BIG MICK: ITS NOT FOR OUR YOUNG ONES THIS RELEGATION BATTLE

MICK McCARTHY:

'Youngsters need to come into a winning environment'

Do you actually foresee minutes on the pitch for these young academy lads?

Mick McCarthy:"Not in the next couple of weeks, I don’t.

"I’ve just been asked if I’m in a relegation scrap, I said no and I don’t want to be in one.

"Well, you know full well the experienced ones are going to be the ones to get us back at it and to where we want to be, looking upwards and not behind us.

"That’s not for the young ones. That doesn’t do the team any good and it doesn’t do them any good.

"I cant bring youngsters regular now until we get to winning ways."

"They need to come into a winning environment with the team full of confidence. That helps them."

"Once we are safe from relegation, then we can start looking at our youngsters at the the club."

Ciaron Brown update

How has Ciaron Brown been and is he in contention for Saturday?

Mick McCarthy: "He’s trained really well.

"He will be travelling with the squad.

"He has come back and that was his wish anyway. He is out of contract and the club has an option on him.

"But if he wants to come back and show me what he can do while I’m here and show that he wants to be here next year, I admire him for that.

"I’ve never promised to play him but he wants to train and show what he can do."

Bit confussed which does'nt take much with me about what M mcCARDIFF is saying on the one hand he wants youngsters on the bench
but then does' nt think they should be thrown into the mix
if we stick with pack flint and vaulks till the end of the season instead of throwing in the youngsters nothung will change i am afraid
just look how swans have played the young players.

I think it is a case of managers know the fans would like to see youth team players make it through to the first team but are essentially very cautious and don't really want to play them even as late substitutes. Having nine subs on the bench gives them a PR opportunity to put them on the bench and pretend they are being brought through to the first team when they are not. At least McCarthy is being honest about it. I actually doubt that he would play any if we weren't in a relegation fight as the excuse would then be we have an outside chance of the playoffs.

Not sure we wouldn't be better off letting Cowill and Issack Davies go on loan to the likes of Wrexham and Newport rather than let them stagnate in the under 23s. At some point they are going to learn nothing being in the under 23s and need a bit of league football even if it's a couple of divisions down the league.

did my head in when Harris arrived and within a couple of days starts going on about the academy and pathways....absolute bullshit...you cant just arrive and jump to the conclusion the academy is full of championship level talent , that the previous manager { who has a much much better record for playing youth than you yourself do } has been ignoring...would take weeks if not months to assess properly not 2 or 3 days... well MM came and spat out the same goobldygook obviously told to , to pacify the constant moans.....id love a team full of our kids....but i do not want a single kid given a go where the manager thinks he is not good enough.. and indeed Swansea did play ONE last night...

Very good management in my view we all shout about our youngsters being used but in fairness they come on make a mistake and we are fighting at the mower end of the league supporters get on their back they have to be protected.

This club supporters and on this forum have slated Mick Harris at times a player who is doing well and the worst I have ever seen was Ben Wilson a very young keeper coming on well then he got pushed in the deep end and had a nightmare poor kid but he was crucified on here his confidence was ruined and it was not all his fault.

So great management by Mick if we come safe from relegation and cannot chase top 6 then play them with nothing to lose

I tend to agree,at present we aren't "safe" so to bring on the kids now, could have a detrimental effect on them, maybe when safety has been achieved MM might give a couple a bit of game time, when its safer to do so?
But lets wait and see, before lobbing bricks the managers way.
