:bluebird: :bluebird: :bluebird: “ MICK McCARTHY UPDATES CARDIFF CITY FANS ON FRIDAY “ :bluebird: :bluebird:

Friday 5th February 2021

MICK McCARTHY:

"Playing the younger ones now,No,"

"That’s not for the young ones now. That doesn’t do the team any good and it doesn’t do them any good."

"We will bring the youngsters through once we are not in a relegation battle anymore."

Mick McCarthy says Jonny Williams is a doubt for tomorrow after getting "clubbed" on the back of the knee in training.

Injury update

Are any other players an injury concern?

Mick McCarthy: "Max Watters has trained and Junior Hoilett has trained. They have all trained.

"We can add them to the numbers available."

Jonny Williams 50/50 slight injury.

MICK McCARTHY:

Mick, were you in bed early on deadline day as you said?

Mick McCarthy:"I wasn’t up at 12 trying to do deals, because they weren’t around!

"We monitored it all through the day and there was nothing going on."

Jonny's injury issues

Are there some injury problems with Jonny?

Mick McCarthy: "He did with us at Ipswich, he dislocated his shoulder twice. He has had a kick today in training!

"He is robust in how he plays, but he just gets real bad kicks, bad knocks. He protects the ball, dribbles and people take it out on him.

"He did his shoulder, his ankle.

"They weren't little niggles, they were bad tackles. He got bundled into the hoardings on the side of the pitch."

Mick: 'I hope Jonny Williams will be a great signing'

Why do you keep signing Jonny?

Mick McCarthy:"I’d have signed him permanently at Ipswich if I could. He was amazing there with us and he has been fabulous with Wales.

"It was just an opportunity to have a good player, I thought. Out of contract this summer.

"I hope he will be a great signing for the club."

Williams to be assessed on Saturday before Bristol clash

Is Jonny Williams a doubt to face Bristol City on Saturday?

Jonny Williams brings 'energy, invention and creativity'

Why do you keep signing Jonny?

Mick McCarthy:"I’d have signed him permanently at Ipswich if I could. He was amazing there with us and he has been fabulous with Wales.

"It was just an opportunity to have a good player, I thought. Out of contract this summer.

"I hope he will be a great signing for the club."

Maybe a good signing permanently?

"It is a permanent signing. The fact he plays with Kieffer and Harry Wilson (with Wales), I think it’s a good deal."

What does he bring?

"Energy, invention, creativity. That little bit of something special, he can find a pass and is always looking to create. He can drive you up the pitch and dribble.

"He gets a lot of kicks. He brings a smile about the place, a lovely kid."

'Gap from beneath is closing'

The gap has narrowed to teams below you?

Mick McCarthy: "Vitally important.

"We had our opportunities to win the game against Millwall, we had more chances, more possession and shots at goal.

"It’s important because the gap from beneath is closing."

McCarthy: 'I don't want to be in a relegation scrap'

Relegation scrap?

Mick McCarthy: "No. And I don’t want to be in one. We need to start getting wins."

Are you confident for the rest of the season, have you bedded in your ideas this week?

"Yes it’s been better this week.

"We have had time to work on a number of things.

"Yes I am confident with the players we’ve got. We’ve got a good squad of players.

"I’m sure we can start getting results."

McCarthy addresses Robert Glatzel exit

Glatzel went out on loan, did you look for a replacement?

Mick McCarthy:"Yeah we did.

"We had a few pending loans that were looking like we could get one of them, then they didn’t happen. It just didn’t happen.

"In the end, if that’s the case, Mark Harris has got to play, Max Watters has got to play.

"We had Rubin in the squad as well, who is not an out and out striker, but can drop in the No.10.

"We play the players we have and some of the youngsters."

No thought of Glatzel staying?

"Not really, no. He needed a move to go and find himself, re-energise himself. Get back playing, get back scoring goals.

"I hadn’t seen that here with us.

"Max Watters, Mark Harris, I’ll play them."

A lot of responsibility for them?

"Yeah it is. But I’m quite happy to play them."

Kieffer Moore becoming 'talisman'

Is Kieffer Moore becoming a talisman?

Mick McCarthy: "Yes. I hope he maintains that.

"We’ve not replaced Robert, Kieffer is a big part of our team. I’m not setting him any targets.

"He’s been great.

"Talisman is the right word. I think TC will get a bit more out of him as well.

"I signed him for Ipswich for £20,000. He was really raw. We saw him play for Yeovil against us and we were impressed with him. We wanted a mobile, big striker.

"He wasn’t ready for the Championship then but he has just got better and better and has improved himself to no end."

'Nice to have Welsh players in'

You've got a nice selection of Wales players now…

Mick McCarthy: "It’s great.

McCarthy looks ahead to Severnside derby

Severnside derby…

Mick McCarthy:"I went to watch them against Brentford. They started well and made a good fist of it.

"Brentford managed to pick a hole in them.

"It looked like Brentford were going to win and they did. They have got a lot of injury problems themselves."

A feast or famine team?

"It’s not a bad way to go. It’s better than drawing games!

"They’ve got some good players. They are a good team."

Signing a free agent striker 'unlikely'

Do you have any thoughts on signing a free agent striker?

Mick McCarthy: "It is pretty unlikely. But if there was someone who was available who ticked all the boxes… well I say that, but if they did tick all the boxes they wouldn’t be available, would they?

"But if there was someone, because we are still a bit light, then we would consider it, yes.

"But I still believe we have the players we’ve got, including Max Watters, Mark Harris, Rubin, Isaak, whoever, the lads below have got to have the games."

'Youngsters need to come into a winning environment'

Do you actually foresee minutes on the pitch for these young academy lads?

Mick McCarthy:"Not in the next couple of weeks, I don’t.

"I’ve just been asked if I’m in a relegation scrap, I said no and I don’t want to be in one.

"Well, you know full well the experienced ones are going to be the ones to get us back at it and to where we want to be, looking upwards and not behind us.

"That’s not for the young ones. That doesn’t do the team any good and it doesn’t do them any good.

"They need to come into a winning environment with the team full of confidence. That helps them."

'Couldn't coach Jonny to do things he does with the ball'

Jonny Williams has spoken about how you made him believe in himself, what have you done differently compared to other managers?

Mick McCarthy: "You’d have to ask him.

"I’m just me with him. I treat him like a human being, first and foremost. They are all human beings first and footballers second.

"We used to encourage him to do all the things he tried to do and the creativity he has, let him run free a little bit.

"I just really encourage him. I put my arm around him and encourage him to do it as he does it.

"I couldn’t coach him to do the things he does with the ball.

"He came and he was a breath of fresh air at Ipswich and maybe he enjoyed the relationship he had with me, TC and everyone at Ipswich.

"He played so well for us, it was devastating when he got injured and when he had to go back when he got fit."

'Next month can have big impact on season'

Bristol, Rotherham then Coventry, it's a mad month which could decide the season...

Mick McCarthy:"It is. It will have a big impact on it that’s for sure.

"Teams who are closer to us at the bottom are coming up. We want to get something out of this game first and foremost.

"It’s a big couple of weeks for us, certainly."

'If I get the squad firing we should be looking up'

Looking dangerous coming out of the transfer window?

Mick McCarthy:"Yes. We freshened it up and ended up with a new manager and one new player!

"That’s true, though, teams can improve considerably. Derby for instance have got five or six on loan.

"Neil at Middlesbrough took a load of players on loan.

"We have got a good squad and if I get them firing we should be looking up."

'Tom Sands could get a chance at right-back'

You spoke about a right back, why didn’t you sign one?

Mick McCarthy: "I’m not sure I spoke about strengthening, that’s just the one position where we don’t have two players.

"Tom Sang has been training at right back or right wing back and I would give him a chance, that’s what you’ve got to do.

"It’s certainly not Leandro Bacuna, because that doesn’t help him or us, him playing at right back.

"Tom has done really well in training, I’m pleased with him."

"He will be travelling with the squad.

"He has come back and that was his wish anyway. He is out of contract and the club has an option on him.

"But if he wants to come back and show me what he can do while I’m here and show that he wants to be here next year, I admire him for that.
