UPDATED: BBC says NML was banned for Cocaine & not just once

Fri Feb 12, 2021 3:08 pm

UPDATED:

Confirmed: Mendez-Laing was caught twice and failed Cocaine tests on two different occasions while he played for Cardiff City.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing's ruling states he had already been banned previously in the season, between Feb 7 and May 7, after returning a urine sample which was positive for a cocaine metabolite in December 2019. Was charged on April 21 and backdated to Feb 7 1/2

Pertaining to his most recent offence, he admitted to taking cocaine at 10pm on the evening of July 3. The next day, he played 66 minutes of Cardiff City's 1-0 win over Bristol City 2/2

His sample showed metabolites of cocaine on 09/12/2019 (provisionally suspended on 07/02/2020, formally suspended on 21/04/2020 and 3months were backdated to provisional date) and 04/07/2020. That may help explain why club dismissed him.

Media Wales:

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing received undisclosed ban for previous cocaine offence at Cardiff City and played 17 hours after taking drug.

Still don’t see why we didn’t re-sign him following his suspension.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing cocaine ban:

Mendez-Laing had a three month ban from football and then 18mths later a further 6mth ban and then Cardiff City tore his contract up.

Live updates as reason for Cardiff City sacking revealed

The former Cardiff City player is now with Middlesbrough, having reunited with former Bluebirds boss Neil Warnock

Nathanial Mendez-Laing was sacked from Cardiff City for cocaine use, football authorities have now revealed.

The Football Association has confirmed that the 28-year old was handed a three-month ban after returning a positive drugs test on July 4, 2020.

Cardiff subsequently sacked the player in September for what it described as an "alleged breach of contract", a move which baffled fans at the time.

In a statement, the FA revealed: "The Middlesbrough FC player provided an in-competition urine sample to The FA via UK Anti-Doping officials on 04 July 2020 while playing for Cardiff City FC and it was found to contain metabolites of cocaine once subsequently analysed.

"Nathaniel Mendez-Laing admitted the charge but was able to explain that the substance had been ingested out-of-competition in a context that was unrelated to sporting performance. An independent Regulatory Commission was subsequently convened to decide an appropriate sanction and, in line with the revised 2021 WADA Code that permits reduced sanctions for ‘Substances of Abuse’, applied a back-dated three-month suspension from 14 August 2020."

'He has got to get his career back on line' - Warnock

Speaking to BBC Radio Tees last week, Middlesbrough boss Neil Warnock said of the player: "I think we all make mistakes.

"I do know the boy obviously, I signed him from Rochdale, I have had him three years through ups and downs and everything. Sometimes you get in a situation like Mendez has got in.

"There were one or two other clubs after him and as I said to his man (agent) and himself, I think you are better off coming with me in the circumstances now because… he has got to get his career back on line really."

Because he had let the club, and more importantly us the fans down big time(and not the 1st time according to Annis,he has done it before!!) And the club paid him the 1st time during a ban.

He has a lifestyle most can only dream of,and as a free agent has no doubt earned a wedge of a signing on fee too from all this? Seems it has paid off, him breaching contract!! The club has acted correctly inho, set an example to any others who may think of steaying off the path.

Seems the only losers in this is Cardiff City.

There was a lot of gossip about what he actually did but now it’s in the open; it happens, he left and it’s history.

Ffs so he gets thrown out due to using cocaine. Nonsense decision.
3 month ban without pay that's all Cardiff should of done.
He didn't rape anyone or beat someone up ffs. He made a bad decision. Nothing more and nothing less.

Doesn't appear to have made any apology to the club or the fans for his stupidity. Glad we have taken the action we have - good riddance.

For me people make mistakes. He’s a city player with a problem I for one wouldn’t have been more than happy to get behind and support as I do with all things city. Shame about you negativity. But each to they own opinion. Respect.

Paul,

Correct and in my opinion he should of been banned for longer the 2nd time.

Why is it negativity? He was supported the 1st offence, then does it again! You will find im far from negative regards our club, but as you say,all a matter of opinions, but I know when I had a business,I would give everyone a 2nd chance, but if they committed same thing again, then sorry, gone!!

Re: BBC says NML was banned for Cocaine and not just once

Brass tacks -winners and losers :-

Winner - Mendez - he is back in professional football getting good money and help with addiction.
Winner - Neil - He knows he has a player on a free that will do a great job
winner - Boro fans - they'll love him and know he's a personal payback to Warnock.

Losers - Us , no transfer fee, he's not playing for us

Why is it always us ?

I totally understand the clubs stance and have no problem with it. Just you seem negative to me. I know you felt I’ve been negative in the the past when I wasn’t. And you were comfortable enough to express your opinion to me, and because of that I feel comfortable with you.

Like I said it’s all opinions nothing more no right or wrong view just different.

Its absolutely the right decision by the club Annis, once bitten, twice shy!!
He obviously didnt care for the club, threw it in their faces by repeating same offence!!

What gets me is he is the only winner out of his offence! The club lose an asset, but he does fine??

Loved him as a player, but he had to go,simple.

Paul,

He had no respect and as a football star, the fans looked up to him.

Our club did right, just wish he had served longer as it’s not affected his career at all, our club lost out.

Don’t forget twice he did it.

If we were to push this to the nth degree has he not bought the club into disrepute somewhat?

I'll criticise the club a lot.

But in this case, I think they made the right decision to sack him and not try to re-sign him.
