Sheffield Wednesday’s Jordan Rhodes wants summer departure with contract set to expire – Cardiff City keen

Sunday 28th February 2021

Sheffield Wednesday striker Jordan Rhodes ‘hopes to make an escape’ from his Hillsborough contract in the summer, with Cardiff City ready to swoop (Mail on Sunday, 28.02.21, pg. 60)

The 31-year-old was linked with a January move to South Wales. Cardiff City wanted to bring him in late in the winter transfer window but would fail in their attempts.

He’s since remained at Sheffield Wednesday and returned to scoring ways having netted twice in this month’s fixtures.

But his contract situation remains in the balance – Sheffield Wednesday have a number of first-team players out of contract in the summer but finances may see a host of them depart.

Mick McCarthy’s Cardiff City could be ready to pounce. The Bluebirds are unbeaten under his watch, having won six on the spin before yesterday’s draw v Middlesbrough.

They’ll likely need back-up for star striker Kieffer Moore in the summer and Rhodes could be just that, possibly more if he can score a few more goals for Sheffield Wednesday in the final months of the season.

After an upturn in form following New Year, Sheffield Wednesday looked to be clawing their way to safety – they went on a run of four wins in six Championship outings but have since lost their last four in the league.

They found themselves two goals up at Luton Town yesterday, but Nathan Jones’ side would score three to complete the comeback and keep Wednesday in 23rd-place of the Championship table.

Up next for the Owls is the visit of fellow strugglers Rotherham United in midweek.

If as needed we do get back up, I hope we go for someone slightly younger personally, rhodes is ok, but he is 32 next birthday,we need to avoid going for older players imho.
But we 100% need back up for poor old moore, who looks out on his feet last few games! Watters? Im not too sure, hopefully he can make the step up soon enough, with a few u23 matches under his belt,we should know soon enough if he can.

Problem we've got is everyone knows Moore is no1 choice so who would want come here as backup? Yes can be a sub or just wait for moore to get injured not a good choice unless are an up and coming striker wanting to step up a league or two....

Its been reported that his wages are the top end of 20k. Unless he is willing to take massive cut I can't see him coming here, especially as we will have no parachute payments next season.

Just bored paper talk.... Who is in charge of our transfer nowadays, I doubt its MM.

We have said we need to bring the average age down and stop recruiting aging journeymen :?

Watters was an up and coming lower league striker, who has stepped up , but as of yet isn't getting any minutes, and the only way to find out if he is good enough,is to either throw him in,and see how he goes, or as MM is doing, give him some time with the u 23's,who are playing some good football,so at the moment it's Moore, with Harris as back up, but if Moore is out for any reason, we will have to adapt the way we play, as we have nobody else who does what he does so well.

I think rhodes would have been ok on a short term deal, with maybe a years option if he performed for us, but I'd still prefer to go for someone younger,as he will be 32 next birthday. :old: :bluebird:

No thanks. 31 year old striker who’s scored about 15 goals in the last 3/4 years.

Sheffield Wednesday star lined up by Mick McCarthy after Cardiff City make January contact

The Bluebirds were in the market for a forward at the end of the transfer window but nothing materialised, however that could be revisited this summer

By Glen Williams

Monday 1st March 2021

Mick McCarthy will reportedly revisit the opportunity to sign Sheffield Wednesday striker Jordan Rhodes this summer.

The striker, 31, is out of contract at Hillsborough at the end of the season and could be snapped up on a free transfer should the Cardiff City boss decide to make a move.

And, according to The Sun, that is exactly what McCarthy is planning to do.

WalesOnline understands the Bluebirds were interested in bringing Rhodes to the Welsh capital at the back end of the January transfer window and even made contact over a potential deal.

Rhodes eventually opted to stay at Hillsborough, but Cardiff are certainly exploring striker options, with Kieffer Moore the only truly established Championship forward McCarthy has at his disposal.

Former Bluebirds striker Cameron Jerome recently revealed that McCarthy attempted to bring him back to Cardiff back in January, with the deal only falling through because MK Dons could not find a replacement before the window closed.

Robert Glatzel is currently on loan at Bundesliga club Mainz, however where his long-term future lies, exactly, appears to be up in the air, especially given McCarthy's blunt comments about his departure last week.

"He was not going to play for me, so there is your answer, quite clearly because I let him go out there," McCarthy said of Glatzel's January loan exit.

"I was more than happy to play Mark Harris instead of him, more than happy to involve Rubin Colwill instead of him.

"I'm glad he is gone out there and he’s scoring. it's good for him and good for the club, for the value of him if he is scoring goals out there."

Should Glatzel leave the Bluebirds this summer, McCarthy would have only Harris and Max Watters, two Championship rookies, at his disposal.

Watters has played just 16 minutes of football under McCarthy and was omitted from the squad all together for the draw with Middlesbrough last weekend with a view to him playing for the under-23s against Charlton on Monday afternoon, just to get minutes into his legs.

Moore is quite clearly the kingpin of this Bluebirds strikeforce, but behind him the back-up looks a little thin and that is clearly the thinking behind the pursuit of Rhodes.

It is understood that Rhodes would be open to a move to Cardiff, should the opportunity rear its head again this summer, after a largely underwhelming spell at Sheffield Wednesday.

He has scored just three times in 22 appearances this term, the first of which came in the opening game of the season at Cardiff City Stadium, but has largely been used off the bench.

Just a quick point, Glatzel has scored the same amount of goals, in a lot less appearances this season !! I really hope we don't go down the route of old (no pun in tented ) by signing players on the way down in their careers  I'd prefer some young hungry striker instead. :old: :bluebird:

Not too sure about Rhodes; but I'll go with Mick McCarthy, if he stays and that were his choice... :ayatollah:
