Mendez-Laing 'busting a gut' to start v Cardiff City this Saturday

The Bluebirds take on Neil Warnock's Middlesbrough on Saturday afternoon and they could come up against sacked Cardiff City man Nathaniel Mendez-Laing

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing is "busting a gut" to make his first Middlesbrough start and has "had one eye" on making it against his former club Cardiff City, Neil Warnock has said.

Mendez-Laing was sacked by Cardiff on the eve of the season when the club released a bombshell statement which stated the player had been released following a serious breach of contract.

It has since come to light that Mendez-Laing was banned twice last season after cocaine was found in his system, with the second offence leading to the termination of his contract.

The winger's second ban meant he was suspended from August 14 to November 14 in 2020, however the ruling did not come to light until January 20, 2021, just days before he linked back up with Warnock at Middlesbrough.

Former Bluebirds boss Warnock admitted that Mendez-Laing was not up to speed and had a couple of weeks on the sideline before making his debut from the bench against Derby County on February 13.

He has three appearances in total under his belt so far, all from the bench, but, as Warnock said ahead of Boro's midweek defeat by Bristol City, the ex-Bluebirds man has been eyeing this Saturday's game against Mick McCarthy's side for his first start.

NEIL WARNOCK:

"He’s definitely in a position now to start - in fact, he’s busting a gut to start," Warnock said in midweek.

"I’ve got to keep him back a little bit.

"But I think he’s got one eye on Cardiff on Saturday and he’s desperate to get some minutes on Tuesday to put himself in a position to start in that one."

I can almost picture the scene .. Mendez comes out at half to keep warm etc. First song up , GrandMaster Flash and White Lines, then Eric Clapton Cocaine, Johnny Cash — "Cocaine Blues" or maybe "cant feel my face" by the Weekend and some Deep Purple speed king to finish off........

Annis he will certainly bust a gut to try and score against us, I expect he is like so many people who have been sacked, think that everyone else is to blame for him being sacked after being caught out doing something wrong, did he say anything about letting city down and all us fans, no did not think so

I was thinking this the other day and just assumed I hadn't seen his statement. We made him a very wealthy player and gave him a season in the prem. He massively let the fans and club down and he hasn't even said sorry for doing it.

The only thing he said was"thank you for the support" cheeky, selfish b@stard!! Hope doesnt score,as that will really be rubbing salt in the wound!

Looking at the Boro forum, they dont rate him. And I don't think that NW is exactly their cup of tea either. Their not to confident about tomorrow either.

I watched him v Bristol city and he looked a one trick pony who’d lost a bit of his main asset, pace. As I’ve said, I hope he plays :bluescarf:

Ultimately he has disrespected our club and all the help and support he was given.

Warnocks comments seem to be inferring that he, NML is moving heaven and earth to play against us as if he has some unfinished business to settle with us.

There is nothing to settle for me the guy is a c**t and our owners and board have behaved with integrity and should be applauded.

I bet that all changed when 'Boro dropped out of the top six ;)

Until then, he was probably accepted for his 'winning' football

Mendez-Laing? Of no interest to us anymore; he let himself, his family and his employers (including financially) down big-time and I think too many people on here rate his time here far too highly; he certainly wasn't one of the first names on the team sheet

I hope a few of our players put in some strong challenges on him, obviously without getting sent off.

I doubt he'll last more than an hour at most.
