Celtic: Noel Whelan drops Mick McCarthy managerial claim

Even though its true Mick McCarthy is on the short list for the Celtic managers job.

It’s now confirmed Mick McCarthy is in Celtics short list fir the vacant managers job, but has yet to be interviewed.

Celtic for now will stay with their caretaker manager till May.

Nonetheless, if Celtic were to hire McCarthy, he would certainly be a man that would be able to steady the ship at least in the short-term.

Celtic News:

Noel Whelan does not think that Mick McCarthy is the right man to be the next manager at Celtic after it was revealed that he is on their shortlist.

A source has told Football Insider that the current manager at Cardiff City is seen as an attractive option at Parkhead due to his pedigree, availability and links to the Glasgow club.

McCarthy used to play as a central defender for the Hoops, and is out of contract with the Bluebirds at the end of the 2020/21 term.

However, speaking to Football Insider, although Whelan is a big admirer of McCarthy, the former Leeds United and Coventry City striker does not think that the 62-year-old would be a good fit for the Celts:

“Look, I love Mick McCarthy.

“He’s been fantastic at every club he’s been at. I’m sure the Celtic fans would love it being him being part of the Republic of Ireland (setup). That would go down well the fans.

“I still believe they need to look somewhere different. I believe as good as a manager as Mick is, I think there are fresher ideas out there.

“It’s working right now for him at Cardiff. He’ll always get players to play for him, he’ll always have his own style of play but I think Celtic need to look somewhere else.

“That’s no disrespect to Mick McCarthy. I think he’s a fantastic manager, a fantastic person and a manager who won’t skirt around the edges. He will tell you exactly how it is.

“I think they probably needed him this year. Tell these spoilt brats, some of them, they need to get off their high horse and start working hard.

“I think next season, no. It’s probably flattering to Mick that he’s doing such a great job down at Cardiff he’s been linked.

“If they’re going to look somewhere else, you look to a younger, fresher manager. I don’t think Mick McCarthy would be my first choice.

“I think they need to look a little bit further down the age chain.”

McCarthy may not be the right man for Celtic

Although he is a very experienced coach, having previously managed at the highest level in the Premier League, McCarthy may not be the ideal man to take the Bhoys forward.

As Whelan suggests, he is not getting any younger at 62 years of age, and it may now be a better idea for the current Scottish Premiership holders to find a manager for the longer term.

Nonetheless, if Celtic were to hire McCarthy, he would certainly be a man that would be able to steady the ship at least in the short-term.

I heard that their caretaker is doing it until the end of the season?

It certainly won't be Mick McCarthy who is their new manager, whatever the media say.

i really dont think mick is seriously on their shortlist, to me its all agent talk, to force cardiff to panic and give him a longer deal. i mean hes doing great for us, but does anyone seriously think celtic would consider him. after the shambles this season and with lennon they are going to want a big name to appease their fan base

My money would be on Eddie Howe or Frank Lampard.

Man City youth coach Enzo Maresca being very heavily backed, sounds like a done deal.

If by some miracle we scraped a promotion this year these are two of the managers I would like to see considered.

Eddie Howe has already turned us down once though, and I honestly don't think he'd be interested again - even if we were promoted somehow.

Not sure about Lampard, either way. I know he's been linked with both Palace and Celtic.

But, being honest at this point, I'll be shocked if Mick isn't offered a new contract.

So far, he's done a very well job and if he keeps that going then I think he would have earned a new contract.

Yeah I know Howe turned us down well before others on here mate. He was waiting for a premier league club and was happy enjoying a break with his family in Bournemouth. Also his salary was an issue.

Agree it would be an outside chance of getting him.
Lampard similar, I’m not sure he’d come here but I’d go for him.

I’d be shocked if Mick wasn’t offered a new contract as well which I’d be happy with in the championship but if we scraped promotion I’d prefer looking elsewhere without a doubt.

Dalman must have been hanging with NML when he thought Eddie Howe was a good idea.... we were never going to be extravagant with a budget.. .. and even if we were our fans would be in constant meltdown when 100k a week players flop .
