Today's ref

Gavin Ward... no not our ex keeper!

Never really had any issues with Mr Ward, and all we ask is consistency.

Saturday against Middlesboro we have the Australian Jarred Gillett. Have to say I've been quite impressed with him, and comes with a decent pedigree.

Very good referee gillet surprised he hasn’t moved up to group 1 referee

Won't be surprised to see Gillett make the jump up to the Premier League over the next couple of seasons.

Some very well since he came over from Australia to the EFL.

Hopefully he has a good game tomorrow.

Am sure I read he came over here on the promise of a Premier fast track.

I Reffed top of Welsh league, and did a couple of prestige pre-season games, and the best refs man manage so well, which is why there are a few that I hope to never see at CCS again.

One who has surprised me (and not one of the two above) has been David Coote. So often looks like a rabbit in headlights, afraid to make decisions. The fact he has made it...? Jared should be a show in.

Agree about Coote.

He often seems more interested in having a laugh with the players.

It's a big jump up to the Premier League, which is why so many struggle there.

But they do need a couple of new referees to improve the standard, which is why I can see Gillett getting promoted soon.

I still don't think the standards of Premier League refereeing is dropping, but I think some of them are getting too old which means they're more likely to make mistakes.

They're split in three groups.

The inexperienced ones - Peter Bankes, Simon Hooper, Darren England, Robert Jones, David Coote

The experienced ones - Mike Dean, Martin Atkinson, Stuart Attwell, Kevin Friend, Andre Marriner, Craig Pawson, Graham Scott

The top ones (by that, I mean those who tend to get given the big games to referee) - Michael Oliver, Anthony Taylor, Paul Tierney, Chris Kavanagh

You could also list Oliver and Taylor in the experience ones.

What this proves is that there are a lot of them who have been doing it for a long time, and some of them are making more mistakes due to this.

But they're still there because those coming through aren't good enough - like Coote, Bankes, England, Jones and Hooper.

Likewise there are only five top referees who get given most of the big games (there are exceptions obviously). Because they're refereeing so many top games a season, the likelihood of them making mistakes increases.

Rob Jones, another good referee. Again, body language, isnt animated, doesn't do the big 'look at me' and be the biggest personality on the pitch.

Interesting, but I wouldn't put Paul Tierney in the top bracket. Personally I'd rank him with the likes of Banks, Coote etc.

I don't rate Tierney either but he tends to get quite a few big games. Been given Leicester v Arsenal this weekend which is relatively high profile.
