100% want Wales to win, would want them to win at tiddlywinks.

I get that some people don't like Rugby but wanting your country to get beat in anything is completely alien to me

Re: I’m interested

I want Wales to win everything but rugby.

Really really can’t stand the egg.

Growing up in the 70’s the majority of them disliked Cardiff City and laughed at us.

Also after working the pubs for their games over 25 yrs, complete idiots and get away with murder , they call it fun.

The eggs allowed to urinate in the streets on the terraces of the Arms Park, strip naked up and down St.Mary Street, acting like complete morons in the pubs and trains and called fun, never put in the papers , always labelled as fun. Police turned a blind eye.
I personally had more damage in my pubs after the egg than football.

Those that were around in the 70’s will find that the majority of Cardiff fans disliked the egg.

Football also became banned in the majority of schools in Wales in the 70’s.

For me it's Wales all the way, be it football, rugby, netball, etc :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:
Been to 6 nations games, RWC games, Cardiff Blues etc for years. It's a completely different atmosphere to football but still a very enjoyable one.

I've never quite got the football v rugby mindset, maybe it's more of a generational thing? We played both sports in my school, both teams were well regarded and respected, me and mates went to football and rugby games alike, the football and rugby fans usually overlapped quite a lot. An "us v them" mentality never really seemed to develop outside of casual banter.

I want Wales to win because I have a friend on FB who is Irish and she support anyone but Wales. I call her the Confused Celt. She swamps her FB and mine when Ireland beats Wales. So today I want a Welsh win.

ive never got the anti football thing with them either..youd swear football is some minority sport looking at our media, and its gone on over such a long period of time and to such an extent its difficult to imagine its not deliberate ?

Exactly this... on the topic of the game, our back row looks so much more athletic with Faletau playing.

If your born in Wales,or you would class yourself as a Welshman, why would want them to lose at anything, never mind just in sport?personal choice but don’t understand why you’d want your own country to lose, irrelevant if you like the sport your watching, find it embarrassing

Re: “ I’m interested “

I like wales to win every game whatever the sport but rugby fans infuriate me as the majority only come out the woodwork during world cups and 6 nations and the media ho totally overboard. Bet loadswho wouldnormally be totally pissed I the city centre wont even bother watching today.

Again I wonder if this is a generational thing? Swansea were consistently averaging nothing more than 5k crowds between 82 and 2004 and it's the same thing with Cardiff. Between 1972 and 2002 Cardiff didn't have a single season above 10k average crowds, most of the 80's and 90's were below 5k. However the 60's and 70's were some of the strongest performances Wales had in rugby. Before the move to regional teams in Rugby as well in 2001 there was a lot more representation for individual cities and towns. Neath, Bridgend, Ponty etc all had teams which now have since disappeared and been combined into 4 main teams in the 4 main cities.
In recent decades however both football and the consumption of media have changed massively, Swansea would easily have gotten crowds in the region of 25k-30k in the PL, we've been getting crowds of 20k+ for a decade now. Most PL games sold out at 33k. The national team has also seen massive success in recent years compared to decades of failures previously.

Despite the amount of people on here who can say they went to Rochdale on a cold winters night in the 80's, the fanbase for Welsh football is relatively young and modern.

I assume you mean specifically Welsh media in particular like TV and papers? The majority of people who consume both are the older generations and football in Wales back in the 70's-2000's wasn't exactly popular. The large target audience who get their sports news from TV and newspapers are just less interested in football than rugby I would imagine. With limited airtime and limited print space you have to prioritise what your audience want.

Nowadays you can get rugby and football scores at the push of a button or a few quick taps on a phone screen, something the younger generations are much more likely to do. Online media is also much less localised than TV and papers, I can get results from Scotland, France, Spain, Germany, etc all on the same page as Cardiff City results.

I am interested in rugby as much as the "red wall" newbies we somehow collected are in the Wales football time nowadays.

Its an occasion and that's it. Instead of a daft daffodil hat its a bucket hat.

Pivac is like Harris. He has got a job he is not qualified for....

wasnt exactly popular...waw
i honestly think that statement is the best example of media brainwashing on this topic ive seen....
attendances were poor with our clubs in the lower leagues ... doesnt mean football was not popular.........

Brainwashing  Liverpool and Man Utd may have been popular but Welsh football wasn't. Surprisingly Welsh media focuses on Welsh sports. For a long time rugby was the more popular sport, international rugby is still arguably more popular.

Cardiff and Swansea spent decades with crowds less than 10k. In the 70's the national team was pulling in ~10k maybe ~15k for most games except England. In the 80's it improved slightly but was fairly consistently 15k-20k. In the 90's again it was only really 15k-20k at most international games, sometimes a lot lower.
The first big crowds for the national team returned in the early 2000's where Wales were consistently getting crowds above 60k between 2000 and 2005. Lack of success and interest meant it dipped but if we weren't in the CCS I imagine for at least the last 5 years most games would've been 40k-50k with larger crowds for the more important games (Ireland 2017 and Belgium 2015).

Cardiff and Swansea were getting crowds a 5th the size of what they do now during the 80's and 90's and the Welsh national team was failing to qualify for anything and would struggle getting crowds higher than 10k-15k. Meanwhile the late 60's through to early 80's are considered one of the Golden Ages of Welsh Rugby. Welsh TV and Welsh newspapers had and still have an audience with whom Rugby is very much the dominant sport. International Rugby is still easily more popular than football, the fact WRU can sell out a 6 nations game at the MillStad when tickets are 80 quid a pop proves this, Cardiff attendances noticeably dip when the rugby clashes with a home game.

Welsh media such as TV and Newspapers prioritises Rugby because that's where their audience is, if you go online however it's common to see women's football or Scottish football take priority over Rugby Union.

It is Wales to win everything for me, don't care what it is, I have often noticed, that the ones who want to complain about the number of Man Utd or Liverpool shirts worn in Cardiff, are the same ones who want the Wales rugby team to lose

Re: “ I’m interested “

Same reasons as Annis, being a footballer FORCED to play rugby throughout comp
school, will live with me forever. Some really good players got away our generation
because of that. Why should any young child experence that in school?

afterwards again like Annis working in the clubs & pubs experiencing some really
horrendous behaviour. All swept under carpets because .."It's the rugby"

Hate the game with a passion

Egg was compulsory in our school and football was nowhere to be seen in 70s. Hate egg with a passion - wouldn't walk accross the road to watch it with a free ticket. :banghead:

Gents as a landlord of a Pub in the Cardiff City centre, I was given 4 free tickets to every Wales egg game, i never went once, they hated us and we hated them.

Its mostly new City fans in the last 20 yrs who like both sports.

The egg was forced on me in school and football banned.

Glad to see there are others on here backing up how badly we were treated.

The Council never supported City either, always let us down.

Once Sam came in, suddenly everyone loved Cardiff City.
