' Cardiff City player now left permanently '

Fri Feb 05, 2021 10:44 am

Greg Cunningham is no longer a Cardiff player, he has signed permanently for Championship club Preston .

Originally it was on loan, but its been changed to permanently and Greg Cunningham is no longer listed as being ‘in on loan’at Preston.
Preston had gone over their amount of loan players.

Apparently Cardiff City have agreed to pay part of his contract of which ran to the end of this season.

The CCFC Committee signed Cunningham and also have released Cunningham less than 3yrs later.

Cunningham made 12 appearances for Cardiff City in 3 years.

Cardiff City paid £4mill for Greg Cunningham and he has left on a free transfer back to Preston who Cardiff City paid them £4mill.

Cardiff City on 13 June 2018 signed Greg Cunningham from Preston £4 million signing a three-year contract.

Cunningham's basic wage was apparently £18,000 a week as Cardiff City headed towards the Premier League.

Cardiff City paid £4mill for Greg Cunningham and he has left on a free transfer.

The City must have been desperate to get rid. Pity we couldn’t have received a small fee - even if only £50k - given we supposedly paid £4m for him.

I agree but wages off books were priority imo as id imagine he was on a good whack

City clearing the decks, i can understand, but we are in a relegation battle, should be in June, not now

When you look back it - what a complete and utter waste of 4 million pounds plus his wages.
Did nothing for us on the pitch worthy of any note.
Got crocked when on loan
Came back - hardly play (did he get injured again?)
Now gone on a free. He's laughing all the way to the bank at our expense knowing full well he will never be poor on the money he's had off us.
He probably do great at preston now

This pretty much sums up our transfer business. Its no surprise we are in so much debt when a lot of our transfers end up leaving for nothing or even having contracts paid up.

Whistler as said on here overseen by the committee and mistakes are made by managers, yet to be fair to Warnock he won promotion, saved us from relegation and brought in over 200million.
The Committee have let this current squad go down to its bare bones and a relegation fight is now on our hands through them, no one else.

Some of warnocks signings have been
expensive mistakes , just goes to show that signing players for large amounts is a lottery but if the club didn't sign them people would say they are not backing the manager

In all fairness to Cunningham, he was a good pundit for Cardiff City TV. Came across as knowledgeable and desperate to see the City do well.

mate, been a lot said about not having RB cover on here this season ..so your going to the prem , do you buy a 2nd left back or just pop into corals on Saturday morning to see who is left handed and looks semi fit.. people really need to look at who other clubs sign...and how much use they were..

Re: ' Cardiff City player now left permanently '

I think at the time we signed Greg Cunningham we only really had Joe Bennett for the LB position, OK we had Jazz Richards who could play there but was never fit, so NW was looking to get cover and asked the club to sign Cunningham. It would have been madness to go into a PL season with only one left back so Cunningham at £4m isn't really that bad a deal.

OK he wasn't able to force his way into the team because of the form of Joe Bennett and his contract has run down and given the financial position of clubs in this pandemic it hasn't been possible to sell him.

That's football you win some and lose some but NW also needed a second keeper and Smithies hasn't been such a bad signing, or Bacuna. He spent big on Bobby Reid but got our money back+ Josh Murphy well with a year left this summer that's a big loss looming.

Cunningham looks a poor signing on the face of it but we needed a LB and overall NW did us proud with the PL income plus parachute payments.

Its not just cunningham though. We consistently seem to lose a lot of money on players. How much we going to get back on Flint, pack and vassel? Plus cunningham, thats around £15mill there that we havnt seen much from our investment and we wont get much of it back. Its been happening for years.

I understand you're not going to get money back on every player but we never seem to make money on players. Zohore is the only player we have made a decent sum on. It is not sustainable and is why we are in debt. Now we are in a position where we have a weak, 1 dimensional squad where there isn't much money available to strengthen. The club have pissed away so much money on poor players.

I accept that but we are not the only club to lose money of players not having a go at the Jacks but back in 2017 the paid £12m for Bony and released him 2 years later, the same goes with Olsson signed for £4m and released, or Baston signed for £15.5m free transfer to Villa. That's over £30m and nothing when the players leave.

Not having a go at the Jacks it just happens to clubs chasing the PL dream if you stay the TV money keeps you going but get relegated and you can lose a lot of money. Your right about Flint, Pack and Vassell but in normal times we could get money for Flint and Pack, how much probably not what we paid.

indeed... Swansea had players they had paid 60 plus million pounds for of no use to them so out on loan in their relegation year... Huddersfield sold Kongolo for 4 mill 3 months ago taking a 14 million pound hit and the list goes on.... its always happened at all clubs, always will...in our case the players most called wastes reached the play offs and are mostly still being picked 2 managers down the line...
