About Luton Town

Luton Town Football Club is a professional association football club based in the town of Luton, Bedfordshire, England, that competes in the Championship, the second tier of the English football league system. Founded in 1885, it is nicknamed 'the Hatters' and affiliated to the Bedfordshire County Football Association. The team plays its home matches at Kenilworth Road, where it has been based since 1905. The club's history includes major trophy wins, several financial crises, numerous promotions and relegations, and some spells of sustained success. It was perhaps most prominent between 1982 and 1992, when it was a member of English football's top division, at that time the First Division; the team won its only major honour, the Football League Cup, in 1988. Luton Town have a long-standing rivalry with nearby club Watford.

The club was the first in southern England to turn professional, making payments to players as early as 1890 and turning fully professional a year later. It joined the Football League before the 1897–98 season, left in 1900 because of financial problems, and rejoined in 1920. Luton reached the First Division in 1955–56 and contested a major final for the first time when playing Nottingham Forest in the 1959 FA Cup Final. The team was then relegated from the top division in 1959–60, and demoted twice more in the following five years, playing in the Fourth Division from the 1965–66 season. However, it was promoted back to the top level by 1974–75.

Luton Town's most recent successful period began in 1981–82, when the club won the Second Division, and thereby gained promotion to the First. Luton defeated Arsenal 3–2 in the 1988 Football League Cup Final and remained in the First Division until relegation at the end of the 1991–92 season. Between 2007 and 2009, financial difficulties caused the club to fall from the second tier of English football to the fifth in successive seasons. The last of these relegations came during the 2008–09 season, when 30 points were docked from Luton's record for various financial irregularities. Luton thereafter spent five seasons in non-League football before winning the Conference Premier in 2013–14, securing promotion back into the Football League. More success soon followed, with Luton being promoted from League Two and One in successive seasons in 2017–18 and 2018–19, meaning Luton now play in the Championship, for the first time since 2006–07.

Yes and it will be good to watch the match on a big telly rather than a an I pad. Does anyone have one of those smart TVs ? I presume with a smart tv you can watch the match on the TVs rather than a computer I would obviously much prefer to do that. I almost knocked my I pad onto the floor when Keifer scored our second yesterday.

For the matches that are on Cardiff City TV, I just link my computer to the TV with a HMDI lead.

Really simple way to do it, but I expect there are other ways as well - like a smart TV, as you say, or some sort of stick.

Jonny Williams now in contention for debut but Lee Tomlin suffers setback

Mick McCarthy says Jonny Williams is in contention to make his Cardifff City debut against Luton Town on Tuesday night, but Lee Tomlin has suffered a setback in his bid to return to full fitness.

Williams signed for the Bluebirds on the final day of the January transfer window, but is yet to make his full debut as a City player following a knock picked up in training.

However, McCarthy says he is now in contention to face the Hatters, and with attacking players like Josh Murphy putting their hands up for a place in his first-team plans, he admits the return of the Wales international has given him a positive selection headache.

"Jonny Williams should be coming back," he said after the win over the Sky Blues.

"It's great. There's nothing worse than having injured players and you're desperate to get them fit because the others aren't playing very well.

Luton Press:

Nathan Jones' Luton Town return to action this evening, when they play host to Mick McCarthy's rejuvenated Cardiff City at Kenilworth Road.

When the two sides last met, back in November, the Bluebirds battered Luton 4-0, and the Hatters will be out for revenge in what should be a fiercely-fought contest at LU4.

Speaking ahead of the match, Jones revealed he'll be continuing to use Harry Cornick's long-throw as a not-so-secret weapon, and insisted: "We’re not too proud to do that.

“We’ve always had enough in our armoury to score comfortably but when you are at Championship level, it’s a real test week-in, week-out and we have to find ways to win games and get goals.

"We’re not too proud because we are going to come up against a side tomorrow (Cardiff) that has a massive long throw."

If both machines support mirroring that's good as well saves having to plug in lead.

Luton Town manager Nathan Jones:

"It's a big run of games, we've got a really tough one on Tuesday, and all the squad is going to be needed.

"We need people fresh, we need people motivated to go at it and really do well.

"I think we have a group that can do that."

Cardiff City manager Mick McCarthy:

"Under Nathan Jones last season they make a miraculous escape [from relegation], a brilliant escape.

"He was fabulous before he went to Stoke, he did an amazing job with Luton, getting them up and how they were playing.

"He knows his way around and he knows how to get the best out of that Luton team.

"I haven't seen them, I haven't been watching them, but I know they will be passing, moving, a good footballing side and well organised."

Match facts

Luton are winless in three home league matches against Cardiff (D2 L1) since a 2-0 win in December 2002.

Cardiff are looking to win four consecutive league matches against Luton for the first time since November 1980.

Luton have lost only one of their last eight home league games (W3 D4), falling to a 0-2 defeat to QPR in January.

Cardiff have gone unbeaten in each of Mick McCarthy’s first three away league games with the club (W2 D1) – they are looking to win three in a row on the road in the league for the first time since July 2020.

In his Football League managerial career, Cardiff’s Mick McCarthy has faced Luton Town more often without losing than any other club in the league (9 games – W4 D5).

Well, that's five games now without new signing Jonny Williams. How bad was that kick on the back of the knee?!

Not even in the squad.

Maybe Charlton could not wait to move him on??

Averages 14 games a season incl sub, in the last 10 years.

100% Williams must not be kept on next season.
