WOULD YOU HAVE REALLY BELIEVED...?

Thu Feb 25, 2021 12:54 am

What a turnaround and let's be honest here, who truly believed it could/would happen?

Just eight short games ago we had gone seven games without a single point, the club was on a downward spiral, the team/squad was in disarray with no real formation/direction and good players being made to look bad by being played out of position

The supporters were certainly disgruntled and those who had previously tried to support the (then) manager were turning faster than a Boris Johnson promise...

The reason? Well, whilst at the time it was a debate between the manager himself or whether it was a poor team/squad and/or a mixture of both

Well, eight games later, the answer is abundantly clear; sadly (for those with any heart) it was a certain Mr N Harris, who had not only lost the support of the owner but also the squad and the supporters

To emphasise the point, in comes Mr Mick McCarthy and one of the first things he says is (quote) "This is the best set up club I have ever walked into and this is a very good squad of players. I think we can work with them..."

First game (hardly any prep time) he goes with what he sees and chooses a team that reflects what he sees in training; not quite what us all-knowing (I jest, of course) supporters would have selected but he explains it and it's difficult to disagree when he says "I'll do this my way and how I see it; not how others tell me it is..."

A battling draw, some welcome changes at half-time and and our first point in eight games; followed by a change of team/formation (notably the restoration of Captain Sean Morrison) for the next game and another draw, which leaves the usual suspects questioning both manager and tactics

By now, Mick McCarthy has had two weeks to work with and evaluate his squad and he is seeing things that the previous manager had clearly missed and he sees up his team according to their strengths

Result? Well, exactly that...results! Six wins on the bounce and an incredible 20 points form the 24 on offer since he arrived

An incredible run of games, which quite unbelievably have tonight seen us climb above our opponents Bournemouth in an incredible to 6th place in the Championship Table

Who would have believed it? Certainly not me and I doubt (being honest) most of you, too?

Superb, Mick McCarthy, simply superb; but no time to let up, so let's keep it rolling  :notworthy: :ayatollah: :bluescarf:

Sven it is an incredible if not miraculous start to his reign as Cardiff City manager.

I bet him and TC have commented to each other 'How did Harris manage to take this team on a 6 match losing streak... it's a bloody good team'.

I also hope Harris is sat at home thinking 'how did I try 5 at the back and got spanked by Northampton Town whilst Ol' Mick goes in and gets it to work right away??'.

The fact is Harris was/is a mediocre, league one coach and Mick is a manager.

I hope that fans don't get too up themselves now and turn on Mick if and when our results do not read DDWWWWWW because we all know there will be a blip along the way.

I do feel Mick has won this team around and it is clear that this team his playing to his tune.

Chris I do not what more to say it really is outstanding to go from where we were into the top six. I am still waiting for the blip, as yesterday i would have been quite happy with a point. I truly think that the new manager bounce has long gone, two points behind reading and we have to play them.
Look out you JB's we are coming for you :laughing5: :laughing5: :laughing5: only joking with their luck they will go up automatically, but you never know

Can you believe how much this Squad's Confidence has been sucked out of them by Harris and his Management.?

As you rightly stated in your thread. No belief, Players out of position, low on energy, class players looking ordinary. Just 8 short games ago!

The little transformation is unbelievable but as expected, MM has instilled that belief which is to go and play with the ability that they have in abundance and, with each other. Long may that continue.

Chris, I really did tell you you’d be happy and here we are. He’s got the dressing room playing and believing at last.

Harris was asking players to do things that were not their primary skillset. I was never really sure Harris believed in it but got suckered into the "right way" bollox.

Mick has developed a belief system that has been very successful for him, I think because it was Mick and his self-deprecating nature we forgot he managed at the international level for a long time, so has seen a thing or two and managed against very good players. Whereas Harris had as much conviction as a Keir Starmer policy announcement ;)

No, I wouldn't have believed, but every year there is one team, hopefully, it is us.

I have to say I am stunned with what’s going on with us. I was quite happy with micks appointment but never in a million years did I predict this. Thought a solid run to the top half was what him and tc would give us but they are unbelievable. The players are putting in unbelievable shifts every game. Also anyone else love listening to mick and tc from the sidelines. They give so much encouragement and passion it clearly lifts the players. Keiffer stayed down after another big effort to win a header and one of them shouted ‘get up keiffer’ which he did and went and pressed the ball. Loving it at the moment!

To be honest I’m not surprised at all. I been saying for weeks on here we have a great squad and we will still finish top 6. But that’s me in also so positive when when it comes to city to point. What I find most unbelievable as poster above touched on is how badly Harris managed us.

Beginning of the season I thought we had a good enough squad for promotion.

Just before MM came in I was thinking we had a good enough squad to just avoid relegation. I was really confused how we went from just missing out last season to this. Most were blaming Harris but I kept looking at the players more than Harris. It's obvious now that where I got it wrong.

I've given up trying to work it out where Harris had got it wrong. I'm just embracing this turn in performances. I've never seen such a turn around in all of my 50 years following Cardiff. I'm still in Cloud 9 and waiting for that first loss. Something tells me I'm going to have to wait a lot longer for that.

Can't disagree with any of that, fella  :ayatollah:

Ian ,the only reasonably comparable season I can remember was the season where Ritchie Morgan took the helm for a while and we went on a run that saw us finish a heady 9th in the old 2nd Division (now Championship) and the club didn't keep him on for the following season; not a popular decision at the time, as Ritchie was a club stalwart

Mick McCarthy has blown that out of the water right now and, like you, I hope we have a long wait as the run continues and the non-losing streak continue :D

Both Mick and the team have made a mockery of some of the comments made by fans questioning both his appointment and the ability within the squad around the time he arrived here.
This is a fabulous run of results and has certainly lifted the spirits of all Cardiff City fans.
Looking further afield, I am a little concerned as to how much financial backing the manager would be given either if we were promoted or indeed for another Championship campaign without Wilson and Ojo.
Nevertheless, let's enjoy for the moment.

I think it shows that the board knew exactly what they were timing of sacking Harris. Lol

I was quite critical of the appointment when it was announced. I always thought he would improve the performances and results - didn't think the turnaround would be so extreme though! But with how we were playing and the emphasis put on his short term contract, it seemed he was appointed to see out the season and avoid relegated.

Cant fault what he's done so far. The team look motivated and well organised which is getting the best out of our players. Its Very similar to our promotion season under warnock - although I think mick has shown he is more versatile with his tactics.

If we carry on like we are, the club will definitely have to tie him down with a longer contract. No doubt he's attracting attention from other clubs.

I always felt mick was the right man at the right time to sort the team out and get us going in the right direction for at leas the short term. However I didn’t think for one minute it would be this dramatic! And I doubt neither did Mick and Terry

square pegs in round holes mate.... he was asking people to do things they did not excel at instead of playing to their obvious strengths... in all fairness until the last few games under him i thought our players stuck at it...we came back from conceding the first goal to grab points in 6 games , and scored the final goal in a couple of games where we lost... while winning all but one game where we got the first goal.... finishing stronger is not a trait of a team not putting a shift in...

I was completely underwhelmed by the signing of Kieffer Moore and would go as far as to say I was actually against the appointment of McCarthy. I've come to the conclusion I know less about football than I thought. I was however glad to see the end of Harris. The current success has shown how woeful we were under Harris became.
