Bacuna okay?

He’s fine. He’s trained fully today. He’s okay.

Mick McCarthy

MICK McCARTHY:

Jonny Williams available?

NO. We are going to make sure he’s OK and make sure he is available for the rest of the games.

We don’t want to rush anyone back. We have got games coming thick and fast. If they have to miss one and then they’re fit for the next five, six, seven, eight. That’s better to me than rushing someone back and getting 40 minutes out of the next five or six. That’s daft.

Mick McCarthy

Smithies out too

Whatever it was, of all the times to get a virus that isn’t coronavirus, it completely wiped him out.

He’s not available, he’s out.

It really took it out of him.

On the upside, Dillon was excellent. You don’t want players missing, but when you get players replacing them you want them to have a good performance and he did.

There is only one slot as a goalkeeper and he was very good at both games. When he came on against Bristol, especially when they launched a freekick straight at him when he came on. He was very good the other night against a very tough opposition at Rotherham.

Two fantastic results, how pleased have you been?

I’ve been delighted. They’ve responded to everything.

I looked at the squad and arguably it’s probably the best squad I’ve inherited.

Taking a job when results haven’t been going well for Neil [Harris] prior to me, then me getting the job, it’s been really pleasing. Good players and quite clearly, having seen the last few games we’ve had, they have got a real work ethic as well.

They’ve had to scrap, especially on Tuesday in the snowy conditions.

18 games remaining, always one team that can storm their way into the top six, can you be that team?

MICK McCARTHY:

We’ve had two really good results. But what we can’t do is be complacent. We’ve got eight points from four games, but we don’t suddenly start believing we are this team who can press all the way.

We have got to win tomorrow and get something out of the next game at Luton.

If we can do that for six, seven, eight games, then we can start believing. What I don’t want to do is to start bigging it up and then suddenly find we trip ourselves up against Coventry tomorrow.

I only look as far as the next game. That’s a bit boring I know.

But if you’re saying to me on Monday ‘Oh Mick another great three points’, I’ll be delighted. But there’s a big ‘if’ there as Coventry are going to be a hard nut to crack.

MICK McCARTHY:

Lifting the confidence?

I don’t know if that’s the case.

Clearly, I’ve had it myself, I’m not immune to it, when you lose games, confidence goes, belief goes, and people look for answers. Sometimes they’re just looking at others and not at themselves.

How do you restore that?

It didn’t look like it would be restored 2-0 down at Barnsley, but the 2-2 draw showed the willingness to work and fight back. That started it.

Another draw, two great wins and restores the self belief that you can win games again.

MICK McCARTHY:

Must have lots of respect for Mark Robins?

Absolutely.

With that, they don’t expect to be in that position, but it’s not a big surprise for them.

When teams are supposedly going to do well in the league and find themselves in the lower end of the league, that’s when players find it hard. They don’t think they should be there.

Mark brought them up, they’ll play the same way, good runners, good movement and not frightened to express themselves.

Racist abuse in football, is it too far down the road with social media?

I’m not that au fait with the platforms because I’m not on any of them.

I do realise I’m 62 and I’ve decided to miss the boat on that.

I’m not bothered what anyone thinks about me. I don’t want to get abused because I certainly would, no doubt!

But it really has an awful effect on the person abused.

Why in this day and age they can’t be identified. The secret bullying, when you can just hide and not get caught, is dreadful.

MICK McCARTHY:

Encourage players to come off platforms?

They win then.

If they do get abused, everyone knows who has done it, that would stop it in an instant.

I’m not on it and have no intentions of going on it. As tough and resolute as I think I am, I still don’t want to read people’s opinions on me.

The younger generation want to be on it and they should be able to do it safely.

MICK McCARTHY:

Do you see the lift in spirit?

Yes. First day, they all knew who I was and they all had an opinion. Didn’t know what I did, what I do with TC. I just recognised instantly if someone hit a bad pass, arms went up in the air. I just didn’t like that. But I’ve seen that before in the past.

There was one or two this morning that we had a little bit of a bark at, but it was done in a different way.

I can certainly see there’s a bit more, it’s natural. You win a couple of games, people are happier and more confident. We’ve got to keep that going. It’s a more confident team now.

Flint fitting in well - he once troubled your Ipswich side

I can’t sign all the players that troubled my Ipswich side in the past, because quite a few have done that. Aden was excellent at Bristol City. I was really happy to inherit him actually. To be getting him as a player. I’ve only ever had positive thoughts about Flint. He’s not disappointed me, he’s been excellent. The 3 lads at the back have really responded well to it and I think have played very well. They’ve reacted off each other and organised themselves very well as a three or a five. Aden’s been excellent.

MICK McCARTHY:

Is Ng a bit of a leader on the training ground?

It would take a lot for him to be a leader with Curtis Nelson, Aden Flint and Sean Morrison, and some of the other boys in here. But he gets on and does his own job perfectly well. He’s not one of the loud voices you hear. But he always seems to have that bit of humour about him. He’s a lovely young man and a nice personality.

Mick McCarthy

Ng - How impressive is his progress?

I bet Perry has endeared himself to the fans because he’s a very good footballer. He’s come from the academy at Crewe of course. Dario Gradi always makes sure players understand their job and they’re technically good footballers. You can see that in him. I think he’s learning about the Championship and the physicality of it and what we require from him. I really like him. He’s a very, very good footballer with a really bright future. I’m delighted with him.

Best start for you at a British club, have you been surprised?

I’m really pleased. I’m not surprised at the way they reacted to me and TC.

We may not have had better starts than this but we have done pretty well.

I was with Ian Evans at Wolves, but then I was with TC and we went to Ipswich and they had seven points in 13 games and we ended up with 60.

Whatever your start is, it’s about accumulating them over a period of time.

It doesn’t bother me, I just want to pick up points.

MICK McCARTHY:

We spoke about Rotherham and Coventry, after this weekend there could be significant movement?

Everyone keeps giving me the ‘if’. If we win at the weekend we will be where we are!

It sends a message to ourselves that if we win and end up with 11 points from five games, it’s a message to us that we’ve actually got good players and good lads.

We should be looking at the backsides of the top six, not the noses of the bottom three.

We know how significant the last two results were, but we need to keep getting wins

Last Coventry game really dented Cardiff, must put that right?

Did we lose at Coventry? Well, if I’m a player and I’ve lost to someone I don’t want to lose again.

But it’s all about us, about Cardiff, about winning games.

Re: MICK McCARTHY:

Cardiff recording back-to-back wins for the first time in three months took them into the top half of the table and within a win of Warnock, which is remarkable after performing so poorly for so much of the season.

With a new manager Big Mick, a new shape and renewed confidence, Cardiff can stop looking over their shoulder, for now at least, and instead focus on replicating last year’s assault on the play-off places.

Maybe they won’t be able to muster the same momentum this time and will come up short, but there’s hope again and if nothing else, that is something to build upon. With Lee Tomlin set to lace his boots again very soon, there’s no harm at all in getting a little excited again. It’s certainly been a while :thumbright: :bluebird: :bluebird:

MICK McCARTHY:

You and TC are a team, he is integral?

Absolutely. People get pre-conceived notions of me, forming an opinion without meeting someone.

But TC has been a big part of my career since joining me in 2008.

I saw him as a coach, a very loyal person, I trust him with the keys to my house. I might not let him have the keys to my car, but my house!

He makes me better. And I like to think I make him become a better coach.

Players react well to him?

Absolutely. You couldn’t not!

He is a very good coach, a great person. But you are working with players all the time.

His attention to detail is very good.

You kind of think he is the good guy, but he is able to nail them just as much as I am!

It’s very rare. We demand out of them, but we are consistent in our behaviour with them.

It doesn’t mean to say we don’t like them or don’t interact with them.

Wherever we have been we have had good relationships with players and I hope that continues.

I make the rules, but with TC there is never a mixed message. He always backs what I say up.

If anyone questions him he has got my full support.

New manager bounce, believe in that?

It seems to happen, doesn’t it? It’s just whether you can continue that.

Why is there a bounce?

I’ve had jobs when I’ve not had that bounce. I went into Sunderland and didn’t get any bounce there!

I felt for Neil Harris leaving. For whatever reason, just a new face, a new face, something different and you get a response.

You hope you get one every time, because if you don’t there is a long way back.

What have you got to prove in this division?

I’ve had a fairly decent career in the Championship. Just because I was 62 last week doesn’t mean I want to pack it in.

I want to prove to myself every day and every week that I can still get a tune out of people.

And I would still love a crack at the Premier League, I’ve got to be honest.

I’m not suggesting we are going to do that this year. I would like to enhance my record in the Championship.

Sol Bamba said he was feeling good

It puts reality back into life. Football is not reality sometimes.

I saw him this morning, he was full of beans, with his mask on and socially distanced.

It was nice to see him.

I’m thrilled to see him because he is a lovely fella.

Having got to know him better now, he is a really good guy and lovely to have him back in.

The fact that is the reality of life that someone like him can be suffering with that.
