McCarthy on the top six: ‘If you consider the run of defeats

Sun Feb 14, 2021 10:09 am

Mick McCarthy on the top six:

‘If you consider the run of defeats and now we’re unbeaten, let’s see where we end up. I’m not getting carried away because you can soon lose a few on the bounce. I’m glad you’re talking about the play-offs rather than saying it was a shitty performance!’

Wise words from MIck. I am not getting carried away at all. We were pulled all over the place by Coventry yesterday and if they had a finisher it may have been different. We looked tired too. I am expecting a defeat on Tuesday and anything more will be a pleasant surprise. McCarthy has done a great job so far getting the most out of a disjointed squad. It has talent but is no where near good enough for the play offs. If Tomlin was fit and on form that may make the difference but alas I think he is a busted flush now. I will be content for a top ten finish, blood some youngsters and evolve the midfield for next season. We have to retain and pass the ball better to think about the premier league.

Sorry but this is just nonsense. Have you learned nothing from our promotion season under Warnock. That season we were pretty useless at passing the ball and won match after match against sides that passed the ball better than us but finished nowhere and were even relegated whilst we were promoted. Yesterday Coventry were brilliant at passing the ball pointlessly in areas that didn't hurt us and got stuffed they never looked remotely capable of winning the game.

Do we have a disjointed squad? I don't think so we could do with another right back if Ng is injured but Tuttu when fit will provide that but otherwise I don't think our squad is in any way disjointed. Why do you think Tomlin is a busted flush? He is out injured at the moment but may well come back as good as ever. Are we nowhere near good enough for the playoffs? The fact that we are up to seventh and on a winning run suggests that amazingly we actually might just be good enough for the playoffs even after losing six league games in succession and just needed a more competent manager than Harris. We made the playoffs last season with probably a worse squad the n this one.

A glass half full view, fair enough. The Warnock promotion team had Gunnarson, Gruic, Ralls and Brayson in the middle of the park. We also had Bamba and Manga at the back. The spine of that team was very strong. The current squad is not the same, no where near it. Football is moving on now and I dont think the Warnock style cuts it anymore. I would loved to be proved wrong about Tomlin but injury has blighted his career and this is why he is a busted flush. Move him on this summer.

Don't get me wrong I love Gunners but Vaulks is technically a very similar player. Ralls is obviously still here and Bryson was a tidy player and arguably better than what we have in carrying the ball box to box although Bacuna isn't too bad in that role (at least better than he is at RB!) I'd say Pack is can play that holding midfielder role as well as Grujic but I'm in a minority in liking Pack as a footballer.

Defence Bamba and Manga were superb compared to what we have now I think we were probably a bit better placed (Flint is just too similar to Morrison) but the back three is getting the best of them. I'm excited to see Ciaron brown though as I've heard only good things but it is hard to drop a defender when on a winning streak.

Upfront I think we have a lot more firepower though. Wilson, Ojo, Murphy, Hoilett (to a lesser degree now) and Tomlin on their day are all game changers and Moore is the most complete forward we've had since Bothroyd.

On balance I'd say this squad is up there with that one, but more importantly better than what we had last year when we made the playoffs. We beat Luton next time out and Rotherham pick up their form and beat Bournemouth and who knows where things could end up...

but there was nothing for a decent striker to finish...they had 1 goal ,a header against the bar and a bunch of blocked shots taken out of desperation as there really was nothing on...think that discipline by us needs to be applauded tbh.....they did not pull us anywhere because every time one of the them thought about a shot there was at least 1 blue shirt in the way.. we did look tired but even out on our feet it was still more than adequate against a team thats objective seemed to be to pass the ball until we had everyone behind it...
