NOT GOOD: " MICK McCARTHY GIVES UPDATE ON LEE TOMLIN "

Sun Feb 14, 2021 1:46 am

Lee Tomlin, has set back, as his hip plays up and withdraws from training.

Costing Cardiff at least £100,000 a month with NI etc

Mick McCarthy was asked about Lee Tomlin's return to the first team, during his press conference after the 3-1 win over Coventry City.

Mick had previous hoped that Tomlin would be available again for the Preston game on February 20th, but has now said that won't be happening.

Updated: Lee Tomlin hip not mended, so could be at least another month as was unable to train properly so had to stop.

Full quotes from the manager below:

MICK McCARTHY:

"It's not happening. We'd encouraged that, definitely (for Tomlin to come back for February 20th). But he's come back and trained two or three times with the Under 23s and then gone off because his hip has been bothering him.

The programme was he was going to train for two or three weeks with the Under 23s, have two Under 23 games and then train with us.

He's not completed two or three weeks training and he's not played those two Under 23 games, purely and simply because his hip's bothering him.

Unless that gets sorted out, it's unlikely he'll be available for the first team any time soon.

I'm still waiting for Lee Tomlin to complete those two to three weeks training and then play a couple of games."

50 odd games in over 3yrs.

We can’t keep carrying players.

Over the last few years we've been carrying some 'crocks', I often wonder is it a lack of motivation to get match fit or is it a general weakness and physical inability to get to and maintain a certain level of fitness? Some players are more inclined to make an effort and put the hard yards in than others and they're the ones who recover from injury quicker.
Not sure this applies to Tomlin, Vassell's or a few others who we've had to pay off contracts for in the past?

His form warranted a new contract. No way would he have taken a pay as you play deal.

Had he not been given one the club would have got stick about lack of ambition.

It is a pain to be spending that with no output.

Wasn’t his contract out at the end of the season? He was very instrumental in our play off push.

yes it was... and yes he was.... but this wasnt some teenage sensation... 30 plus whose career had been a huge under achievement and who we had tried but failed to move on in 3 windows suddenly deciding he best get fit as it was his final year... not sure we were in any great danger of anyone stealing him..

But imagine another team had seen his form and took him off us for free. Would have been Tan lacking ambition all over the place.

In hindsight it was a poor choice to give him a new contract. But hindsight is exactly that.

As a pro you would like to think he just wants to play competative games every week
But he does have a weakness "pies" and struggles with trainning regime some players just want to play saturdays and thats it

I’m guessing Jonny Williams was brought in until the end of the season to cover Lee Tomlin as even if everything had gone to plan, he would have still had to get match fit. It shouldn’t effect us too much this season as we also have Harry Wilson, but when/if Williams and Wilson depart, a fit and able Tomlin will be some asset for next season. Providing he can maintain fitness, which has been an issue, hence the operation to find a solution.

At the time, based on his immense form, the new contract was the correct decision in my opinion, but hindsight has so far proven otherwise.

With you on that, Tomlin shine to get a new contract , over the yrs Tomlin himself had caused his own downfall. Could of been a great player.

How much would someone of his quality cost to replace then? After the season he had last season can you imagine the outcry from the fans if we let him go? You've defended warnocks injury prone signings saying he didn't have a crystal ball. The situation is no different now. No one could have known how serious his injury was going to be. Its not a niggle keeping him out, he's had surgery like.

Sounds like Tomlin will be involved with the u23s today. Hopefully he'll be back with the first team soon. He could be the difference between us making the playoffs....again.
