A forum for all things Cardiff City

Cardiff City are being linked with a move for Charlton and Wales midfielder Jonny Williams.
The BBC and the Sun report that Mick McCarthy is keen to bring the 27-year-old to Cardiff City Stadium ahead of the transfer window deadline, which shuts on Monday at 11pm.
Williams would be McCarthy's first deal of his Cardiff tenure, and has signed the Wales international twice before, both times on loan, while at Ipswich Town.
The former Sunderland man is out of contract this summer, with the BBC adding that a deal could be wrapped up for as little as £200,000 and that the Bluebirds are 'in talks' to get it done.

It’s in the bag by the sound of it and maybe 2 further additions RB and Striker.
Sun Jan 31, 2021 2:25 pm
If true, he will bring some much needed energy to our midfield - if he can stay fit...
Sun Jan 31, 2021 2:33 pm
Rather another midfielder or a winger who can actually beat a fullback on the outside.
Sun Jan 31, 2021 2:36 pm
Hasnt he got a terrible injury record?
Sun Jan 31, 2021 2:53 pm
Take away the fact he's Welsh and we know him and I'm pretty sure 98% of people on here would be ripping the club for this signing if it happens
The facts are hes a bit part player for a team in league 1. Has a awful injury record, his scoring and assist stats are poor even in a lower league and has failed in his previous attempts at the higher level.
He plays a attacking midfield role so would be in contention with Wilson and Tomlin for a starting place and he is nowhere near those two in terms of talent, experiance and quality
The signing makes no sense if it were to happen.

Wilson will be gone at the end of the season and Tomlin has had his best days and will be out more than he’s in.

As a Wales international he has always been immense but as a club player he has had numerous injuries and inconsistenciy. Another Ojo in the books. It amazes me if we sign him that the club is contuning with zero forward planning. McCarthy goes in the summer and a new manager will look at Williams as a bit part squad player.
Sun Jan 31, 2021 2:57 pm
Well if Mr McCarthy is happy with him then he has fully got my support.
Sun Jan 31, 2021 3:01 pm
Sorry, but for me he is too injury prone and how many walking wounded have we signed in the past? Cunningham, Vassells etc etc.
A fine Championship and even lower premier league player when fit though.

Played 23 games this season means he's injury prone? Hes got 3 good years in him at least Wilson may go back if he signs but certainly looking at next season ! The whole side needs remodeling so like say wilson out if signs would make sense with Tomlin back as well.

yes he does.. but his record when not injured is far from impressive and currently is a bit part player in league 1...7 starts this season...

So replace them in the summer with a better player

i think the same...if this was a loan , fair enough but paying money that will then involve probably a couple of tears contract...why ?

We are not braking any transfer fee and plain and simple
if he stays fit there is no competition between him and vaulks plus we can get rid of that telegraphed bloody throw in
Sun Jan 31, 2021 4:13 pm
I don't mind talent from lower division clubs as long as they can get into the team of the lower division club and are the best player at the club eg Ng. But when the player is a bit part player at that club and is injury prone to boot that is a different matter. Imagine Vassell and Williams running at opposition defences bacause you won't actually see them do it.

well id love to know how you disguise a long throw but there were not too many of those yesterday.... and Will has scored more goals for us than jonny has scored in a ten year career...

He's exactly the opposite of what we have now - energetic, can run with the ball at his feet. Offers something different. McCarthy#s had barely a week to assess the squad, plus prepare for 2 league matches. It's a short term addition to give us something different. The Club really needs to stay in this division.

This transfer hardly gets the blood pumping.

not fussed about how many goals he's a midfielder engine room creator everything vauks is' nt chipping in with the odd goal does'nt cement a place in any midfield my mother could probably knock one or to in a season a deflection off her stick etc as she is 86
Sun Jan 31, 2021 4:47 pm
He’s clearly coming as support. With that said I’d much rather Mick look at the Academy and bring someone in.
What’s the worst that could happen with this signing?
Plus if Mick is short term why would the board give him a few million for a player??

Should pass her name on to our committee. Few million on the way.

Yes he is that you are correct
BUT he's a league 1 quality engine room creator . And be struggles to get a game at that level.
Why don't we just sign Joe bloggs from the league of Wales because he has a style we need. Wether he's good enough or not doesn't seem to matter. Makes sense.

Relegation due to too many lower league quality players in the squad ?

As far as I can see his main value will be making run in the vicinity of the opposition penalty area being fouled ans hoping Wilson can bang in the resulting free kick or if it's too the side of the penalty area hoping one of big lumps can head in the free kick. Aren't one or two of our supposedly better youth team players like this Mayembe or The Davies bloke who was on the subs bench.
I have a suspicion that Mick is trying to make us play like the Ipswich team that he kept in the championship maybe he is trying to assemble that team here.

Not the standard most on here would expect, but definitely a realistic signing for a club in our position in the table.
Would offer us something different but his injury record would be a worry.
Wouldn't be a costly signing though, so possibly worth the risk.
The manager knows him which is a plus.
Hopefully the fans will give him a chance to impress, but this is our fans we're talking about.

If it was just him I would not be worried. What worries me is the fact we are packing our squad with lower league players and kids .
We could feasibly have a team on the pitch next week consisting of 6 players who have recently come from the lower leagues or development
Nelson, NG, Watters, Williams, Bagan, Glatzel
That is poor for a team supposed to be going for promotion. It's all well and good trying a player to see if he can make a step up but when you end up with 6 you weaken the squad so much it takes a long time to get it back

Maybe weve signed in as a replacement for Isacc Vassell , we are in need of someone to cover for the position of sick note, Isacc is nearly fit now after 2 years injured. If he comes in he'll probably go straight on the treatment table ahead of Vassell.
Having said that we know how much of a fighter Vassell is , who Im sure will be trying his best in training to get injured again

More concerned with his injury record. A player who chips in with a few goals and assists is better than a player who can not play at all.
To be fair, he would bring something different to the team. He's pretty quick with the ball at his feet. But we need players who are going to make an impact. The last thing we need is another jazz or vassel who will spend more time out injured, than actually playing.

Not a big fan of JW to be honest. Spends a lot of time on his arse trying to win free kicks when anyone touches him! (Wilson is bad enough for this - a fault with the modern game imho). Also he is poor at tracking back and challenging - bit lightweight.
But he is cheap, and I think he has been brought in as an option off the bench. He can sonetimes create something and isnt bad with the ball at his feat.
Nearly fell off my chair when he actually scored for Wales recently. Anyway he will soon be a bluebird so good luck to thw lad.
