" Stuart Attwell today "

Sun Feb 28, 2021 7:03 pm

Following on from Lee Mason's disaster yesterday, there has been another interesting refereeing decision today.

Stuart Attwell was the referee.

In the Chelsea v Man Utd game, it looked like Callum Hudson-Odoi handballed in his own box - Mason Greenwood also handballed in Chelsea's penalty area just afterwards in the same incident.

The referee stopped the game and went over to look at the video replay, because he was told to by VAR.

He decided not to give the penalty. It look to me like it should have been a penalty becsuse Hudson-Odoi appeared to move his hand towards the ball and have his hand in an unnatural position.

But the most shocking part is what Attwell allegedly told the Man Utd captain, Harry Maguire.

According to Luke Shaw and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Attwell told Maguire that he didn't give the penalty because he was worried about the reaction from people and that it would cause controversy.

Surely he has to ignore what the reaction will be and base his decision on whether it was a handball in the penalty area, which it was?

One of the worst cases I've seen yet I think, because of the referee's reasoning.

If that can be proved, he should never referee again imo.

It's more like refs taking back control of decision making rather than have var refereeing game as it's been doing since its inception.... since when have refs worried about what people think? Besides he was in a win win situation with this decision give pen correct if says no hes using his original decision and var wasnt clear enough to change his mind .... obvious error is the reason to change mind was it obvious error? ..

Why are they hanging atwell out to dry? They had no buisness spouting off just because they didn't get a decision their way.... what next refs refusing to speak to players in case he thinks player blabs on social media what he said? Totally out of order regardless if it's TRUE or not.

I agree with the above, that if it's proven or he admits to it then he should be removed.

Like you say, referees normally don't care what the media say. They're used to it by now.

But both Shaw and Ole have no reason to lie, and it would be a weird thing to lie about anyway.

Ned regardless of it being true or not they should not be undermining a referee just because they didn't get a pen..... if got a complaint about him saying something they go to the relevant authority not blabbing it out in public... totally wrong can you imagine what reaction be if refs say shut up go away when they make a dodgy decision because what's said nay be posted on social media or in press?

I see where you're coming from, but he probably shouldn't have said that in the first place.

Solskjaer wasn't going to say anything, but he did when Sky told him that Shaw had already said it.

I do think Attwell could be in a lot of trouble with his bosses now so I get your point.

Why did shaw say it and why did ole admit it was said? usually managers dont see or hear anything when its about a decision on pitch! Smacks of sour grapes and being vindictive because didn't get a decision.... atwell in trouble no doubt but people involved had no right to blab what was said they should have reported it and let authorities deal with it not trial by media.. atwell and other refs are going to be reluctant to tell a captain anything now !

I've made some corking errors on a football pitch. Most owned up to in the moment, but a few you just gotta keep schtwm.

Unless its a cunning plan by Manure , to make referees give them more dubious penalties!!

Man have had 35 pens since start last season! But this was started by chelsea ealier by bating man u about getting pens easily on their website.....so man u are getting their own back? But what was said isnt quite what's reported it's a simple taken out context remark thats been used to beat atwell and get back at Chelsea? At end day shaw should have said nothing but the worm is out of the can well and truly.
