Sean Morrison started the game on the bench owing to a back complaint and McCarthy thought Flint had trained more freely than the skipper in recent days, which is why he got the nod.
Joe Bennett had a bit of a groin strain, but it doesn't seem too serious.
Max Watters endured a little impingement on his Achilles during the week and it is as yet unsure as to how long he will be out.
Greg Cunningham, of course, was left out because he is going to Preston on loan until the end of the season.
