Exactly Ian a home crowd of 3,546 v Rochdale.

Funny our first ever season in League 4 and we spent then over the coming years 9 seasons there.

Our first away game ever in League 4 was Hartlepool away and took 600 fans.

Over the next 14 years, we spent 9 seasons in league 4, thankfully I never missed a home or away game watch Cardiff.

Home Crowds as low as 1,400, away support as low 11 ,30 and 50 fans.

So when fans moan today that We've been hard done by, robbed by owners , We had nothing to rob and where we re these fans then????

Where were the fans when we were in the bottom 3 of league 4?

I know every fan that followed City away during those years in League 4 and I know virtually most fans that went home.

And I dont mean those that were not born or were to young to watch a football game

Just look at Wimbledons attendance in top flight football 5,000.

With the exception of Liverpool & Man Utd they're all low, even Spurs v Man city in Div1 only has 23,764. Let's be fair until the Premier league cam along & shook things up football in the UK was dying as a live spectacle.

My last game before becoming an ex-pat was Oct 1987 against Rochdale. Ironic looking at those fixtures. That game we had just over 1,000 fans and yes the stadium was falling apart.

Spent some time up north that season. Went to Anfield, OT, Maine Rd, Goodison a few times. Never had to buy a ticket. Walked into the terraces for a few quid. One game on the Kop v Villa there was plenty of room. :old:

Recall Mick McArthy playing for Man City but was no match for Ian Rush.

Best game though that season was away at Wolves; a late Paul Wimbleton winner :bluebird:

Also decent away cup trips to Stoke & Shrewsbury.

As I always bang on about people moan about modern football but its a product people want to watch .in the 80s/90s it was on its arse.the premier league and new stadiums brought a renewed interest in the game prior to covid attendances were at a record high.

But we were low from the middle of the 1970’s till the year 2000? Except for Eddie Mays years.

That’s not my point, so many fans who have moaned since the year 2000 and say they were there??????

Football was dying during those days, but sadly we were dead with attendances for nearly 25 years.

In my school I was the only one supporting Cardiff and in a Cardiff school lol
Everyone supported Leeds, Man United and Liverpool

Remember seeing us draw 0-0 at Rochdale possibly that season,a game as exciting as the score suggests think Kenny Hibbit was our manger at the time. We drew the next game 0-0 as well against someone like Mansfield. Happy day but my god we were crap. We deserved some sort of medal for following them.

We certainly did deserve a medal

I was agreeing with you about the low attendances, just saying how low they were everywhere, even for the top teams . Can't remember much about the 80s & 90s having found women, got married etc but I was around in the mid to late 70s and it was bad enough then and went downhill from there.

Check this out 2nd February 1985 Cardiff v Middlesbrough the old second division (todays championship) attendance 2564 .the return game at ayresome park 4259 and even by then Middlesbrough had a big history but their support had deserted them.

Boro went in to bankruptcy and by 1986 Ayresome Park had their gates locked and were playing their home games at Hartlepool.

I was there when they played Port Vale at Hartlepool August 1986 as City played at the sae stadium two hrs earlier and thats why there was so much trouble that day.

Remember we used to play cards on the Bob Bank in those days.. expected to lose every game. Many Parents wouldn’t go because of the hooliganism, plus we were naff. Still had to go tho..
This was just after Luton and Heysel, and football really was in the doldrums..

Annis, my standard answer is ‘if you were there during the Durban era, only then do you know what a poor standard of football at Ccfc is.
Think I went to almost every home game that year and one or two away :bluescarf:

There were two types of fans in those days. Those who just loved professional football at whatever cost however risky and those in the hooligan scene. It was brutal in those days and the attendances just reinforce that

Wrong, most of the fans that went away with Cardiff , I agree we’re lads, but they still loved the City and would cheer them on no matter what and travel everywhere . It was just the way it was but you still loved your club as that was how it was in them days.

Funny though if we had a big name in the Cup, we suddenly would at least triple our crowds , the other fans were not frightened to watch City then

We always had a massive glory support .

Spot on Andrew, and I was there during all his games , if you can call them games.
Let’s say me and Durban had words in the dressing room away at Walsall after the cup game in midweek , we lost 6-3 and he did not care , so after the game we had more than words in front of all the team.
He has to be our worst manager of all time.

It was the season we finally went down to the dungeon league.

Doncaster were a bigger mess than us. Soon after that game they tried to burn the stadium down so to collect the insurance money.

There were about half a coach load of us there with most of us behind the goal and a handful of us in the Grandstand next to the away fans. Tell you what we made more noise that day than what I have witnessed of late.

Exeter away in the cup, Durban had to have a police escort from the dug out to protect him from the city fans :-)

i think there were a number of factors...what happened at both Heysel and Hillsborough , Thatcher declaring war on hooliganism ..and the implementation of the Taylor report all had a big effect.. i doubt Sky would have been interested in the running battles in half empty stadiums of a few years earlier... it has without doubt pushed everything forward but things had already started changing
