' ALEX SMITHIES UPDATE '

Mon Feb 08, 2021 5:01 pm

Alex Smithies is hopefully in line to return on Tuesday evening after being forced off early due to illness in Cardiff City's clash with Bristol City on Saturday.

Monday 8th February 2021

Mick McCarthy: "We are very hopeful Alex will start at Rotherham, at worse in the squad for Tuesday night."

The sight of the goalkeeper leaving the field after 10 minutes was worrying, with Dillon Phillips having to replace him for the final 80 minutes of the match.

The situation flummoxed manager McCarthy, who after the match said:

"I've just been in to see him with the physio. He's sat up and we don't know if he's had an allergy or something.

"I don't think so. They all had the pre-match meal and it was all the same stuff. I doubt that very much.

"He looked very ill at the time. He was brought off on a stretcher. That looked worrying. But I've been to see him and he seems OK. So I've no idea. But he was quite ill at the time."

Asked specifically what was wrong with the former Queens Park Rangers keeper, McCarthy continued: "I've told you. I don't know.

"He was sick."

It all appears, though, it was not as worrying as many first feared and he is likely in contention for the No.1 spot against Rotherham on Tuesday evening.

Great to hear it wasn't serious and he will be back for Tuesday :ayatollah:

Credit to Dillon Phillips replacing him on Saturday and we now appear to have two safe pairs of hands again

Good news :thumbright:

Although if he doesn't quite make it, then Phillips is a good goalkeeper and will be a reliable deputy.

Hope nothing serious and cross fingers he is fully recovered. With an allergy it doesn’t matter if they’ve all eaten the same stuff - a person can react to anything where others don’t. So it’s possible that he had a reaction as you can literally react to anything. I had wondered about long covid as that causes some horrible symptoms - inability to cope with stress, regulate body temperature and dizzyness just to name some. Not sure if he’s had covid though but it can develop even if you have mild symptoms - the result is a long term illness similar to ME/CFS which is a serious complex illness involving all body systems however all tests and examinations often return negative. Obviously hopefully it’s not that but it’s just as he went unwell with no explained cause that was what I thought of first. Long covid can cause mild-severe symptoms. Mild being people are able to work or exercise but suffer some weird symptoms like dizzyness or racing heart. Severe being almost bedbpund.Cross fingers it’s nothing like that and was just one of those things and he’s as right as rain now.
