About Coventry City

Coventry City Football Club is a professional association football club based in Coventry, West Midlands, England. The team compete in the EFL Championship, the second tier of the English football league system. The club is nicknamed the Sky Blues because of the colour of their home strip. From 1899 to 2005, Coventry City played at Highfield Road. The 32,609-capacity Ricoh Arena was opened in August 2005 to replace Highfield Road. However, the club have left the Ricoh on two occasions and currently are groundsharing with Birmingham City at St Andrew's. Coventry contest M69 derby matches with local rivals Leicester City.

Coventry City formed as Singers F.C. in 1883 following a general meeting of the Singer Factory Gentleman's club. They adopted their current name in 1898 and joined the Southern League in 1908, before being elected into the Football League in 1919. Relegated in 1925, they returned to the Second Division as champions of the Third Division South and Third Division South Cup winners in 1935–36. Relegated in 1952, they won promotion in the inaugural Fourth Division season in 1958–59. Coventry reached the First Division after winning the Third Division title in 1963–64 and the Second Division title in 1966–67 under the management of Jimmy Hill. In the 1970–71 season, the team competed in the European Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, reaching the second round. Despite beating Bayern Munich 2–1 in the home leg, they had lost 6–1 in the first leg in Germany, and thus were eliminated.

Coventry's only period in the top division to date lasted 34 consecutive years between 1967 and 2001, and they were inaugural members of the Premier League in 1992. They won the FA Cup in 1987, the club's only major trophy, when they beat Tottenham Hotspur 3–2. They suffered further relegations in 2012 and 2017, though did manage to also win the EFL Trophy in 2017. Coventry returned to Wembley in 2018, beating Exeter City in the League Two play-off final. Manager Mark Robins built on this success and led the club to promotion back to the Championship as League One champions in 2020.

I would have been delighted with a draw before our present form started. A draw will be a good result with a tinge of disappointment though. We just need to avoid defeats atm.

Re: TEAM NEWS: " CARDIFF CITY v COVENTRY CITY " MATCH THREAD

Mick McCarthy:

Alex Smithies, went down inside the opening 10 minutes of the Robins clash owing to feeling unwell.

He missed the 2-1 triumph up at New York Stadium on Tuesday night, too, with Dillon Phillips taking his place between the sticks.

And McCarthy revealed the mystery problem knocked City's No.1 for six.

Mick McCarthy:

"Whatever it was, of all the times to get a virus that isn’t coronavirus, it completely wiped him out," McCarthy said of Smithies.

"He’s not available, he’s out. It really took it out of him.

"On the upside, Dillon was excellent. You don’t want players missing, but when you get players replacing them you want them to have a good performance and he did.

"There is only one slot as a goalkeeper and he was very good at both games. When he came on against Bristol, especially when they launched a free kick straight at him when he came on. He was very good the other night against a very tough opposition at Rotherham."

CCFC: :bluebird: :bluebird:

Jonny Williams and Alex Smithies will be unavailable again for this weekend's clash with Coventry City.

Williams sustained a training ground injury during his first week at the club and Mick McCarthy is hopeful this will be the last fixture he misses before stringing together a run of games until the end of the season.

Smithies, meanwhile, has still not fully recovered from a mystery illness which forced him off within 10 minutes against Bristol City last weekend. Dillon Phillips has deputised well, though, and will likely continue between the sticks.

There is some positive news, however, with Leandro Bacuna returning to the fold following his omission from the Rotherham win.

Jordi Osei-Tutu revealed on Instagram on Friday that he expects to be back in contention at the end of the month as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury.

Lee Tomlin is still working his way back to full fitness. He is expected back now in march.

Isaac Vassell remains a long-term absentee

Match facts:

Cardiff last hosted Coventry for a league match back in March 2012, a 2-2 draw in the Championship.

Coventry are looking for their first league double over Cardiff since the 1965/66 season.

Cardiff are unbeaten in all four of their Championship matches under Mick McCarthy so far, winning two and drawing two.

Coventry’s Callum O’Hare has three assists in his last four league appearances, as many as he managed in his first 53 league games for the Sky Blues.

Cardiff manager Mick McCarthy hasn’t faced Coventry in a league match since February 2009, losing 2-1 as Wolves manager in the Championship.

Given that we now have a new manager have not lost for four games have won the last two are playing the team in 19th place in the table who are badly hit by injuries and have a minus eleven goal difference and we are at home I would say anything other than a win would be very disappointing. We are not in the midst of a six game losing streak under Harris and should expect better now. We have a bit of momentum now and anything other than a win stops that.

First sight at goal for Cardiff as Wilson tees up Vaulks on the edge of the D. Hits it low and hard, but it's wide.

McCallum and Ng is already proving an interesting battle. Coventry man this time manages to get a cross away, but it's head clear by Nelson before Morrison mops up inside the box.
