Admira Wacker VS Cardiff City 92/93

Mon Feb 08, 2021 6:51 pm

Found these pics on FB. Me and my mate (our two flags).

Remember flying out from Stanstead early morning on a City special flight.Bit of trouble on the flight over meant we were met by police upon arrival in Vienna and stopped from entering the City.
Instead we were bussed to some shitty village ( one bar one restaurant) and kept there till an hour before kick off.
Think we lost 1-0 and drew the home game 1-1 (pike scoring if my memory serves me well).

Swapped shirts with their supporters. Flew back home same night pissed as hell spewing on the plane.

Eddie mays red jacket!!! :ayatollah: :occasion5:

Brilliant trip that, but very very expensive.

Took a girl with me in that away trip

Went to every European away trip with City in the 80’s & 90’s :ayatollah: :bluebird:
Incredible trips and miss them big time.

Loved that trip.....I think we did a 4 nighter. We flew into Vienna and promptly jumped on a train to Bratislava (now the capital of Slovakia). At the time it was one country called Czechoslovakia,

The beer was about 20p a pint, we went out one night with a steak dinner, drank as much as we could and I think the bill was about £8 a head....for the whole night, unreal!!! :occasion5:

We got the train back to Vienna on matchday and my biggest recall was as you crossed the border the difference in afluence was unreal. This was before the wall came down and it was like going into, or coming back from, a 3rd world country.

I swapped scarfs with a Wacker fan, circa 80 years old, and kept in touch with him until he sadly passed. He stated that we were the most vocal and friendly fans that he had ever seen in his 60 years of supporting his club. I remember their fans applauding us after the final whistle because we never stopped singing, even though we lost.

My last recall is a Bridgend boy called Lee Griffiths, a very close mate of mine, and I'm sure a few of you know the Big Man, otherwise known as The Chief. He came with us on the minibus to Heathrow and as we were leaving the M4 stated he didn't have a plane ticket!!!!!

We dropped him off at a roundabout not expecting to see him until we got back. Somehow he hitched a lift with a few Rhondda boys who went over on a ferry.........in a f*cking ambulance!! When we were in the bar at the end of the match the chant obviously went up........"You're going home in a fuckin ambulance".........happy days. :bluebird:

Remember it well as I was one of the 9 (or 10 on the way home) in the ambulance. Mainly lads from Cardiff. Lee was alight fingered guy if I remember well. Never seen anyone so adept at spotting security cameras. On arriving in Vienna we bumped into some City fans outside a bar. Asked if they knew a good place to stay. We booked a taxi to get there and were informed by the driver that people normally only booked in for half an hour! Anyway it was cheap and central so those of us not kipping in the ambulance booked 2 nights. On the first morning we were asked to leave so we did a runner and booked somewhere nicer for the 2nd night. Don't remember much about the game. One of the funniest things about the trip was trying to convince bemused travellers in a German Services that we were volunteer paramedics en route to Bosnia

Shame there are no more European trips with City

I went with a mate, we visited the beer festival in Munich first (met quite a few City fans there) and travelled by train to Austria. There was a little scuffle in Vienna City centre the evening before the game between a few City lads and a small group of local skinheads. One of the skinheads pulled out what looked like a flare-gun (it certainly didn't look like a standard pistol). The City lads scattered (understandably), but one of the Cardiff lot shouted out... "Don't run, it's ONLY a gun"! :laughing6:

I'd forgotten about that. We came out of the pub and this guy had a gun. Anyone sensible legged it but some City fans still chased them

Such a shame we haven't got the Welsh cup to compete in as route to Europe anymore
