‘ LEE TOMLIN ‘

Fri Jan 29, 2021 5:42 pm

Cardiff City boss Mick McCarthy says he's hoping to have Lee Tomlin back in his squad in time to face Preston North End next month.

Tomlin hasn't played for the Bluebirds since coming off the bench in the 3-2 defeat at the hands of QPR at the end of October, having struggled with a groin injury.

The playmaker has since been under the knife to help rectify the problem, and now appears to be closing in on a much needed return for the Bluebirds.

And, speaking ahead of his side's clash with Millwall on Saturday, McCarthy laid out a timeline for when we can expect to see the midfelder back in action.

MICK McCARTHY:

"I had a good conversation with him today," he said. "He’s looking at February 20th. He’s going to have two weeks training with the under-23s, which is the plan I’ve put in place for with the physio and the doc, to get two games under his belt and then start training with us on the 15th, I think it is. The week of the 15th, before playing for the under-23s on the 16th, with a view to playing for us on the 20th.

"I know that when he was here last time he got ten goals and ten assists. If he can get himself into that shape and that fitness and that quality - he has that bit of magic dust that can win you a game. Finding that pass. That angle. He’s always had that. Of course, aligned with that, he’s always had to work hard with his fitness and he’s going to have to do that now."

Tomlin's potential return will come as a timely boost for the Bluebirds, who have arguably lacked the level of creativity in the final third that last season pushed City into the play-offs.

However, McCarthy has stressed that Tomlin's return will need to be carefully managed.

"It has to be done in an objective manner, a reasonable manner," he added.

"It has to be done in an objective way. A reasonable manner that’s a plan. Not just come back and train with us and get injured again. He’s been out for three months. So he has to be structured. He’s happy with it and I’m sure we’ll get the best out of him when he comes back."

He has been a huge loss this season. The only proper footballer we have that can create something out of nothing. The sooner he is back the better.

Like him myself and think he'll be a good addition once he comes back; but then I don't go around knocking players for having injuries performing for paying supporters. Just part and parcel of the game, I'm afraid ;)

But as you raised the subject, I was thinking you could take his place and sit on the physio's bench for a tenth of his wage...

Probably get free food, beverages and other free perks whilst there, too = result for you! :D  :ayatollah:

Why didn't Warnock pick him? We needed him in the premiership and he might have made a difference.

He's cracking a player on his day but I wouldn't hang my hat on him cause he unreliable and comes with baggage.

Also, very convenient to play the mental health card when you are after a new chapter and contract with club/fans.

So everyone with a mental health issue is ‘playing the card’?
Did he play the card when he played with an obvious injury (that now has required surgery)at the end of last season?
Everyone’s entitled to an opinion mate but my opinion is that he’s under contract til the end of next season and providing this injury (god forbid) isn’t career threatening, he’s the best attacking midfielder we have in the squad at the moment and he’ll make a huge difference to our fortunes this year (even thought it’ll probably be too late for play offs).

Season and a bit to go on his contract then ? I agree, best attacking player at the club .

Its just a shame that in all these years with us he only showed up in one season .

Don't see why that poor stat should be applauded ; and it says more about how modern day football fans forgive and forget so quickly when it suits. But yes, it was a good seaon off him!!!!

He won't pull the wool over big Mick though. 100% percenters in his team or fu.. do one. Probably why Warnock gave up on him as well.

Get shot of him and free up 20,000 a week.

he is under contract so there is no get shot and save £ x amount in the equation...just hope that after the recovery from the op he gets his fitness up to speed and we get last seasons LT back...personally im looking at it being a bonus if he does rather than what i expect...

Most of the reason he didn't "show" I the first season was he wasn't picked by Warnock on the dubious grounds he wasn't fir or didn't try hard enough in training. When Warnock was replaced by Harris and he started picking him he was by far the best midfielder and probably our best player. We have massively missed him this season.

I am in favour of McCarthy but do wonder if picking teams on the basis of who looks good in training and will run through a brick wall is the right idea.

.dubious grounds ? no mate when he turned up genuinely fit { not just holding his tummy in like the previous year } and had lost 2 stone last season Warnock was picking him ,why wouldnt you pick someone with all that talent. ? lets try over weight and unfit and its a problem he has had everywhere.....the weight and lack of fitness was not dubious it was visible. here ,but also at Forest and at Peterborough on loan .. i really hope when/if he comes back its the LT of the end of last season but im not holding my breathe..

Some of them are under contract mate do not as easy as that. Hypothetically speaking though, if their contracts were all up I tend to agree.
If Tomkins fitness could be guaranteed I’d keep him for another year but again that’s hypothetically speaking.
