MICK McCARTHY:

Injury latest

Joe Bennett’s fine. He’s okay. He’s fit.

Junior Hoilett’s not available. He just tightened up during the game. He’ll be fine. Not tomorrow. Wednesday to Saturday is just too quick a turnaround.

Mick McCarthy

Tomlin latest

I had a good conversation with him today. He’s looking at February 20th. He’s going to have two weeks training with the under-23s, which is the plan I’ve put in place for with the physio and the doc, to get two games under his belt and then start training with us on the 15th, I think it is. The week of the 15th, before playing for the under-23s on the 16th, with a view to playing for us on the 20th.

Osei-Tutu latest

Not from me. He’s back at Arsenal having treatment as far as I’m concerned. The last I heard, it was going to be a considerable time. Maybe five or six weeks someone said to me.

New manager Mick McCarthy has agreed their will be a minimum two Academy players in Cardiff's match day squads.

Bagan, Sang and Davies were included in the team away at Barnsley with Bagan starting the match.

And now McCarthy has re-called Brown from Livingston who is available for the Bluebirds from Monday 1st February and James Waite has been called back from Weston Supermare.

Mick McCarthy like Harris has been told their is no money for transfers and they must utilise what is already here, or send players out before bringing new ones in.

Greg Cunningham this week left the club for Preston, helping bring down the wage bill.

Tomlin's qualities

I know that when he was here last time he got ten goals and ten assists. If he can get himself into that shape and that fitness and that quality - he has that bit of magic dust that can win you a game. Finding that pass. That angle. He’s always had that. Of course, aligned with that, he’s always had to work hard with his fitness and he’s going to have to do that now.

Ciaron Brown

I’m told his contract is up and we have an option on him. I’ve had good reports from one of my chief scouts up in Scotland. First thing he said to me was that we had a lad up here that we needed to bring back. He’s doing really well. It’s only fair to him for us to assess him within the squad.

Reflections on the Barnsley game

You’re always learning something. No experience is wasted.

I guess when you’ve lost seven on the bounce. People question the desire and fight. That was evident against Barnsley. I’ve rarely been in a game as hard fought and ffeiourcis as that. Wasn’t one for the purists I have to be honest. It just showed to me that there’s plenty of fight in these lads. If you don’t stand up to that kind of assault on Wednesday, I admire Barnsley for the way they went about it, and they worked their socks off. To get a draw is a very good point.

McCarthy on the importance of stopping the rot

It was essential. There weren't that many chances in the game and they all came from restarts but to fight the way the lads did. They deserve a bit of credit. They’ve not had a lot recently.

Wilson latest

I’m not sure I said I wanted more from him in training. He’s done very well. He’s trained this morning with the lads. I’ve been really pleased with his response. I can see his quality as with Josh Murphy. They have to get into the team. No one’s got a gilt-edged right to play.

There’s expectations on every player when you sign a contract with Cardiff City. When you come on loan, it’s almost like ‘they’re from LIverpool and they have to play’. I don’t know what he’s done prior to that. I picked the team on two days of training.

I fully understand and I know all of Harry’s qualities.

On the Millwall game

Millwall is a club still very close to my heart. I am still very much in the vicinity of Millwall support. I have loads of pals that still support them. If I’m not playing against them I want them to do well, but if I am playing against them, I obviously want to win. They;’re not getting beat on a regular basis, so they’re a tough nut to crack.

McCarthy on his transfer plans

I’m working with the recruitment lads on the players they were looking before I came in. Some of them are just non-starters because we’ve got the players that we’ve got. We’ve got 20 players in line for tomorrow, plus there’s the players that we spoke about in Junior Hoilett and Max Watters, Tommo, all to come back. So we’ve got a good squad of players.

The only position that we’ve not got much strength in depth is at right-back, because we’ve just got Perry. We don’t have too much cover there.

But Perry’s [Ng] been great. I’m delighted with him. I think he’s a good signing.

I’ve enjoyed some of them. Others have been a complete waste of time. I’ll probably be in bed long before this one!

It does get quite exciting when you get involved, chatting to people when deals are getting done.

McCarthy on playing without fans on his first home Cardiff game

I’ve said in my programme notes that I’m delighted to be here. I’ve always admired the club, but I didn’t realise how big a club it is. Whenever I’ve come down, it’s always been a great atmosphere.

How's your first week gone?

It’s gone very well. I said to some of my pals how it’s gone at Wednesday night at 10pm. 8pm it wasn’t going very well. At 10 it was much better. Training I've really enjoyed, being back in it. It’s such a professional club. Everything about it, I’ve been very, very pleased. I’ll be delighted to stay on, but only results will help with that.

McCarthy is asked if he's expecting blood and thunder this weekend

They have been one of the tougher teams. All the stats get trotted out that they’ve won one in 10, they’ve drawn eight of them. That shows they’re still a tough nut to crack. I hope it is a blood and thunder game because they’re more enjoyable and more entertaining.

MICK McCARTHY:

More on Harry Wilson

Everyone’s the same. It makes it sound like I’m isolating Harry and I’m not.

Is it down to the player or manager to get the best out of a talent like that.

It’s a bit of both. I’m here until May 8. Harry is a good player. Is it my job how to teach them how to play well at football or play well in a team. I’d say it’s the latter. I’m certainly not teaching Harry how to play football. I’ve seen him play in this league.

Right-back situation and Bacuna

I don’t see him as a right-back that’s for sure. Sometimes players have to fill in and do it. He’s more of a creative midfielder to me. When you haven’t got as many options you have to try something. I guess that’s what Neil did.

I don’t know what we’ve got in the 23s. They trained with the residual squad that didn’t play on Wednesday and I was impressed with how they trained. Some of the lads were impressive. I have to find out if we have a right-back in that squad to see if they can step in. We’ll see. I’m sincerely hoping we don’t get an injury to Perry Ng. I don’t want to be moving players round and playing them out of position.

Probably not. No. I’ll support it. I think there really should be the forfeit of a donation so you can get out of it! I wouldn’t have minded if it was a beard. I might have gone for the beard. But the patch? I’m not so sure about that.

Re: BREAKING MICK McCARTHY:

Fri Jan 29, 2021 5:41 pm

Cardiff City boss Mick McCarthy says he's hoping to have Lee Tomlin back in his squad in time to face Preston North End next month.

Tomlin hasn't played for the Bluebirds since coming off the bench in the 3-2 defeat at the hands of QPR at the end of October, having struggled with a groin injury.

The playmaker has since been under the knife to help rectify the problem, and now appears to be closing in on a much needed return for the Bluebirds.

And, speaking ahead of his side's clash with Millwall on Saturday, McCarthy laid out a timeline for when we can expect to see the midfelder back in action.

MICK McCARTHY:

"I had a good conversation with him today," he said. "He’s looking at February 20th.

"I know that when he was here last time he got ten goals and ten assists. If he can get himself into that shape and that fitness and that quality - he has that bit of magic dust that can win you a game. Finding that pass. That angle. He’s always had that. Of course, aligned with that, he’s always had to work hard with his fitness and he’s going to have to do that now."

Tomlin's potential return will come as a timely boost for the Bluebirds, who have arguably lacked the level of creativity in the final third that last season pushed City into the play-offs.

However, McCarthy has stressed that Tomlin's return will need to be carefully managed.

"It has to be done in an objective manner, a reasonable manner," he added.

"It has to be done in an objective way. A reasonable manner that’s a plan. Not just come back and train with us and get injured again. He’s been out for three months. So he has to be structured. He’s happy with it and I’m sure we’ll get the best out of him when he comes back."

in fairness we only had 1 right back , so when he got injured someone had to fill in .. we are in the same spot now...
