'I'm like a kid!' Delighted Cardiff City boss Mick McCarthy revved up after Rotherham win as he reveals what made him 'sick'

The Bluebirds continued marching on their unbeaten run as they came away from Rotherham with a 2-1 win on Tuesday night

A gleeful Mick McCarthy could not hide his excitement after his Cardiff City side snatched all three points courtesy of a late winner from Joe Bennett.

The Bluebirds took the lead through Sheyi Ojo, but were pegged back on the hour after Rotherham's Matt Crooks converted to level the tie.

It looked as though both sides were going to come away with a share of the spoils, but Bennett's header ensured City's record now reads eight points from four games under the new manager.

BIG MICK McCARTHY:

And in his post-match press conference, McCarthy's infectious happiness was written all over his face. While trying to describe why the yellow ball was changed, he said it was because it was "as flat as a fart".

After laughing he said: "Did I say fart? I don't know. Look, I've just said it again.

"I'm like a kid now, aren't I?"

The truth is, he was delighted with the team's performance and he had every reason to be. In tough conditions, every man battled away and they deservedly come away with all the points.

He stressed, though, that he and his squad have to stay grounded, despite this quite clear new-manager bounce they are currently experiencing.

When McCarthy took charge, City were tentatively looking over their shoulder. Now, with two wins and two draws behind them, are they looking up at those top-six spots again?

"No, the first time we start thinking that then you slip up and they start catching you up again," he said.

"I just said to the lads, with the quality we have in the squad, we should be sneaking up behind those in front of us as opposed to looking behind us.

"I think they believe that. I think we showed a good bit of quality today.

"But, in this league, you are not allowed to show the quality unless you win the scrap first. You have to make sure you're not getting beaten, caught on the break.

"If you have to be purposeful, pragmatic, whatever word you want to put on it, just don't concede, because that's what we've done too often.

"I was sick for them [the players] today, that we didn't get a clean sheet. Because of all of the work they have put in. It's good by them, but it's poor by us."

Suddenly, with Cardiff now having played their game in hand, the Bluebirds have moved dramatically up to 11th place in the table. Something which looked a mile off just a few short weeks ago.

Clearly it is all beginning to move in the right direction for the Welsh outfit and the manager was the embodiment of that.

So much so, in fact, the three-and-a-half-hour trip back in the dead of night can't even put a dampener on this evening's result.

"I'm not bothered," McCarthy said, "I've got three points in my pocket."

Definitely warming to MM no doubt there will be some fans waiting for him to lose a game and start baying for a new manager...I would it if a top manager was attracted to our club or we took a gamble on a young ambitious manager who the fans would accept if HD went on losing streak...truth is we get people like Warnock or MM which is where we are as a club at the moment...it will take a few years to change things but maybe we can let MM build for the future and blood in a new manager in the future

MM seems to be a quiet unassuming manager with a dead pan, very dry sense of humour. Something I prefer to squeak squeak cockney car salesman pitch from the previous one.

MM has 10 plus years on Warnock so lets hope he has a few more magic years left in his daps

Have to admit I didn’t fancy MM for the job but happy he’s proving me wrong.

Honeymoon time is always the same with a new manager give it another 5 games and fans will want him out if we lose one or two of them that's how f*cking stupid modern football fans are tbh and social media, one week he's tip top and the next hes got to go. It's pathetic really what football fans have become

Think if we start getting some decent football played as a team gather the points think Mick will be a hit after such a poor few months for what ever reasons the players previously were just not performing
