About Rotherham United

Rotherham United Football Club, nicknamed The Millers, is a professional association football club based in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England. The team compete in the EFL Championship, the second tier of the English football league system, following their promotion from League One in the 2019–20 season.

Founded in 1925 as a merger between Rotherham County (1877) and Rotherham Town (1899), the club's colours were initially yellow and black, but changed to the red and white around 1930. Rotherham United play their home games at New York Stadium, a 12,021 capacity all-seater stadium, having previously played since its foundation at Millmoor for 101 years. Joining the Football League back in 1925, Rotherham spent the first 25 years of their time in the Third Division North, the lowest level of the Football League, finally gaining promotion to the Second Division at the end of the 1950–51 season.

The Millers featured in the inaugural League Cup final in 1961, won the 1996 Football League Trophy and the 1946 Football League North Cup. They also achieved two separate back to back promotions in 1999–2001 under Ronnie Moore and 2012–2014 under Steve Evans.

This is a big game for us, so nothing other than 3 points will really suffice; a draw keeps the gap but a defeat would be very worrying...

Looking forward to the game though and although I rarely predict, I am hopeful this team will 'do the biz...' :ayatollah:

Damn cold up here. That cold that bites you. There is some advantage about not being allowed to go.

With 13 points having been recorded from a possible 18, it is clear that Paul Warne and his players have taken full advantage, with the Millers putting together the third-best return in the division over that period.

Although Saturday's 2-1 victory at Preston North End has only moved Rotherham one point clear of the drop zone, the Yorkshire side continue to make significant steps in the right direction.

Rotherham have now scored second-half goals in their last nine outings, a further indication that this group of players are playing with a freshness not present at many of their rivals.

Ahead of successive home fixtures against opponents whom they will consider to be rivals, that could prove important over the next seven days.

Cardiff have been left with a similar scenario as recently-appointed manager Mick McCarthy looks to build on an unbeaten start with the Bluebirds.

The Welsh side have collected five points from three matches ahead of a quartet of fixtures versus teams who are no higher than 11th place in the standings.

On the back of eight matches without success, Cardiff ended their wait for a win against Bristol City at the weekend, prevailing by a 2-0 scoreline at Ashton Gate.Kieffer Moore has scored in his last three matches, taking his total for the season to 11 strikes from 23 appearances in the second tier.

What's the latest team news?

Alex Smithies is in line to return after being forced off early due to illness in Cardiff City's clash with Bristol City on Saturday.

The sight of the goalkeeper leaving the field after 10 minutes was worrying, however it is thought he will be in contention for the clash with Rotherham on Tuesday.

New signing Jonny Williams is a doubt for the game, having missed the win over the Robins after picking up a training-ground knock on the eve of the game.

"Typical Jonny," McCarthy said at Ashton gate on Saturday. "He gets clattered in training. It was a bang on the back of his knee. I don't think it'll be long.

"Maybe next week."

Jordi Osei-Tutu is still absent, with no return date yet pertaining to his hamstring injury. Lee Tomlin is still a couple of weeks away as he continues to recover from his groin surgery.

Isaac Vassell is still a long-term absentee.

Rotherham:

For the Millers, the main injury concern is Jamie Lindsay, who was hauled off in the win over Preston last weekend.

Lindsay was due for a scan on Monday ahead of the clash, so it is unlikely he will feature.

Match facts

This is the first league meeting between Rotherham and Cardiff since February 2017, with the Bluebirds winning 5-0 under Neil
Warnock at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Cardiff City’s last away league game against Rotherham was back in 2016/17, a 2-1 win. They have never won back-to-back away games against the Millers.

Since the turn of the year, no Championship side has won more points than Rotherham United (13).

Cardiff are looking to win consecutive away league games without conceding for the first time since February 2020.

The last time Cardiff boss Mick McCarthy faced Rotherham was in the 2016/17 season with Ipswich – the Tractor Boys were the only Championship side who didn’t register a win over the Millers that season (D1 L1).

I've been many times to The New York stadium where we have won all but one game.

That lose was very cruel on us. David Marshall got sent off and we played with 10 men for most of the game. The score was 1-1 as we went into the last minute of the game. They scored a deflected goal where the ball trickled over the line in front of us. We could all see it going in but none of the players seem to react to it. It was painful for is to watch, very painful.

Snowing in Rotherham apparently.
Someone on their forum reckons it needs to stop soon for game to go ahead. Everyone’s a groundsman eh but disappointing if it is called off.
