fans must "ENSURE" the club does something special in his memory. lost a nephew and a good friend in very similar circumstance :sad7: one fell off his bike, and the other on the edge of his bath!! Terrible times they were, so know what his family and close friends are feeling :sad7: "CITY LOVES YOU MORE THAN WE CAN SAY" R.I.P. WHITES. :bluebird: :bluebird: :bluebird:
