Craig Bellamy on promotion / Malky was Top Class

"I loved Malky, he was adored at the club and since they have pretty much airbrushed him from history."

"People who talk negatively about Malky, I can’t have it."

Thursday 7th January 2021

CRAIG BELLAMY:

"When I came back to Cardiff, at the time, I was going through a divorce, and anyone that’s been through a divorce will know how difficult it is. It’s a nightmare. I had a young daughter who I wanted to see more of, but in footballing terms, it was more about the chance to be involved in something. It was not all about me coming here, it was about being part of a squad that are going to be able to push for something this club has never achieved before. That was the motivation for me.

Malky was top class. He said that there was no pressure on me and that we wouldn’t get promoted because of me, but I would play my part. Speak to the players and let them see what you do as a professional because these boys work hard. They don’t have all the ability, but they train every day with intensity and every day was tough. I knew having played against them with Liverpool that this was not a team that you want to play against."

How did you feel about the rebrand?

"The majority were in favour, initially at least, driven by a desperation to play in the Premier League, but it nearly killed the club.

I sort of switched off to it. You play in loads of different kits, so I sort of treated it like that. It’s just a kit, don’t get emotional about it or look too much in to it. The way I looked about it is that the city and the community were going to get the chance to be on top, but I completely understood where there fans were coming from on it. Your colours are your colours, remember I was not a Cardiff fan, so it never hurt me like it would of the hardcore City fans."

"It’s tribal how you feel about your team, but at the same time, if Vincent Tan doesn’t get what he wants and pulls out.I always believed we would go back to blue and that’s the truth, but for this period, lets just do what we’ve got to do. As players, you just get on with it. It’s for fans to dictate what happens to their club. The rest of us represent the club, but we’ll be gone. Your supporters will always be there and they will get their way in the end."

Cardiff ripped through that season, led from the front and won the title quite comfortably. What was different from your first spell? Presumably, everything!

Everything. The attitude and the mentality. I remember that when Cardiff usually dipped, we lost at Peterborough, who were fighting for survival, and I said to Malky; ‘let me take the team talk today.’ I think we were playing Blackburn the next day. I just said; ‘don’t worry about what happened, it’s gone.’

‘Teams will win and lose, but the group of players we have, it’s not like previous seasons. This is completely different. We’ve seen everyone in this league and we will get promoted, but you have to keep training hard. Blackburn will take care of itself. We will get enough points, but we have to keep believing.’ I felt it and we beat Blackburn 3-0. We run over them.

We had one or two players that were falling off and they had to be dropped. If you look at Whitts, he didn’t play much towards the end of the season. I was close to Whitts, we lived next door to each other and we shared rooms, God rest his soul. Maybe the hangover from previous seasons was starting to affect him.

We loved him him and he was probably one of Cardiff’s best ever players, but we maybe needed Aron Gunnarsson, someone who runs hard and is not affected by what has happened before. We played one game at a time and we won some games playing awful. I remember we went up to play Neil Warnock’s Leeds, and we didn’t play pretty football by the way! We won 1-0, but we were both just leathering it!

The irony. That was our future!

I remember me and Whitts on the coach after the game saying ‘that’s not football!’ Three points though. On to the next one. That was our mentality and Malky was brilliant at that. One game at a time and don’t look too far ahead. If we only get a point, it’s a great point.

How did you find working with Malky?

"He was adored at the time, but has been pretty much airbrushed from history"

"I loved him. His attention to detail, for opponents and post-match, was very good. He had a certain way of playing and that was what he knew. It wasn’t great for the likes of myself, but I was just another player. I still had to track and we were beyond dangerous at set-pieces. We got promoted off set-pieces if you think about it. What I liked about him was his dressing downs. If you did something wrong, he saw it and he would tell you. Even myself. Some people probably thought I was off limits, but I wasn’t."

I remember I came back from the Olympics, my calf had popped and I just felt tired. I said to him that I didn’t think I had a gruelling season in me and he told me to take two weeks off. Go away and come back fresh. I was back in 10 days, but he could see what you needed. Even if he had a go at me, he would pull me in the next day and tell me why he had to.

I like that because if you don’t, I’ll know you’ve let me off and that’s doing me no favours. The players needed to see it as well. If he has a go at me, he can then have a go at them. I’ve got no problem with that and I enjoy it. He was good at man management.

If you look at his time in Cardiff, he got to a League Cup final and the play-offs, with a team that started off with about six or seven players and a transfer embargo. Then the next year he won the league. In two and a half years, it was ridiculous what he did. Incredible. A lot what went on afterwards and I don’t really know about.

There was a clear falling out, but I just wish they could have found a solution. People who talk negatively about Malky, I can’t have it."

Re: MALKY MACKAY WAS TOP CLASS SAYS CRAIG BELLAMY

Thu Jan 07, 2021 9:28 am

Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay has been told by owner Vincent Tan to resign or he will be sacked.

In a letter emailed to Mackay on Monday, it is understood Tan listed in depth his grievances with the Scot.

BBC Sport

"The tension between Malky Mackay and Vincent Tan has been simmering for some time. This week it boiled over and there will only be one outcome.

"Mackay's two-and-a-half-year reign as Cardiff manager is drawing to a close - it's not a matter of if but when.

"The man who guided Cardiff to the Premier League will not see out their maiden season in that competition.

"Other staff are known to be keen on following Mackay through the exit door, and more still if Tan takes personal control over the recruitment of his successor.

"The Malaysian businessman is scheduled to arrive in the UK on Friday night ahead of Cardiff's trip to Liverpool the next day.

"If Tan follows his words with actions, it is likely to be Mackay's final game as manager."

Tan criticised 41-year-old Mackay at length in a range of areas, such as signings, transfer budgets, results on the pitch and style of play.

The Malaysian businessman also questioned the former Watford manager's record as a boss.

Mackay has previously said he will not resign.

A Cardiff spokesman told BBC Sport: "The club is not party to any letter sent from one person to another."

The correspondence came on the same day the Malaysian businessman issued a statement through Cardiff chief executive Simon Lim criticising Mackay.

Tan said he was "extremely upset" after Mackay revealed he was hoping to recruit three new players in the January transfer window.

You’re right!
I know this for a fact and it’s unfortunate as Bellamy would be my realistic number one choice to come in as manager.

Paul,

It’s the truth as you say.

Good managers will no longer come here under this regime, their track record has got worse.

That was my opinion at the time and it still is now.
From memory I don’t think we were actually even in the bottom 3 at the time.

Paul we never were and results were good until Tan was on back 24/7.

Malky after he left City was haunted by Tan until he ruined him in football.

I believe Malky could of stayed on for years.

He is spot on about Malky, I honestly believe we would have stayed up if he hadn't have left.

I've got a lot of time for Craig Bellamy, because he's always honest and doesn't mince his words.

I do think he slightly misunderstands the reaction to the rebrand though. But, by his own admission, he was never a Cardiff City supporter.

Malky did a superb job as our Manager, we went up as Champions and he also took us to a League Cup Final, and I also believe he would have kept us up! I rate him far better than Warnock but why was he stupid enough to fall out with his Boss! No one can do that and expect to retain their job! And how has he not been successful in Management since like his old assistant Dyche? There’s a man who would be a perfect fit for us although apparently he is one of the highest paid in the Premier League! Malky however was a disaster at Wigan and a Scottish club and I believe he’s now in an administration job in Scotland?
Great pity as he could have been a legend at our club and our greatest ever Manager!

I have spoken to many people with in the club incl Bellamy who had spoken out.
Malky was loved by everyone and adored.

Malky was hounded by Tan and Tan destroyed him as a manager.

Malky was being told in the last months who to play etc and he refused and certainly was no yes man.

If Tan went , I would have Malky back tomorrow.

I put Malky on fb and I have had more likes and fantastic comments regarding Malky since Eddie May.

Great days following the City Home and Away under Malky. I never missed a game home or away with him as manager. Im quite proud of that. The football was never always pretty but so many teams went back over the bridge with zero points. Met him 3 times and he was an absolute gent :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

That’s absolutely nonsense .

First Malky showed the first season with little money League Cup Final and play offs.

Derby managers have had £millions upon £millions abd every season fail.
Leicester City took 3 years of giving £millions upon £millions before they got promoted.

Clubs like Forest and Sheff We’d etc over recent years when they had money failed.

It’s not just about money, the manager has to put together a team that jells and work together and play for him and the club abd just read what Bells says about him.

As to staying I don’t know and you don’t know if Malky would of kept us up on that one it’s all guess work. But I strongly feel if Tan had left him alone, Malky would if comfortable kept us up. We were neve in the bottom 3 under Malky.

Agree Annis, especially if he had been given the funds Oli received in the January, after all he new his squad and what was needed far better than Oli. I remember being in London when Oli was unvieled and my heart sank, realising then we were doomed, and thinking stupid spiteful Tan!

When you say everyone at the club adored him Annis, do you mean the backroom staff or the fans. Because there's been some horror stories come out about him.

And when he went to Wigan, he failed miserably.

Sometimes it's just a case of a right fit with the right club and I think that was what happened with us. Would I want him back... No, we need to move forward as a club and if he returned, and it didn't work out that is what we would remember him as. Rather than what he achieved with us

I mean with in the club.

The back room staff from the cleaners , to the laundry lady, to the office staff , to the grounds man etc etc

As to Wigan, Tan was hounding Malky abd efen the owners there, I don’t think you realise how bad Tan Hounded Malky it was unreal.

Well at the moment we as a club are def not moving forward on all departments sadly.

Look you can try and twist things. the point is Malky was a great success at ours and when a straight talker player like Bells tells you the truth surely that says a lot.

He was only at Wigan 5 minutes and working under extraordinary conditions, that said returning to a club seldom works out. So I’d recommend Jim Goodwin (who’s returned to manage St Mirren) he knows how to set a team up.

Malky was fantastic for us and I think it’s shocking how Tan ruined his management career. He was lined up for the Palace job and Tans vindictiveness put an end to that.
Appreciate what Tan has done in saving the club from bankruptcy and keeping the club going, but at the end of the day, he’s a c**t of a man and a total control freak.

Hes was backed in the championship and got us promoted as champions. Job very well done. Every year clubs are backed in the championship and fail. Its not an easy league to get out of and throwing money at it doesnt always work.

Regarding keeping us up we will never know, but we weren't in the bottom 3 all season under him as we consistently picked up points to stay out of there. Tan ruined him because the fans chose malky over Tan.

Just like Tan mellowed and agreed the change back to playing in blue, why don’t we fans campaign through all forms of media to ask Tan to forgive and forget Malky’s indiscretion and reinstate Malky (who also would have to make some conciliatory comments in return)?

Tan has never recovered from that although he got lucky with Warnock.

We are now at a place that aligns to Tans ability as owner. We will mellow around this spot for the next few seasons. Watch even the die hard Tan lovers start to question him.
