‘ Charlie Oatway ‘

Thu Feb 11, 2021 6:06 pm

Charlie Oatway. Midfielder signed in Aug 1994 from Yeading. Oatway made only 40 appearances for the club, scoring once, but was a fan favourite. He left to join Torquay on a free in Dec 95. At the end of his time here, he was jailed for ABH after a fight outside a chip shop.

I didn't know he was jailed for ABH. Always good to remind yourself that City once finished 22nd in what is now called league two (the fourth division!). We were awful and Oatway starred along with other cloggers like Gardener, Harding and Scully. I remember watching them at Torquay in a 0 v 0 draw where the football was truly non league in standard.Tony 'Phyllis in a skirt' took some proper stick from the fans that night for being utterly useless. At least the banter on the terraces was good back then.

He definitely made a big impact in his short time at Ninian Park. A very spirited player who gave his all.

Oatway's full name is Anthony Philip David Terry Frank Donald Stanley Gerry Gordon Stephen James Oatway. The reason behind this rather unusual name is the fact that both his parents were Queens Park Rangers fans, and decided to give their son the names of QPR's entire 1973 first team squad. When his parents told his aunt the proposed name, she said "he'd look a right Charlie", and the name stuck.

Watching Charlie Oatway was one of the reasons that was my last season so a good few years. He was awful, nearly every challenge was a potential legbreaker.

15~20 years later we had the like of McPhail and Whitts in midfield. How we have grown, although a lot would love an Oatway type in the team nowadays.

Can you imagine Oatway with the current rules and refs. There would be spread betting on the time he received his marching orders
