Wed Jan 27, 2021 1:27 pm

UPDATED:

Greg Cunningham has joined @pnefc on loan for the remainder of the 2020/21 season.
Cunningham’s contract runs out then .

UPDATED:

New Cardiff City boss Mick McCarthy says defender Greg Cunningham is returning to his former club Preston.

Cunningham has played just six times for the Bluebirds this term.

A replacement is expected before the Millwall home game.

Greg Cunningham, will be going out on loan this week until the end of the season, Cunningham will be in the match day squad tonight for City.

There will be no intentions to have him played unless something major happens / will travel up.

Apparently City will still pay half of his wages.

Apparently his contract runs out this season and it wont be renewed (approx £18,000 a week).
Wages were high Premier league contract

Also two Academy players will be in tonights squad and every game to the end of the season.

Apparently Big Mick has agreed that some of our youngsters will be able to get a chance to be in City's match day squads :bluebird: :bluebird:

Looks like it'll be a back 4 of Ng, Morrison, Nelson and Bennett / Bagan then?

Hopefully Mick can turn around our defence problems

A real shame, he should have been given a chance, but injuries and falling behind the pecking order he couldn't get in the side, that will be the last we see of him now.

Might change his mind if Bennett has a mare tonight.

A reasonable estimate i would say. He was signed in the preseason of our Premier League, was highly rated by Warnock and others and one of Prestons star players. He was expected to be a regular in the team. Wouldn't have been on much less than that.

Cunningham is on just short of £20k per week basic. We paid £3.5m for him in 2018. How many games did he play for us? Got to go down as one of the worst signings.

Yes he was, several of the squad are on high wages. The ones coming to the end of their contracts should be on far less wages, if they re-sign? If they don’t like it then let them go. :ayatollah:

Cunningham travelled with the 22 man squad, but will now be leaving City as planned. :bluebird:

So no more City matches for Cunningham.

Cunningham reminds me a lot of John Brayford. Arguably the best full back in the league at his previous club that got him the move to a promoted club in the PL (us). Then it just didn’t work out. Will probably do well again at PNE

Greg Cunningham explains Preston move

Greg Cunningham has admitted his Cardiff City career did not "pan out the way he hoped" after signing for Preston on loan until the end of the season.

The Republic of Ireland international has, to all intents and purposes, played his final game for the Bluebirds, with his loan at Deepdale taking him up to the expiration of his City contract.

Cunningham joined the Bluebirds from Preston for £4m before the 2018/19 Premier League season, but failed to really make his mark in the Welsh capital.

In fact, owing to a string of injuries, a loan spell away and being stuck behind Joe Bennett, the left-back made only 14 appearances in a Cardiff shirt in two-and-a-half years.

His time with Cardiff has clearly been a disappointment, and he has said as much, but is now looking forward to the challenge ahead back with his former club.

"I really enjoyed my time here and I don't think anyone can begrudge me for leaving at the time I did with the opportunity of playing in the Premier League," he said.

"It obviously didn't pan out the way I hoped but that is football sometimes.

"I'm delighted to come round full circle and I'm really happy to be here. Credit to the club and I really appreciate everyone who was associated with bringing me back."

Funny, but I was thinking the same thing to. No, seriously, it’s not funny at all, it’s poor judgment, and even worse, poor management for this scenario to be repeated time and time again.

Rick, Cunningham was costing us £18,000 a week basic and we are still paying £9,000 a week till the end of June when his contract expires, another disaster.

The so called Committee have not sorted our finances out properly in my opinion in their 5yrs of over seeing everything and in 11yrs our finances are a total disaster, no one else can be blamed.
