Max Watters explains why he chose Cardiff City, his Leeds United pride and what he'll bring to Bluebirds

Cardiff City sealed the signing of Crawley Town striker Max Watters on Saturday after he was heavily linked with rivals Swansea City

Cardiff City Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of forward Max Watters.

£200,000 with add ons of up to £500,000.

The 21-year-old joins from Crawley Town and has signed a contract with the Bluebirds until the summer of 2024.

Max Watters says it was the size of Cardiff City that lured him to sign for the Bluebirds.

City sealed the signature of Crawley Town striker Watters on Saturday, with the youngster signing on the dotted line ahead of the clash with Norwich City.

He had been heavily trailed by Cardiff's rivals Swansea City in recent weeks, with reports elsewhere stating that the Swans had had a bid turned down for the 21-year-old.

It is understood Swansea were unwilling to meet Crawley's valuation of the player, believed to be in the region of seven figures. Steve Cooper's side, currently second in the Championship standings, have since turned their attentions elsewhere.

And Watters explained why he chose the Bluebirds over other suitors.

MAX WATTERS:

"When I first found out about Cardiff I was immediately attracted to it, with the manager and size of the club," he told Cardiff City TV.

"Wales is a lovely place to live, so it came down to that, really."

Watters arrives in the Welsh capital with a promising reputation, with his former manager John Yems likening him to Ian Wright at an early age and Crawley's director Erdem Konyar labelling him the "most valuable player in England".

He showcased what he could do in a bright cameo against Leeds United in the FA Cup earlier this month, a game which the League Two side won 3-0. Watters has pride in that result but is already moving on to the job in hand with Cardiff.

He thanked those at Crawley for their help in his progression but it is clear he has big ambitions for his career in Wales.

"Crawley was a massive learning (curve) for me, I learnt a lot from the manager and Lee Bradbury as well, but it was just a stepping stone to get where I want to be, and this is where I want to be," he said.

"I think the FA Cup game was a huge game, beating Leeds, but I've got to put that behind me now and concentrate on Cardiff."

He joins a club struggling at the wrong end of the Championship table, though.

Defeat to the Canaries on Saturday left Neil Harris' men in 15th place, having lost six of the last seven matches in all competitions.

Harris will hope Watters can add a more cutting threat to his side, with QPR up next on Wednesday night. Asked what he can offer the Bluebirds, Watters was very matter of fact in his reply.

"I'm a lively striker, I like to make runs in behind," he said.

"I like to link up well with whoever else I'm playing with, make it easy for the centre midfielders to get the ball in behind and give them options.

"Really, as a striker, you've got to score goals, and that's what I'm here to do."

Watters' move to Cardiff appeared pretty whirlwind from those on the outside of Cardiff City Stadium, with news only emerging of the Bluebirds' interest on Friday.

The striker says he's had a few conversations with his new manager and revealed the message he has given him ahead of his debut.

He said: "I've had a few conversations with him, I met up with him yesterday (Friday) and he said 'look, there's no pressure, just come in, do what you've been doing, hopefully get some goals with us and push on from there'.

"(It's a) big game at home against QPR, huge team. It's a shame the fans can't be here so I can play in front of them but hopefully I'm involved and hopefully we can get the win."

He has had a seriously odd career. He started off playing for some pretty ropey non league clubs Barking Thurrock Ashford etc where he did not score many goals. Given the lack of goals at this level it was not obvious why Doncaster took him on they must have seen something about him and decided to take him on but he failed to score for them in five games so they released him. He surfaces at Maidstone where he is on trial and plays 45 minutes against Crawley without scoring and Crawley pinch him from Maidstone.

He then turns into a complete goal machine and starts being compared with Ian Wright. I can't recall such a quick turnaround in a players fortunes. Four indifferent seasons with mainly non league clubs in regional leagues to the most sought after striker in the lowers divisions. If this path continues he will be playing for Real Madrid in the champions league in a couple of seasons.
