'Did someone say Mick McCarthy was a dinosaur?' – Cardiff City legends revel in 'ruthless and gutsy' Bluebirds win and play-off hope

The Bluebirds supporters and legends are now beginning to believe after the win over Bournemouth lifted them into the play-off spots

Thursday 25th February 2021

Cardiff City legends are getting just as excited as the fans after that brilliant win over Bournemouth.

For much of the season, Cardiff were woefully underachieving, given the squad they had assembled, and the play-off spots looked a far cry when Mick McCarthy took over.

There was a mixed reaction to his appointment, with many urging the club to appoint a younger or seemingly 'more progressive' manager.

Those people are certainly eating their words now, with McCarthy having presided over eight unbeaten games including six wins on the bounce to catapult City into the play-off spots.

Cardiff great Graham Kavanagh, though, foresaw the impact McCarthy would have in the Welsh capital.

While the appointment was met with some disquiet, Kavanagh, who knows McCarthy from his time with the Republic of Ireland side, was adamant his former boss would be the perfect fit for the Bluebirds. It seems he has been proven right.

And the former midfielder took to Twitter after the 2-1 win over the Cherries with a tongue-in-cheek response for all the McCarthy doubters out there.

"Did someone say Mick McCarthy was a dinosaur," he wrote, before adding, "Mick is the type of manager most players want to play for. Let’s hope it continues."

It certainly looks as though the players are running through brick walls for him. From front to back the team looks rejuvenated, with the new manager and his assistant Terry Connor seemingly having provided the shot in the arm this team desperately needed.

Wednesday night was the biggest test of Cardiff's promotion credentials yet under McCarthy and they came up trumps to leapfrog the Cherries into the top six.

And former City hero Danny Gabbidon was quick to praise the courageous performance down on the south coast.

"Gutsy to a man that tonight," he wrote while wishing Josh Murphy a happy 26th birthday.

And, in a further backing of the point that Kavanagh was making, Gabbidon also praised City's 'ruthless' streak, having allowed the hosts 68 percent possession on Wednesday night but still coming out on top.

"That’s two or more goals scored now in the last six games with an average possession of about 32 percent! Ruthless efficiency at its very best!"

Other former Cardiff City players also weighed in following the statement victory over Bournemouth.

Ex-striker Andy Campbell wrote on Thursday morning: "Cardiff City last night... anyone else getting excited?? Just me then."

While Anthony Gerrard said: "Cardiff City are right in the mix now, there’s a team every season that make a run at the play-offs late on. Hope they haven’t gone a tad early, that last spot is up for grabs for five sides. Championship is the best league in Europe by far for entertainment."

Another iconic figure during his time at Cardiff City, Darren Purse, also heaped praise on manager McCarthy and hopes the tremendous form is here to stay.

"Sometimes things just work and Mick McCarthy at Cardiff City does just that," he said. "On a great run at present and long may it continue."

When someone posed the question that they should be gunning for second place and automatic promotion now, he replied: "Big ask that, but you never know!!!"

Stranger things have happened, especially in this incredible division, but with the momentum and confidence sky high now, there is no telling just how far City can take this impressive run.

Annis I can't remember a new city manager having a better start than MM. And some on the Bournemouth forum were even shocked that we played some football. Of course we are going get beaten, and maybe have an iffy run, that's football, but I would hope that our fickle fans wouldn't get on MM's back. I keep looking at the home defeats column and thinking that if we'd got 2 wins out of those 7 defeats we'd have been dreaming about autos. Can't wait to get back in the stadium, hope it wont be too long. :bluescarf: :bluescarf: :bluescarf:
