why own a football club?

Wed Feb 03, 2021 7:58 am

Seems even in a pandemic there are a considerable amount of people out there willing to buy football clubs.what's in it for them ? .surely they lose money?.

What is money ?

To the like of us, a grand or two makes a difference. When you become middle class you talk in £100k's,

A steak and a beer may cost us £40, to rich folk its £400 what difference to your real day to day life does uber money have. You have a big house £25 million, private jets £3 million, a fleet of cars for £1 million, live in staff £250K.
What are you going to do with that other £900 million?

Life is about experiences, to a few, a private box isn't enough, I reckon i could do a good job here and there you have it you are the owner of a championship football club, or a string of racehorses, a cycling team

Ego is a big driver

That must be it .because surely it would be virtually impossible to make a profit?.

Owners fall in love with their club. They are on a different level to us. Where we would give our last penny to our sons and daughters, club owners don't have that problem. They search for something else to fall in love with and a football club can be a great thing to love where you stand the chance to be loved yourself by thousands.

There's that old saying that the quickest way to become a millionaire is to start off as a billionaire and then buy a football club.

Fans will always turn on the owners when things fall apart. Tan managed to upset quite a few of us before it started all going wrong. quite an achievement if you ask me.

Not all of us hate him though! Most of us will never forget his despicable decision over the colour change, and rightly so,but some forgive him, others will never forgive him, even if he took us to the top of the premier league,a shame, but that's people's perogatives I guess.
In essence the post above says it all,we become a plaything for most owners,I think very few actually "fall in love" unless they are local people, with exceptions of course, where outside interests have fallen in love with their club (Leicester City etc).

And according to some posters, tan isn't in love with his club anyway.I don't know the man to judge his passion for us either way tbf. :old: :bluebird:

i think fans fall in love with clubs... owners ? Burnley have just been taken over ,but the group buying them had looked at other clubs...Sam had Wimbledon then came here . Abramovich was interested in Spurs.. our own owner has been involved in multiple clubs.. and Mike Ashley is a Spurs fan .to name just a few... dont understand it, never have... its not as if they are little gold mines.. and invariably the fans will at best be suspicious of you ..

Yeah. even if one of us became a Billionaire and bought Tan out we would still get the suspicions thrown at us.

If I became a billionaire and bought the club I would get rid of all lingering rebrand stuff overnight, look at bring in the likes of Bellamy and Ramsey and I was still be accused of being negative by my admirers.

very few owners are appreciated mate... Jack Walkers daughter got slaughtered for selling Blackburn even after her father had bought a mid table championship team a league title and 18 prem years...i wonder if he would have done the same knowing his daughter would be slagged off 20 years later ? . and some Wimbledon fans { ironically probably not even fans when they wre non /lower leagues } ... knock sam after all those prem years and an FA cup...
