Big Mick: 'We were never under pressure to reach the top six

MICK McCARTHY:

Big Mick: : "I’m not getting carried away. We’ll just keep playing, and we’ll end up with all the points we end up with after another 14 games.”

“We were never under pressure to reach the top six'

Cardiff City manager Mick McCarthy says his side were never under pressure to reach the playoff places, but to avoid relegation.

The Bluebirds are unbeaten under McCarthy with two draws and six straight victories.

They leapfrogged Bournemouth into sixth place with a 2-1 win at the Vitality Stadium.

Cardiff manager Mick McCarthy:

"I am delighted with the performance. I thought we deserved our lead - we were the best team in the first half - and I expected a reaction from them, which we got.

"We knew they were the second best team scoring on transitions and we gave them the opportunity - we lost it and it ends up in our net.

"That meant a tense last 15 minutes but wow, didn't the lads scrap it out? They were great.

"I am learning about the players. I have just found they are a great bunch of lads who are really prepared to put a shift in and actually have got quality as well."

Shhhhhhhsh!! Don't jinx us ffs ;) let's wait & see what develops game by game, remember a lot of us said the same when Harris got us to the play offs!! Not that I disagree with you, just let's not count our chickens until we are promoted :laughing5: :old: :bluebird: CCFC 8-)

He has had an incredible start, but too early to talk about a permanent deal yet.

I would wait until the end of the season and review whatever happens. It keeps everyone on their toes and hopefully focused on the opportunity that now presents itself. All of a sudden it is a different type of pressure as we are now right in the mix - we are going to lose at some point, so also need to see how Mick and team react once the momentum goes.

Man Utd are a great case in point when they made the mistake of confirming OGS ahead of their planned timing as a reaction to him doing well to start with.

Success can make fans giddy, even euphoric, so it's wise to let the dust settle before prompting the board to offer an extended contract to MM.

Although I hope not, it is feasible that the novelty of having MM as their manager will wear off and the players won't be able to find the extra 10% they're giving at present.

There will be bumps in the road ahead and it will interesting to see how the management team and the players cope with it, especially as the players were unable to stop themselves going into freefall before MM was appointed.

For what it's worth, I think the management team have enough tactical nous and experience to guide the players to a play-off place and considering where they started from, it would be inconceivable for them not to receive a contract extension.

Don’t think Man Utd made much of a mistake with OSG, seem to be doing ok to me. He was simply the wrong manager at the wrong time for us. He is very Fergie like, makes a lot of changes and builds over time, not really what we were after but something Manure are willing to go through. It does make me laugh how a number of our fans want to change to a more passing and modern game and somehow expect it to change overnight. OSG would have changed us like that but it was going to take a lot longer than our fans or owner wanted. We just have to accept what we are and enjoy it.
